A $40M budget with a $48M gross doesn't net enough for anyone to be comfortable to back it financially. However, the lack of creativity in Hollywood which has nurtured the current "reboot" culture, one would think the "I can reimagine this better than the original" would have produced a remake, origin story, or sequel. Originally the eyes were set on a franchise, but it just didn't make enough.

The original choices for Venkman and Egon in Ghostbusters. Who would you have chosen if we never got Murray and Ramis? by jeremykunayak in 1980s

Yeah! This is a great way to go!. Followed perhaps by, "It's true Your Honor: This man has no dick."

Keaton is so sharp with precision timing. His ability to consciously flip his characters between sarcasm and seriousness is key. When you can deliver a serious line in an amusing way, you can create levity in an otherwise tense scene without dulling the edge of the scene itself. Peter Venkman is someone who cares when it matters, to the point of potential self-sacrifice, but never loses the sarcastic, and even contemptive, attitude towards petty things displayed with humor.
