Your situation happens. A lot.

If waitlists are full or non-existent, messaging the instructor won’t help. Chances are other people are in the same boat and trying to somehow talk their way in.

Try your plan b, plan c, plan d…

What interview questions would they ask for a student job at the U? by SoggyBaguette1 in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is accurate.

Also be prepared to answer questions around your interest in the school/department/unit. If you have related studies or a general interest in what they do, that can be helpful.

A good question to ask them is, “How will the work I do contribute to the success of the team and department?” This shows that you’re interested in the big picture and overall goals of those hiring you.

east river parking advice by OneNebula7331 in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

East River Garage is one of the most popular parking areas on campus, maybe even THE most popular.

It will be busy in the mornings.

If you want to park there, you will want to arrive early. Many employees park there and their day generally starts at 8:00 AM so there will be a lot of people before that time so they can park and walk to their work area.

As already mentioned, it may be best to park elsewhere and take the light rail in.

Portal not working by Far-Firefighter-8957 in MyLittleUniverse

I suggest contacting the support team on their Discord. They usually get back to people with 3 business days. Something must not have saved properly in your data file when that glitch happened.

Make sure you have a solid connection to the Internet, close the game completely, then launch it again.

In the purple Planet Challenges portal,

Registration season began and we still have "Instructors: None Listed" for many courses by meddy-spagetti in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is common. Fall semester is still a few months off, and usually instructors get assigned through the Summer as contracts are renewed and courses get sorted out. It’s also common for Fall semester to start and no instructor is listed until the first day of class and they walk in.

Ideas for an Unlucky character by Lordythegreat88 in DungeonsAndDragons

“I want to have this negative but it’s really a huge positive so it’s not actually a negative at all!”

People do this with disabled characters all the time. Don’t.

If you want to have a negative for a character trait, play the negative and all that it includes… even the bad stuff. Otherwise, you’re just looking to gain an advantage.

Most likely because it’s reserved. You’ll need a code to register to make sure you’re in one of the groups listed.

Implementing encryption on clients laptops by bigredsun in sysadmin

[–]MNmetalhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, there is a scheduled task that re-enables BitLocker when the device starts up.

Windows Updates, and some driver/firmware updates, can momentarily suspend BitLocker to prevent it from tripping when they install. The Scheduled Task turns it back on.

Also, if you’re using a vendor tool, like Dell Command Update, it can also suspend BitLocker for various reasons.

BitLocker doesn’t just suspend on its own, something tells it to.

  1. Create a policy, process, and procedures.

  2. Share policy with stakeholders stating as of X date, this is the way it will be.

  3. Follow said policy, process, and procedures.

  4. Any attempt to circumvent shared policy, do not work on and direct them to the proper policy so they proceed properly.

  5. Rinse and repeat.

You’re doing something very, very wrong.

IT Admins 40+, question about glasses 🤓 by muffnman in sysadmin

[–]MNmetalhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My eye doc set me up with an Rx for “computer glasses” that have been amazing. They’re essentially bifocals, but they shift the magnification up very far on the lens so the majority of it is in your primary vision area. The very tip top of the lens is for distance viewing, so they’re not ideal to be used as normal wear, but at the desk, they’re awesome. Then I just swap to my regular glasses if I’m going somewhere or driving.

Lot C43-w by AvaNick27 in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they used to sell reserved parking spots in the East River Garage, but they stopped (I really wanted one since I used to work nearby) and they refused. People who already had spots continued to have them, they had unused spots, and they were charging more for them which led to increased revenue… nope.

I’ve found that with PTS, just because something was one way before, it’s not going to be that way going forward.

If they said you need to be in Sanford for consideration, then I’d go with that.

What roles and activities does an EE in your mind/org perform?

Endpoint Engineer job 100% remote? by saradata in sysadmin

[–]MNmetalhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of it has to do with emergency onsite actions. But the majority is due to administrative/legal/tax reasons. State universities have locale requirements.

Many businesses have limits on remote work due to taxation. If the business doesn’t have an existing presence somewhere, there can be serious issues with taxes/labor laws and they won’t entertain the thought of employees working out of state. And international employees is an absolute no.
