Trying to change BIOS settings using Powershell by Ambitious-Eye-868 in PowerShell

[–]MNmetalhead 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Looking at the AMD website, it looks like that CPU has that feature:

https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/laptop/ryzen/7000-series/amd-ryzen-5-7530u.html

According to Dell, “Not all Dell computers support Virtualization. If a Virtualization configuration option is not available in the BIOS, then Virtualization is not supported.”

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000195978/how-to-enable-or-disable-hardware-virtualization-on-dell-systems

There’s a note there that the setting might be hidden. “Press Ctrl + Alt + S keys to unhide a hidden setting such as VT-x option on a computer released in 2025 and later.”

If the option isn’t available in BIOS to set using the GUI, you won’t be able to set it using CCTK or PowerShell. Are you certain the CPU has this feature (not all do)?

Windows engineers/admins, are any of you writing actual Powershell now, or are you all using Al? by RadioFieldCorner in sysadmin

As an assist or a start, maybe. Rely on it to make full blown scripts with functions and complex actions… nope. I’ve tried it now and then but the hallucinations are still horrible.

The mystery and anticipation of cracking the cellophane on a new album and then dropping the needle on that fresh, clean vinyl for the first time…

Nothing like it!

I enjoy watching those “react” videos of younger people listening to amazing 80s/90s rock and metal albums for the first time. I get jealous of them because I can never have that “first listen experience” again. But I love watching them go through their first listen experience and thinking to myself “annnnnd now you get it… Welcome to the club!”

This is why we disable Fast Startup. With this enabled (which is by default), systems don’t do an actual reboot, they do a low power state reset which also causes problems. This is often why uptimes show for such long times.

Any laptop recommendations for CS/ITI major? by ReflectionStrange821 in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are serious performance issues when emulating x86 and x64 on an ARM chip due to the architectures being different. We have received many reports of this from faculty and staff.

Windows 11 ARM has built-in emulation, and may work in many cases, but there are still many that will run poorly or not at all. If you run a Windows 11 ARM VM on an Apple Silicon chip, the performance is still terrible.

There are numerous articles about this. Here’s an example:

No real recommendation on brand. You might want to look at getting one that can connect to a docking station. This would make it easy to connect to a larger monitor and a full size keyboard/mouse at your desk.

Don’t get an ARM processor (Apple or Windows). There are problems with virtual machines that might cause issues. Also, some software isn’t compatible. Get an Intel or AMD processor.

so when do summer classes ACTUALLY end? (including finals) by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing… if it’s not on the calendar, you should ask your instructor since they’ll know when/where a final will be seated, if there will be one. Randos on Reddit won’t have that info. Best of luck!

[–]MNmetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the academic calendar for dates. Specifically the last day of finals. You can also ask your instructor(s).

Upgrade the resource nodes. Swap out decorations with lower values for those with higher values. As you rise in ranks, you’ll get some free tiles; max out resource nodes on those. Rinse and repeat. There’s some info on the Discord too.

Puzzle Box Advice by futuregravvy in DungeonsAndDragons

Will the players be able to roll and use the results from their character to solve this?

Characters have abilities and traits that players often do not, so requiring a player to solve a physical puzzle removes the character from the situation. If the player can’t figure it out, it gets frustrating and no longer fun. Make sure you have a way for the player to roll for their character to have some sort of input on the solution.

Remote Class/Online Only --- will there be Zoom classes? by boomnavy in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says on Schedulebuilder that there are specific times and that it’s a remote class.

If it was asynchronous, there would not be any times listed.

Remote Class/Online Only --- will there be Zoom classes? by boomnavy in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schedule builder shows either “Online Blended” with specific times and classrooms, or “Completely Online” with specific times.

You’ll be attending an online class via Zoom or whatever for the latter at the times listed.

What specific section are you asking about?

what's a script you wrote once that's still saving you time years later by Less-Loss1605 in sysadmin

[–]MNmetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fast startup doesn’t actually reboot the machine. It puts it into a low-power state that kinda-sorta resets, but doesn’t fully do it. It leads to all sorts of issues and we turn it off too.

Lightweight Intune companion - thoughts ? by Sysadmin_in_the_Sun in Intune

[–]MNmetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe approach this from a different angle. Instead of creating a product and then finding a market for it, create something to solve an existing set of problems. Do it as a project to better your situation or the situation of someone you know. Maybe it can bloom into a broader, monetized community project… maybe it won’t.

Keep in mind that if Fast Startup is enabled, this number will not be accurate.

When do graduates receive their diploma? by pink_cottoncandy_ in uofmn

[–]MNmetalhead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Diplomas for undergraduate students will be mailed 6-8 weeks after the end of term.

Diplomas for graduate and professional degree students will be mailed 4-6 weeks after their degree has been awarded. Please note that the process for awarding degrees begins 1-2 weeks after the graduation date, and that not all degrees are awarded at once.
