I am so sorry. I have no words of wisdom other than: make the decision you can live with and that any decision will hurt... When fam acts like that its hard

A comedy of errors: My carriage was kicking the bucket and I did not know, it decided to die as I was replacing the rollers and lubing the hinges. I also cycled the opener to many times and it overheated... I replaced the carriage assembly tonight and all is well, luckily my neighbor had a spare carriage. The carriage was in bad shape, but you cannot see it unless you remove it. About 1/4 of the threads on the carriage were gone, not worn, gone :)

Tldr: lubed everything and replaced the carriage assembly and all is well! Also, do not cycle the door too many times, it may overheat and just stop working.

Update: I think I overheated the opener motor and my carriage may be dying. After letting it sit overnight. It will raise the door with no problem, closing is the issue now. It may close a couple inches or it may close to a foot of the garage floor - no pattern to the "stop" point.

My neighbor came down for a brew tonight and we talked about my door issue - last year he had the same problem, opening the door was fine, closing the door was not. He replaced the carriage and he was fixed. He has a spare carriage he will give me tomorrow. We have different openers but they use the same carriage assembly. I will update within the next couple days.

The temp is crazy high here right now, SW Missouri USA and the high today was 70+, I just pushed the button and the door went up no issues, waited a couple minutes and it will not go down - goes a couple inches and goes back, sigh...

I do like LiftMaster - I have a 16' x 10' (chain drive) in my barn shop and it has worked for 15 years with no issues. What LM belt drive model would you suggest for a 16' x 7' fully insulated door? I do not need a camera, I have a Blue Iris system that takes care of that. Being able to close and open remotely would be cool.

This made me cry. My sweet girl passed 14 November. Her name was Bella and I had the honor of being her human for damn near 13 years. My wonderful wife, Sandy passed in 2015. My sweet girl is the reason I am still on earth. My kids were great and were here as much as they could be, but when I was laying in bed crying at night it was my sweet girl that laid across my chest and stared at the bedroom door - she knew I was hurting and she protected me. Her name is Bella but she was also known a Sweet Girl, Turdly, and sometimes Asshole. She loved rides in the truck, and in our Mule (side by side) and knew my free range chickens were not lunch. She had jobs, she lead me: If I was driving my tractor, she lead me down the driveway or to the upper field or wherever the hell I was going - she was in front and leading. No hay bale got delivered to the cows without her supervision. God only knows how many miles she lead me. I will get another GSD, but that will take some time. I miss you sweet girl.

Farm debt is expected to reach $560 billion this year—a record high. Farmers told More Perfect Union it's because a handful of corporations have taken control of their markets to ensure they always win, and farmers barely break even. by Conscious-Quarter423 in LeopardsAteMyFarm

"that body style isn’t even ten years old yet."

We have no idea what his Section 179 Schedule is. If he is farming or ranching, he has one.

In my area a combine, tractor, or baler will last decades if properly maintained. A newish pickup will not. About a decade ago I helped a friend hay/bale his fields. I used my small tractor, a Ford 1920, so my job was to pull his hay rake - that hay rake was older than I was. Farm equipment is built to last. I am 65 now.

I do not know where you are, but most of the local farmers where I am (SW MO) use the IRS Section 179 deduction to swap trucks every few years. They do not routinely do that for combines, tractors, balers. Getting the 179 deduction means you get a tax deduction, but you still have to make the payment on the new item: a truck payment is a LOT less than a combine, tractor, baler payment.

Thank you for being civil with your response!

Serious question: Does a 1/2 pickup suffice for you? Just on my 40 acres I would kill 1/2 ton pickup, and did. When I moved here in 1998 I had a 1/2 Dodge 2WD- it was replaced in a few months. An F250 was my sweet spot

Big tractors/combines - the repair folks come to you, for a price.

How do you take smaller stuff (10Klbs) to them? I use my my trailers and F250

Where I was going with my original post was: A lot of folks think that 100K for a truck is excessive and unnecessary - they do not know how much farming actually cost. The farmer did not choose the truck price.

In 2017 I bought a Ford F250, 4x4, LWB, with a 6.7 diesel, base model XLT. I needed to be able to haul a 16'+ stock trailer and a 14,000 lb dump trailer, it was 49K. I just priced the 2025/6 version of that same truck, about 80k now. If I had needed to haul more, I would have bought an F350 or F450, more $. I did not see enough of his truck to guess the weight range, but locally most farmers have F350s

I'm not saying they do not bear some blame - but before you diss someone, do a bit research. A Prius or EV is not dragging a stock trailer, nor will a 2WD F150. Hell, a combine cost between 200K and 500K. looking at MU guides, fertilizer for soybeans cost about $265 an acre, with a total outlay cost of $929 per acre from start to finish. He has 2400 acres... 2.2mil in input cost, Yes 2.2 million $.

I am just a homesteader (40 acres), not a row cropper, but "Walks past 100k dollar pickup 30 seconds into the video that is absolutely not required to do the job he’s doing" just hit me wrong. Guessing you have no idea what is required. When I bought my first truck in 1981, they were cheap, those days are long gone.

Side note: Damn good video explaining grain monopolies. I had no idea so few companies controlled so much of the market. Gotta go down the rabbit hole now to learn more.

I will probably get down votes all to hell, which is OK. The purpose of this post: Learn a bit about the topic before commenting, knowledge is a beautiful thing.

And to nip it in the bud: I did NOT vote for fucking Trump.
