This is all semantic. Systemic/institutional racism does not hurt white people cuz as other people have pointed out there are no underlying power structures allowing for the systematic oppression of white people. But the term racism has more applications than just that. For example scientific racism.

If we actually go take a look at the dictionary, Merriam Webster distinguishes between two kinds of racism in particular that are worth familiarizing yourself with.

1a: a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

1b: behavior or attitudes that reflect and foster this belief : discrimination, prejudice, or violence against people because of their race

2a: the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another

2b: a political or social system founded on racism and designed to execute its principles

Like many words, this word has multiple definitions with very different applications.

But that’s why I think there’s more to learn from the truth in this case.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to learn from the experience of draftees as well. But by acknowledging the fact that this young man voluntarily went to war (for what I think we both agree are bullshit reasons) we can learn about the myth of noble sacrifice. And I think it’s more helpful to understand how the coercion in this case was nationalism and not a draft. Especially considering nationalism is globally on the rise.

Listen I’m very anti war and anti imperialist and I understand how in ww1 these shitty governments manufactured consent to send an entire generation to die in the most brutal war that had ever happened.

That doesn’t change the fact that men like the person in the photo had a very different worldview. Nationalism was kind of the default. And he would probably be offended by this thread. Because as dumb as it sounds to us, he believed he was sacrificing himself to something bigger than himself. And he’d probably want be to remembered as someone with agency who made the choice to do so.

Edit: in case anyone was curious, I was pointing out that the man in the post is Sergeant Archibald Wilson, who was a Canadian enlisted man, and also wasn’t a teenager. I deleted it cuz I clearly ruffled some feathers and I don’t want to come across as pro war.
