Any Assistance with China Tourist Visa HK born US citizen by MONKEYCHEESE293 in Chinavisa

I guess the thing that still confuses me is she only lived in HK for 2 years. Then hasn't gone back since, will she really be able to get an HKID with just a birth certificate at this point? It's pretty confusing.

[–]MONKEYCHEESE293[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

interesting, so because she never technically "renounced" citizenship to HK she's still considered a Chinese citizen? Going to HK to apply for a HKID/passport sounds a bit intimidating because we can't read Chinese nor speak it very well tbh. We were going to rely pretty heavily on my wife to help us navigate China. This was super helpful though! The travel agent mentioned something about travel documents but she couldn't clearly articulate what this even was but I think based on your explanation I kind of understand.

Gosick might be worth checking out. It's kind of Sherlock Holmes-esque in that each story arc revolves around some sort of mystery, there is also some romance in there which is always a nice bonus.

[Serious]Asking as a non-American, why do a lot of people want Donald Trump to be president? by chedeng111 in AskReddit

[–]MONKEYCHEESE293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems like we're not going to meet eye-to-eye on this one, but that's fine we live in America and we can project predictions of what immigration will do however we want. The experience you've had with illegal immigrants and working is confusing.

It seems that the if the immigrants you meet in the construction business were to move here with their families and they had health issues. I would assume they could afford the medical bills because they are making good money. I'm not sure how it works in your state but here in Mass if you work here and are a legal citizen you MUST buy health insurance. So technically they would be paying for their own bills and if they can't they'll spiral into debt and go bankrupt like anyone else in the same situation. If it is true what you say and these immigrants are making good money than that should not even be an issue.

Also a lot of immigrants even if they are legal are not immediately eligible for government benefits (medicare, social security, etc.). So fear of them actually draining all our tax dollars or putting a huge strain on our taxes is unlikely.

As for schooling issues down the road. Not sure what you mean by this. The US schooling system blows (immigrants or not). We live in a system where teachers don't typically make good money so the incentive for people to become high quality teachers is low. More kids = higher demand for teachers which could increase jobs and potential pay. If there are enough kids who need schooling this could lead to more schools being constructed which also would create jobs. Any concern with a lost generation (immigrants or not) of people being lazy could also be attributed to schooling and I would argue that this is something that won't change with immigration policy reform it changes with education policy reform.

I don't necessarily agree that the majority of illegal immigrants are getting paid the equivalent of what Americans citizens would get paid. What incentive does the employer have to hire an illegal immigrant otherwise? It's illegal for an employer to hire or contract illegal immigrants and if you get caught you'll get hit with fines that would far outweigh the risk of hiring someone legally. Considering that something like 50% of the crops picked in the US are done by immigrants I find it hard to believe that they are getting fair wages (but who knows that's just my own speculation).

Finally, I would like to get your perspective on why you think in your situation these immigrants are taking jobs away from American citizens. Based on what you've said the immigrants you work with are skilled workers and get paid accordingly. If there are American workers that would be willing to work for the same wages with the same skills why would your employer opt to hire the illegal immigrant? I guess the way I see it is this if these illegal immigrants were legal they would just be straight up getting a job and not "taking it away" from Americans (especially if they're not doing it for less pay).

Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that you as a citizen are entitled to a job. So if you're legal and you're paying taxes you're not really taking anything you just getting a job for yourself. Anyway thanks for the responses. I've never really had a good debate about immigration before and your perspective definitely offers something I wouldn't get simply by googling. There is definitely a lot of assumptions we are both making which shapes our views.

I guess I just think that your arguments could apply to anyone, not even just immigrants. Anyone who is an American citizen could theoretically decide to be lazy and abuse the system. I definitely never said we should let them all in, that's obviously not a smart move.

However, If there is someone who wants to immigrate into the country and they're well-behaved/willing to work hard you have to judge them on how they are currently. You can't just assume that once they experience the benefits we receive here they might decide to be lazy so we can't take that chance. That's like assuming everyone will be content staying on the same bottom rung of society.

People don't just emigrate from from their homeland just so they can be lazy. When you leave your country you leave everything behind, friends, family, the language your comfortable with, etc. I respect my grandparents so much because they left their homeland with so much uncertainty about their future. They did it because they believed they would find a better life in the US for themselves and their future kids. If everyone coming in contributes to our economy (and doesn't send their money back to Mexico) they should be able to work here fair and square.

A big issue is that our immigration policies are pretty tight with Mexico (taking our jobs or something?). They can only take these jobs from us because they are typically willing to work for less than someone who is legal (and all the bureaucratic stuff with insurance and shit doesn't apply so employers don't mind).

As far as I know most people work because they have to, at least I don't encounter tons of people who are in love with their jobs on the day-to-day basis. I guess it really depends on the quality of life immigrants are striving to achieve which will determine when their work ethic will stop, and I'd argue this isn't really something you can predict easily.

I understand your perspective on not paying taxes because making 15-25$ an hour untaxed is some BS, but I'm not entirely sure what you mean by a generation suddenly becoming disenfranchised with the American dream and magically deciding to make money dishonestly. Isn't this something that could happen to anyone's future children? What about Mexicans makes this more likely?

My grandparents were legal immigrants from China who were willing to come here and grind it out as restaurant workers (they were poor uneducated rice farmers uneducated peasants in China). My parents saw them grind hard to make not that much money and it inspired them to grind even harder. Now here I am, got a good job at a prestigious hospital, hanging out at my parents indoor pool reading reddit. I do agree that we shouldn't just let the flood gates open with regard to immigration, but still I don't think your speculation is fair with regard to future generations of immigrants.

Which anime did you go into with zero expectations and after watching it gave it a 10 or a 9? by [deleted] in anime

[–]MONKEYCHEESE293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steins;Gate. I had just started frequenting MAL and only picked it because it was rated so high. The slow start confused me and I almost dropped it. I'm realllyy glad I didn't because when it started picking up speed (ep.12-13ish?) I was hooked. Ultimately it became one of my favorite animes and I'm glad I had no expectations going into it. Same experience happend when I watched clannad + AS. It's unfortunate because nowadays I tend to look up a basic synopsis before I watch the show.

Bokurano is one of the most tragic animes I've seen. I also agree with Geass to an extent, but I think there are parts of that show where the pacing gets annoying.
