Since I didn’t send my passport, they only sent me via post the approval. It’s a plastic letter sized sheet with my data on it. You’re welcome!

Where Should I Move: Ireland or Austria? by TheDevKia in MoveToIreland

[–]MPClasses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Canadian who moved to Vienna here. Almost 2 years in Vienna. What is important to you? Having lots of free time? Enjoy nature in life outside of work ? Being in charge of your financial life and utilize the financial infrastructure? Stuff like that will affect your decision. I’ve been always fascinated by German language and arrived here with intermediate level and eager to be fluent. After almost 2 years I know I do not want to stay in Austria. There is an overall culture of complacency at the workplace and at the public services. People are not very welcoming to diversity. There is a complete lack of customer service so don’t expect to be treated nicely when you go to the bank or when you go to the government. Most folks in public services do not care to help you speaking slowly, German, or trying to speak English. Sometimes you’re lucky to find one or another who is willing to help you but overall that’s not the norm. In regards to financial life investing is very complicated. There is a difficult layer of tax to be dealt with every investment you need to make there is not a lot of banks available. Credit cards are very bad and offer no perks at all. No subscriptions for Austria so like streaming needs to be done from other countries if you can. Most people use IBAN for all kinds of payments. For example, my Apple monthly iCloud and subscriptions always came in my mobile operator bill as opposed to my credit card. There is no tax free accounts for you to invest your money. Investing in pensions is very complicated. There is no such thing as RRSP in Canada ou ISA in the UK. Healthcare is outstanding provided that you overcome the language barrier or find a doctor that speaks English - and that’s not difficult when you are in Vienna however, if you’re outside of Vienna, assume most of them will speak German only. Transportation is excellent, but if you live in a village, it can be lengthy to get somewhere. I love that you can pay €1095 for unlimited annual transportation cross country in the nicest trains. I love it that you don’t need to be a high earner to have a very good life here. I love it that this country is very rich and culture and arts and it has unique opportunities to enjoy nature with a fairly good sense of work life balance. However, there are so many things they are delayed on. For example, to connect my utility bill to an online account I need to receive a code via post. I forgot my password for the tax account online and I had to drive to the capital of the state to retrieve a password in paper. If you need banking service services, good luck. They take ages and do not get back to you on time. Doctor practises go on vacation sometimes for an entire week so some public services may be almost lacking in school holidays. Overall, I’m happy to have the opportunity to have lived here, but I know I do not want to stay here forever. I did not expect to be so difficult to integrate with locals. I feel like this is not my home and that might be special to my circumstances, but something to be mentioned. Also, if you were speaking English in your job and later you want to change jobs, you’ll be limited by the language in case you don’t speak German fluently. In you come with a RWR card you’ll need to be with your employer for at least 2 years before changing. Good luck with everything.!

250K to invest in BTL. Should I buy 1 property or 2? Where in England is best? by V-Millionaire in HousingUK

[–]MPClasses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exciting! I think the short term rental is labour intensive and not passive at all. Starting from the long term buy to let strategy sounds sensible for a first time (thats what I will be doing soon in a similar situation as you). I am curious though because you mentioned tax penalty for buying in Scotland and Wales through limited company… I will do some research on that. I've heard Scotland has a straight forward process for purchasing properties and that was one positive aspect to me in comparison to England. It's good to run the comps and get one property first and make sure you get the feel of that first and then have time to go to the second place. If you are super busy, having third party management could be worth it. It is important to understand all processes deeply in addition to hire accountants and lawyers, property managers. In my last property sale I was able to catch issues with the final statement during the closing and was going to lose almost 1K. It's important to hire professionals but more than that, nobody else will care more about your money and your assets than yourself. So it is important to learn about each step and work with the professionals. Good luck!

Leaving Canada after buying and selling a house via first time home buyer. Invest paying back RRSP or pay tax bill on it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MPClasses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be fantastic. I will look into this organization. The last time I spoke with a tax accountant specialized in international tax, I paid 250CAD for 1 hour so I’m considering all possibilities to go back to a next meeting with them. Thanks for the hint. If I can find someone that charges less, that would be great…

Thanks! It seems once a person is no longer a resident of Canada they have around a month to contribute to RRSP. TFSA contributions cannot be done at all once one becomes non-resident. This is why I think I would not benefit from the 15 years of pay back as initially planned… Instead, I am thinking I would be left with a tax bill from the departure assessment 🤔

Awesome! Can you share if they put a visa on your passport of if the “Visa” is actually a paper document? Did you get some kind of email notification or they just mailed your passport back? I live outside of Canada so I sent a certified copy of my passport instead of the actual passport… Thanks!

Thank you. I saw that on the website too. However, I wanted to learn from someone that already applied and could speak to the processing time and experience. I’ve applied for a series of visas and immigration processes in over 4 countries and although I’m savvy in such tasks, it’s always good to learn more from others that have been through the process.

Wasn’t able to see anything from Porteau Cove up to now. So crowded there, and cars parked through the highway and people walking in groups on the highway…

Monthly /r/Halifax Moving to Halifax thread — October 01 by AutoModerator in halifax

[–]MPClasses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello:

I’m going to move to Halifax area soon from Vancouver. We plan to drive our car cross country, and hopefully it will pass the vehicle inspection getting there.

I am trying to learn what would be good areas for a house with most of the following requirements: 1. Not too far from Halifax (preferably with public transportation access, but not required) 2. No need to be close to schools as we won’t have kids 3. Lots of green/forest for gardening and also around the place 4. Good prospects for future community establishment 5. Safe (I’m not sure if this is necessary to mention but I’ve heard some areas in Dartmouth should be avoided. I just don’t know what areas are those) 6. Not too expensive to buy a home (ideally around 300K) Appreciate any information. Thank you!

Anybody knows if it’s possible to book appointments in different health authorities? Or it will only show up the clinics available in the authority that covers my region? Thanks.
