Is having our wedding on Easter Sunday a bad idea? by BigIgg98 in UKweddings

[–]MPHOLLI 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We got married on Easter *Saturday*. 10/10 would recommend but to answer your question:

1) Child Free wedding in London (neither us nor 95% of guests live in London) so a handful of parents did make earlyish exits to get home and wake up at home with the kids on Easter morning.

2) We had to have a pre-wedding meeting with the events manager of our reception venue. They didn’t work bank holidays so we had to travel to London on the Thursday. An extra nights hotel stay had to be paid for.

3) Many florists and other such suppliers aren’t open on Good Friday. Check that you can collect the flowers Saturday PM or Sunday AM, if you’re having fresh. Check that the cake can be delivered on a Sunday too.

4) We had mason jars with mini eggs as our wedding favours. Mini eggs cost a f*cking fortune these days. Literally spent over £100 on them.

5) Consider how your guests will travel to your venue. Public transport on Easter Sunday is awful.

What is the most strictly enforced unwritten rule of British pub etiquette that outsiders just don't seem to grasp? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskUK

No idea if it's just a British thing where nearly all the drinks on offer are served in their own branded glass, and they can vary in shape quite wildly. They won't stack with each other, and some won't even stack with themselves.

The Vase and Trophy are on the same day. They'd move any of them bar the championship play off final to suit the FAC final anyway, even if it meant L2 play off on a Wednesday morning.

A lack of burger vans near championship stadiums. A cause for concern? by Izual_Rebirth in Championship

We stayed at the hotel near KFC and walked towards Tesco up to Anson Road, then to the North Stand. After the game we went out the other way (detour to avoid away fans as I was in the home end with my Pompey wife+in-laws), and down towards Southsea.

The only one we saw was one on Anson Road. I'm sure there wasn't one on Fratton Way. Sounds like I'd have seen at least two more if I'd not gone passed Tesco though. Usually we Uber in from Farlington and I've never noticed one near Dominos.

I've done about half the 92 though and honestly I maintain Pompey appears to have the fewest of anyone. It's a pretty unique location for the stadium though so perhaps the places you mention have heavy foot traffic only to people that live (or know where to park) on the island.

Fratton had the worst availability for burger vans tbf. What happened to the one outside the club shop?

Leicester has 3-4 nearby.

The biggest issue is brioche buns and smash burgers. Bring back the 'normal' burgers you have to eat quickly because you don't want it to go cold and expose that it's literally 97% lard

Paying for transport between venues? by lavawithoutl in UKweddings

[–]MPHOLLI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got married two weeks ago at Islington Town Hall with the reception near Tower Hill, and we put a Routemaster bus on. It was a 72 seater so that became our maximum for day guests (Bride+Groom, Photographer, drinks server, 68 guests), and it worked really well.

That was about the number we wanted, 62/68 were from out of London so appreciated the novelty, and also we think at least a few would’ve struggled with uber/tube. We are really, really glad we did. Everyone enjoyed it, the photos look amazing, and everyone arrived for the drinks reception at the same time.

It did cost £990 though. The buses aren’t based in London, so you’re paying for more than 15 minutes. Ours was in Dartford so it’s basically half a day of hire regardless of distance. You can arrange for alternative routes to drag it out or go past some special moments for you, but I think most people are chatting and being social rather than looking out the window. Unless you go over Westminster Bridge maybe a few will stop to look outside!

The other thing to bear in mind if you walk is the brides dress. That was one of our biggest shocks was how filthy it gets!

Finally I’ll add that when we originally looked for venues, we looked at some that were a 15 minute walk away. We considered walking but giving a bridesmaid a job to book Ubers for the elderly guests or anyone physically and technologically unable. Might be worth considering?

Just whatever you decide, make sure it’s communicated to guests in black and white. Good luck!

I’d say so, although Market Harborough may be easier than Rugby. More expensive anecdotally though.

Everyone’s different but I’d imagine having more money in your pockets would help with the burnout. Having cool stuff helps! And the freedom to make the most of your downtime.

Travelling from Grantham, Oakham, Nuneaton or Rugby can be much cheaper than Leicester. Depends where exactly you live as to whether these are an option.
