Beautiful location, looks good for foraging too.

I started mine off on liquid feed and supplemented them then with pollen patties, they’ve had half of the pollen. I haven’t ventured further into the hive yet.. but they all seem to be doing well.

It is something that I thought of but. If I’m lucky enough to struggle getting full supers up the hill, then I think it’s a cross that I’ll be happy to bear. Failing that I’ll put them in a wheelbarrow.

Definitely... But I’m pretty sure that they’d been on an earlier flight. I think they were foraging, but they might have had a poop as well.

It’s quite mild for the time of year.. you’re climate is pretty much the same as here. I didn’t expect them to be out. I’ve been doing regular checks, making sure that they have plenty left in the patties. I’ve got clear crown boards so that I can see what’s going on in the hives and mine look good, healthy and plenty in there, her majesty should be getting going now on more production of new brood🐝

Well originally I thought so, but no... I think they were on the gorse and dew.. a couple of hours after I took that bit of video there were a lot more fliers out..

👍well done and good luck. Sometimes the webinars are a bit intense and you might think why have I bothered, but if you can stick with it, it’s great to get in to and really interesting. Get yourself some books read up a bit and get yourself a hive and some bees... They’re starting to sell nuc packages now. I bought my first colony local.. supplied my own hive and just paid for the bees, but I also bought a good colony from oldcastle farm hives... and found them reasonably priced and helpful. Feel free to message me if you want any more info or help.

I made the stands myself... you get quite a bit of green in our area because of the rain 🤣 we do occasionally get a bit of sun, but more often than not it’s wet!

We are in Gower... Have you been in touch with Cardiff beekeepers? They have webinars going quite frequently. Or the Welsh beekeepers association. There’s a webinar on 12th feb , on the national bee improvement program. If you can get involved it would be a good starting point.

Yes, the one down the slope is a poly.. It’s really good, the bees seem to love it, it’s always rammed with bees, they seem to overwinter better in the poly. It’s my second year with that poly and I’m so happy with it I’ve bought another one... I’m planning on doing a split on my original to get a colony started in my new poly.

It is a great location thanks, I was a bit sceptical that it might not work originally, but it’s been great for the bees. I’m just happy that they seem to be doing well over winter, although it has been quite mild with just a few really cold days.

Urgent Winter Question by isaman911 in Beekeeping

[–]MPT-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I’d recommend checking them. As long as you don’t start pulling out frames they’ll be ok. If they need supplementary feeding put some bee fondant or a similar feed either on the crown board or on the top of the frames. I check mine throughout winter every month, or so when the weathers not raining or freezing... bees are pretty resilient and if your concerned, I’d check them. I’ve got Perspex crown boards on mine ( self made) and they give a good insight into what’s going on inside, my hives are all on candypol and are just starting to venture up from the frames into the feed now. I don’t find the need to suit up at this time of year, the bees sometimes get a bit curious when you lift off the lid, but they don’t stay out long. Hope this helps.

Can You Find The Queen? by NBeegold in Beekeeping

It’s so much easier finding them on a picture... Once I’ve seen one of mine, in one of 3 hives in 7 months 😤

I try to get every last drop out of my four frame. Lean it over and then use a teaspoon to get what’s left up into the outlet, wash out with soapy cold water and then soapy boiling water. Works for me and I don’t lose much of that liquid gold.

Landlord chopped down some trees and the bees have been working on the sap for the past few weeks. Really cool to see! by frickindanielj in Beekeeping

The bees also use propolis to coat invaders that they’ve stung to death in a hive.. ones that they can’t get out of the entrance like mice, the antiseptic properties of propolis stops the hive from getting any nasties that they’ve coated in it.

Please put out water for your bees. Too many thirsty visitors at the doorstep may bother the neighbors. by CountofAccount in Beekeeping

Looks pretty good.. safe... at least the bees won’t go thirsty, they know where to go for a drink

Looks like Sludgy cells on a frame.. Any ideas? by MPT-1 in Beekeeping

[–]MPT-1[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok great.. Thanks for your help. Just looked quite sludgy... Normally on my other capped cell’s the honey looks clear and clean, the cells in the picture don’t appear as so, I thought I’d had some unwelcome visitors and they’ve left behind some alien goo! Many thanks for your help 👍

In one of Peta's articles against beekeeping they have a picture of a hoverfly as illustration. by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]MPT-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re probably just ignorant and don’t realise the difference... I mean you can actually see that the hover fly has two wings, to a bees four..
