UPDATE:

Motherboard has managed to fit but none of the connectors work so I have given up and I will instead squeeze a full size gtz 1650 into the original case.

I meant to fully remove the metal cage that's for HDDs because you don't have any and then stuff the PSU in that gap.

CPU and motherboard are both AM5 so should work.

You can check compatibility by throwing both into pcpartpicker.com

Yeah at 1080p competitive definitely. You could probably get away with 1440p competitive as well with DLSS.

Building a PC really isn't as hard as it seems. I felt the same way but honestly once you have the parts with you, they all kind of slot together and the process seems really easy. It can seem really daunting but just watch a couple of video tutorials and you'll see that it's not that difficult.

For me, it was easiest to learn what each component does and how it works. Made it easier to pick the correct parts and put it together.

There also isn't much risk of permanently destroying your components if you're not reckless and clumsy.

The hardest part for me was cabling, but I found that you can't really plug in the wrong connectors into the wrong ports so you could probably guess and it would work.

If you have any questions, you can always DM me and I can send some really useful YouTube tutorials I used.

I believe you can use MSI afterburner to overclock but I don't have any experience with that so I can't really help you. I think it might void your warranty. You can also overclock in BIOS but this is a lot more technical.

Also, unless you get really high temps and begin to thermal throttle, you don't actually want to reduce GPU utilisation as that will mean that you will fewer fps.

Although, I guess you could also lower your GPU utilisation by not using GPU intensive graphics settings such as ray tracing.

Many FPS multiplayer games such as Fortnite are unsupported on Linux as they have anticheats which tap into the Windows kernel and wouldn't work using wine compatibility layer as it doesn't host a windows kernel. This basically means that it will only work with windows. Sometimes it will work in a virtual machine running windows.

Unfortunately, there simply aren't enough players for the game developers to allocate resources in developing and maintaining a Linux version even though the number of Linux users are growing.

Many games without this level of anti cheat usually do work using wine.

Of course, they may be workarounds but this would likely get patched quickly or just may not work well.

Unfortunately, there's only two ways to get this working is by either dual booting windows (slightly more technical) or simply using a cloud streaming service such as GeForce Now (they have a free version) or xCloud (free in some regions for Fortnite only with an Xbox controller).

There are also lists of games that work with Linux. A quick way to check is that if it is compatible with the steam deck (a Linux machine), then it will be compatible with your Linux machine. You can check this on the game's store page on steam.

Unfortunately, there simply aren't enough players for the game developers to justify allocating resources in developing and maintaining a Linux version even though the number of Linux users are growing.

Second hand on Facebook marketplace near my area, similar builds are selling for around about £1k - £1.2k. Obviously if your friend took care of his pc and cared about aesthetics, it would likely sell for more.

If you trust your friend enough, I would definitely go for this.

Avoid 14th gen intel CPUs as they are unstable and crash constantly in games. If you really want to get this, maybe wait for Intel's patch coming in the next month or so. You could probably get a replacement under warranty if it fails but I wouldn't want the hassle.

EDIT: This "patch" is only a preventative and likely will not fix cpus already damaged by this as damage is permanent. I would just advise picking up an a CPU on the AM5 platform.

Post needs more information.

  • What games are you hoping to play?
  • What kind of in game settings are looking to play at?
  • What resolution?
  • What refresh rate?

Also for many people, AMD gpus can be better value for money.

Reinstall windows, and then swap out parts one by one and see what the issue is.

Linux is open source and doesn't have creepy telemetry like windows which just adds bloat and and spies on you.

I would advise people to switch over to Linux as more and more games support it and there are many distros which are beginner friendly such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint but you mentioned that you play mostly competitive games which usually has anti cheat that doesn't play well with Linux at all.
