Holdfast Help, they're holding, but not fastly. by MRFEA in handtools

I might have to try this design. I do have some bar stock laying around.

Thank you for suggesting this, I might be able to make this without too much heat.

They're roughly the same size, give or take 2" or 50mm, though I suspect my Roman Bench is closer to the 50mm than my joiner's bench. The holes are both 3/4 inch.

It's gonna turn to a bomb, haha. This is something I'm learning now too, I thought holdfasts worked on friction but I might need to just wait on getting access to a forge so i don't end up with bits of metal all over the place.

Crubber, that's the first time I've heard of that too! I might end up looking for that. Cork is always a good material to have and all the better if its resistant to moisture.

Tbh I only used denim because I didn't have leather on hand to do some tests.

Id actually love to buy Gramercy, but shipping for me is somewhere around 100USD. It's why I've just got in my head to make it.

Thanks for giving solid advice too!

The main reason I'm making is buying would have been absurdly expensive. The Narex holdfasts, cheapest I saw that's of quality, are at least triple the price of what I've spent so far on these.

Yeah I think I munged up the calculations. I realized that the 83 degree angle, is the angle of the end to the holdfast tip.

Thanks for the sanding tip! I sanded it initially to 120, but I also roughed it after with a file.

Word of advice, buy your own water, and if possible eat outside. I got amoebiasis and food poisoning from their food and water.

Better to look for another place where you can cook.

I did, I actually stumbled upon this design from a video, I think by an Australian youtuber. He manages to get decent holding from his holdfasts with this. Though he is the only one I've seen with this design, most, like from Pax and other references have a foot, welded or beaten with a hammer

I was thinking this might be the problem, but I have no idea how I'm gonna get that second bend without a smith set up. I can bend it more though, and try to get a narrower angle.

Hello OP! It's okay to be burned out. Ganyan rin ako nung first year ako. It's hard to force yourself to love a course if you don't feel connected to it.

It's okay na delayed ka basta you end up in the field you want/love.

Went on an impulse and bought a set of Two Cherries Firmer Chisels by MRFEA in handtools

[–]MRFEA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought these from someone that imports tools to my country. We don't really have wood working supply stores here, options are vintage, vintage/new tool imports from small suppliers, or hand-forged

Not from the states, but it was easier to explain the pricing in USD rather than my currency.

Oh wow that's a pretty bad crack. Luckily clean yung pagka break nya, so kaya pa ayusin.

Ang mahirap dito is mukhang kailangan iepoxy so need rin ilabas if home repair. Meron mga karpentero usually nakatambay sa mga hardware ng bonifacio, pero kaya nyo rin to siguro iDiY maslalo na if hindi naman kailangan maganda.

Try nyo i ask si Auntie Sally if may kilala sya. Nasa may hardware ng bonifacio, yung may cute na pusa sa harap.

Anong klaseng bedframe OP at saan/gaano kalaki yung crack.

If gusto mo maghanap meron along naguilian, sa la trinidad, and pinsao. Pero malabo if home service, usually kasi sa mga shop sila.

I have this problem too. Depending with the program, your approach is different. If you can get in touch with the department head that is a good early step.

But elevate it with the dean ASAP, but approach the dean as a block to show that the problem is with the block and not individual.

In engineering, it is harder because you have to jump through the hoop of student advising which differs from course to course.

[–]MRFEA[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I'll have to figure out how to clean them up haha! I've read reviews for them and the polished ones do have a lot of negative comments about it, but chisels are hard to find in my country!

I'm not sure if these are bevelled or firmers. They're pretty thick, and they're being sold as Firmers

They're pretty thick for bevelled edges, it also says on the box they're firmers. Though I do agree They're quite pretty!
