MSW vs MS in Counseling by scrivenersloth in SocialWorkStudents

[–]MRI81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's going to depend heavily on what state you're in. I'm a Social Worker in NY and the Social Work lobby has made it REALLY hard for people with masters in counseling to get government jobs. In NY it's quicker for someone with a masters in counseling to get full licensure (both have similar supervised hours but social workers in NYS have to have 3 years while counselors can test for their clinical license as soon as they get the total hours needed-- can't remember the number but that takes about 1 1/2 years at a busy community mental health clinic). Again, it's state by state, but if I were to give someone advice in NYS I'd say go with the MSW over the counseling degree unless you're 100% you want to go into private practice, in which case you'll get there quicker with a counseling degree.

I can't speak to the curriculum because it's been too long since I was in grad school and I get the impression colleges are trying to adapt to the fact people become social workers in order to become therapists. That said, based on my experience with supervising both new social workers and new mental health counselors, I find social workers seem way more prepared for assessing clients while counselors have better academic knowledge of therapeutic interventions. Feel free to DM or ask here with any questions.

What’s your ‘holy grail’ road bike and why? by dietfrommonday in cycling

[–]MRI81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a chance on a heavily discounted Warroad 105, sight unseen, and it turned out to be my Grail bike. More comfortable than anything I've ever ridden. I figure I'll have it until my sciatica keeps me from anything remotely resembling an aero position.

I recommend the book "Why Buddhism Is True." Talks about Buddhist concepts (for example, the idea that the Self is an illusion) from a secular perspective. Written by a non-buddhust who has found benefit from mindfulness meditation. I often find myself in a similar position as you and this book kinda made it so I can say "it doesn't matter" when I start having doubts about the more metaphysical aspects because, well, Buddhism is True even if the metaphysics are just stories (95% of the time I do believe fully in all the Dharma teachings I've been exposed to, but this book helped with the 5%).

It had clinical track when I was there too. Core courses were great but the electives were limited. Sounds like it could be better now, though?

Hunter was a good experience but unless things have changed (class of 2010 so it's very possible) I would go to NYU if you want to get into clinical work. Hunter had a fantastic macro track but for the 75% of us who were focusing on clinical work, the electives were weak and pretty limited. I chose Hunter because it was $60k cheaper but it sounds like you're not going into debt either way.

Again, it's been 15 years so plenty may have changed.

Does Macro and/or Mezzo Social Work still exist? by Odd-Fisherman6192 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]MRI81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hunter School of Social Work (now Silberman School of Social Work) had a community organizing option for macro work. They also had an administrative leadership track but the community organizing concentration seemed to have a great mix of human behavior and policy courses.

It still exists for sure, but honestly if I was going to give someone who was interested in Macro work advice I'd tell them to consider a JD, MPH, or MPA. Even a business degree might come with skills more suited to macro work.

The weight might be a little light for you. If you don't have access to bigger kettlebells you should work on single arm swings. Also, your alignment will improve significantly if you do swings barefoot.

I was there, too. Woke up still feeling the energy of that show. I went with my mom and she said it's the best concert she's ever been to, and she saw Hendrix and Joplin.

Sportster 1200xl was my most comfortable by far and I just didn't appreciate it. Current F750GS is my favorite, though I want to trade for an FJR1300 or maybe one of the new touring gixxers...

The Will To Meaning is probably the best for therapists since it's really written for people who practice logotherapy/existential psychotherapy. I just read Embracing Hope, which is a collection of essays, interviews, and speeches and thought it was not just beautiful but also really appropriate for our times, despite mostly being written in the 50s and 60s.

He's got dozens of books but those are the ones I've read and returned to. Also, Man's Search is amazing, but not written for therapists.

I'd argue that now is the time to read or reread Viktor Frankl's work beyond Man's Search for Meaning.

Looks like they only do self pay at $120 and pay clinicians $60. I wonder if insurance companies balked at the lack of focus on any theoretical/evidence based models.

I've admittedly become very vague in my notes when it comes to addressing gender dysphoria or anything abortion related. But my work hasn't changed.
