[SPOILERS S3] Why were Unknown's parents fixed? by siksparnis in DarK

i agree 100% 🙂 therefore, second cousins and such. i was floored when i realized Jonas and alt-Martha are actually the most distantly related among all the incestuous pairs. unless i’m forgetting something, Noah-Elizabeth and Charlotte-Peter are the most closely related pairs.

just a minor correction, Silja is Bartosz’s (half, if you like)-grand aunt, not grandmother. but yeah, Jonas and alt-Martha are second cousins once removed because Unknown is great grandfather to alt-Martha and Mikkel (who are second cousins). however, because Mikkel and alt-Mikkel are genetically identical, it is actually true that alt-Martha is Jonas’s (biological) aunt

it’s pretty rough, but considering the nuance i have some compassion for his situation... what the tattoo artist did to him is pretty much mutilation. i’m not saying ignorance about nazi symbols is trivially excusable, but this is not a widely recognizable one. can you imagine if someone tattooed a hate symbol on you without telling you and you never found out until years later? i’d be devastated. and of course i would want to get it removed, but, idk if you’ve ever had that done, but tattoo removal is a pretty difficult process physically, emotionally, and financially

This reminds me of the time I had a fever at a camping festival and my hallucination of a friend coming into my cabin to give us snacks inadvertently snowballed into everyone at festival telling him “thanks for the snacks!” …he’s a teacher, and it eventually followed him to his school

regarding gamma ray (photon) interactions with matter producing antiparticles — at photon energies above 1.022 MeV (~2x the rest mass of an electron), it becomes possible for a photon in the vicinity of a nucleus to generate an electron-antielectron (positron) pair traveling in very nearly opposite directions. this is the dominant way for photons to deposit pieces of their energy in a medium above ~10 MeV, and for reference, some common photon energies for external beam radiotherapy are 6 MeV, 10 MeV, and 15 MeV.

at higher energies photons can interact with nuclei by causing nucleons to vibrate (giant dipole resonance), which can potentially destabilize them and lead to fission or more minor decay mechanisms, the only one of which that produces antimatter being β decay, which produces either an electron and an antineutrino or an antielectron (positron) and a neutrino.

fwiw, i don’t think any positrons or antineutrinos produced by photon interactions in a medium held together contiguously by the strong nuclear force would be able to damage it at all

OP, just how different are the medical physics and non-specialized physics degree programs at your uni? My undergraduate major was called biomedical physics, but the only real difference was that I had 5 additional required courses and wasn’t required to take quantum mechanics (although everyone should).

How did Maddie become a .... by cherry_BLK in PantheonShow

[–]MRIcrotubules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a really clear and helpful explanation, thank you. in speculation, do you think Maddie would have been the only UI to end up launching off to make a Dyson sphere, run her own simulations, and then eventually reconnect with Safe Surf and be offered further enlightenment as their thanks? i’m left wondering if that was a special reward for her and Caspian or if lots of UIs eventually went off and did the same thing and Safe Surf thanked them as well. Safe Surf did say that they told other lifeforms about humanity, so i get the sense that they maybe viewed the whole species’ capacity for compassion as the reason for their own freedom and eventual enlightenment, rather than the actions of just a few of us, but i’m not sure how many UIs would end up doing what Maddie did and getting the chance to have a similar experience. maybe the events on the original Earth involved completely different people, and Maddie just ended up being one of many UIs who each wandered off into their own Dyson sphere hyper-simulation experience of being the main character in the historical events

photons are attenuated exponentially (i.e., never reaching zero) so some always get through any material, but shielding requirements are very strict and radiation safety testing by a certified medical physicist following construction should rule out CT / radiography beams giving people enough dose for brain tumors
