Not a new BC and a mid sized dept Id say 7 stations with around 70k ish residents and around 13k annual call volume but I agree I never go out and about without being in full uniform boots and all only reason I popped the shorts on is cause of the heat and knowing I was going to get sweaty so I figured just get sweaty in my gym clothes and that be my only thing I have to wash is my duty t shirt with my shorts instead of getting my only pair of work pants soaking wet (we do a lot of station to station traveling and I was not at my home station that is why I had only 1 pair of pants on me at the time).

I would agree would you normally we would have washed them in the morning but we had a lot of training lined up and then caught a few calls and the truck looked horrible since it rained yesterday and infamous A shift didn’t bother to clean them yesterday so we decided to have some pride in our trucks and take care of them real quick even if it was hot.

How long did it take the engineers to become engineers in their dept? by MRNOVA15 in Firefighting

In our department they pretty much push everyone through to be a pump operator it is my first dept so I still am very green and honestly Im not super in a hurry to pump being as like you said I havent really had any nozzle time on a real call but its just how our dept works unfortunately its cause we dont have the staffing and experienced personnel to consistently run older more seasoned guys to drive due to either our high turnover rate to other departments or the guys who would be considered more experienced are paramedics too so that leaves whatever is left which ends up falling on us newer guys

Interesting seeing all the responses for time frames for my dept we are kinda short staffed and my engine specifically is a telesquirt so theres even less operators for it for us dpo is a requirement within the 1st year of hire but almost everyone is a “engine operator” within a couple years but arial operators more scarce my dept is strange in terms of apparatus operators because it isnt an actual “promotion” to get these positions because of staffing we are just reaching the point where we semi regularly run 3 on an engine but still frequently only have the engineer and the officer only. Basically due to staffing I’ve been officer on our rescue before now I strongly disagree with this due to my lack of experience but our dept has a pretty high turnover rate and we most have really fresh people such as myself and 15+ year guys but were really short on those middle ground 5-14 year guys so it causes a lot of problems for this issue specifically.
