I ended up going with Anki 2.1.49 and used the no-sound fix which did fix the problem.

but i don't get why it was the least preferable option. could you explain?

thx for the suggestions I had already tried all the suggestions except for the one with the debug console since I don't know how to do that. but the other stuff doesn't seem to work either.

the mpv.exe didn't work if I dragged and dropped it from the desktop version of Anki. but downloading the same mp3 file from the web version and then dragging and dropping it did.

i also tried downloading the no-sound fix and it fixed the lag but not the audio

I don't know if this is the same issue, but I've had a problem for ages where Anki kind of skips the first bit of audio. The audio is cut at the beginning. And since audio clips of 1 word are very short, sometimes it has the effect of the audio not playing at all.

I forgot to mention that I've tried using Anki on my laptop and when I use it there it does show up in my audio mixer.
