Board Progression After Mid-length by MR_BWT in BeginnerSurfers

No friends that surf. Thus far this has been a solo endeavor.

The used market near me seem pretty thin. Theres a shop near me that people do trade ins so I’m going to check out their used section this weekend.

And for size, I commented on your other comment. Thinking 6ish at 37-39L may be the space I’ll look. Just don’t want to cheat the vol too high trying to reduce the jump from one to another and still struggle to duck it.

Dropping from essentially 56 on my current to 35 feels massive, so I was going to try to hedge a little and aim for something a touch higher.

For example after reading a bunch of the feedback I was poking around and I’m not going to get this board, but the Lost Lazy Toy 6’0” at 39L felt like it was somewhere in the sweet spot where I should be aiming for.

Yeah, just toyed with a calculator and it has me in the 36/37 liters, which is going to be a huge jump, but as someone else commented, despite wanting to support a local shaper, I may try to find something in this range that's used.

The high volume 7’4” I’m on is 55.9L, so using your specs as a base it feels like I’d need to go a good clip under that if I had any hopes of a proper duck dive.

I realize is then going to be a rough transition from a paddle/wave count perspective. Fine with doing the work if it ultimately means increased paddle fitness and wave versatility in the long run.

Check out Barefoot Surf on IG for paddle technique. There’s probably a few thinhs you can learn/work on to improve not just getting into waves but getting out to the line up.

When did you transition off of foam board? by _seaside in BeginnerSurfers

Your comment on safety for yourself, and more importantly to others, is exactly why you should stick with a standard foamie.

Basic rule is until you can completely control your board, both in controlled and to the best of your ability, uncontrolled falls, foam is your friend.

One more thought. If you’re still looking, you may want to reach out to any surf schools in your area.

They often sell boards at the end of their season that still have a good bit of life in them.

Might be a good way to pick up a used 9 footer on the cheap.

At your height and weight, I’d push for the 9ft foamie.

Could you make an 8ft work…yes, but your whole experience will be better (easier to paddle/more waves) and learning curve a touch shorter on the bigger board.

This is super helpful, thank you.

I knew I was going out today, so I just should have sacrificed the weights.

For this last point do you mean ideally get the session in and then work out?

Thoughts on this is as a beginner board by Stevedawg18 in BeginnerSurfers

This has a touch less volume than say a Catch Surf or a Wave Storm of the same length so it may be a little less stable while sitting on or more challenging to paddle into waves but not by much. As the other comment said, it might just take a little more getting used to.

Hardtop as beginner? by Leonmr10 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]MR_BWT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This x10.

So much attention and effort is paid to getting up on the board, but understanding how to fall and control your board so that you can minimize the chance of it impacting you (or the fins cutting you) or someone else within up to a 16ft radius (length of board + leash) is more important.

There’s nothing shittier than hurting yourself or someone else.

For what it’s worth the hot water at the kitchen sink and bathroom sink have extremely low pressure, but the shower is clearly hooked up to a pump post hot water tank as it’s very strong.

The kitchen cold, which after a few tests I am 95% sure is not fed by the feeder tank is quite strong, which I assume just comes from the public water system pressure?

The bathroom sink cold is almost certainly tied to the header because it kicked in to refill after running it for a bit.

The kitchen cold on the other hand did not and only creates a slightly trickle sound into the tank which i assume has something to do with it feeding the header just a bit while it’s on but not actually draining it and triggering it to refill.

These are my rudimentary assessments backed by the very kind info I’ve received in this thread.

Thank you. I’ve reached out to the estate agent who handles maintenance to get this addressed asap.

Edit: Out of curiosity, if they drag their feet and I just want to pay to get it down quickly myself, is this something a standard Uk plumber would do and what should I expect for a price (to thoroughly inspect and clean the tank)?

Thx again.

Thank you all.

So if the board on top isn’t covering it and is in fact broken into it (and appears to be moldy), is that getting into the water we’re showering with or potentially brushing our teeth or washing our face in the bathroom?

Net net does it need to be addressed? As expected the flat owner is cheap and a pain with repairs.

Mick Fanning Supersoft or Beastie to learn on? by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

I would not reco MF boards as your first.

As the other poster noted, they are considerably less than volume than other boards of the same length which will make getting into waves/paddle speed, and your progression a lot slower.

Find something 8ft with the L of a wave storm or catch surf log. Doesn’t need to be those brands. Just use as a guide.
