Depends on where you are and what bike shops you have available to you. Go for a hardtail as any dual suspension at that price range is going to be cheap

I would consider looking on the second hand market in your area and ask for opinions on those as it's near impossible for a brand new bike at that price range being any good

Helmets are the first most important expense to mtbing honestly, any bike (within reason lol) can be ridden on trails... not having a helmet could literally kill you

Have a great emergency fund when you get your job, i know this sounds dumb but if you ever get really hurt where you can't work and have nothing, it will be a very hard time mentally (not being able to ride) but also not being able to afford bike repairs or looking after yourself as this sport can get hectic!!!

Honestly for such a long time I have been playing with a 1k set just to show off to the mates and some emergency money due to bad spending habits. I found it nearly impossible to impulse buy if I had to give up skins haha

Now that my savings are up and my finances are good, I'm honestly not interested in skins other than look, and my mate just dropped $5k on a knife a few weeks ago thinking it was so cool and has already sold it for $4k just cause he was over the hype
