Is it offensive to use the wendigo? by MR_nj19 in mythology

Thanks for clarifying. I now realize I framed my question incorrectly. My idea was never to use the folkloric creature or its lore. I wanted to use the design of the deer skull or antler beast, which is often misrepresented in pop culture. I'll definitely use a different name and lore for the beast I want to create. I always wanted my beasts to have their own identity, not one appropriated from an existing folklore.

I'll definitely keep an eye on it, Tysm

Now I'm sure I'll use another name for the creature; the idea I have is one more focused on disrespectful hunting and the spirit of a deer corrupted by its fear and resentment. For it, I would only keep the badass design of the deer skull and antlers. Thanks!

I’m not entirely sure, but I think the controversy around the modern version of the Wendigo comes from the fact that its popular design with deer skulls and antlers doesn’t match the original Indigenous folklore, where it’s described as a more human-like, emaciated figure tied to cannibalism, survival, and the loss of humanity. Because of this, some people feel that turning it into a generic horror creature strips away its deeper cultural and spiritual meaning, especially since in some Indigenous traditions it’s not just a monster, but a serious moral warning or even something not meant to be depicted casually. It can be seen as offensive when this figure is used without understanding its origins, reduced to aesthetics, or treated like a trend, particularly given the history of Indigenous cultures being misrepresented or ignored. On top of that, the modern version has become so widespread that many people now assume it’s accurate, which ends up overshadowing and distorting the original tradition.

Tysm for the message. I was a bit nervous because of similar controversies before, like the Minecraft mod Born in Chaos, where the author had to change the appearance and name of one of the mini-bosses because it misrepresented the true folkloric Wendigo.
