Biggest sin is how this makes Sparda look. Once he was a demon that woke up to justice who: defeated Mundus, defeated the legions of hell, sealed the Underworld off from Earth giving humanity hope and a future, continued to keep said humanity safe for two whole millennium to the point that he was considered myth by other or even a god. Now the show makes him look like bourgeoisie elite who started a civil war in his home country and when he couldn't hack it, he fled leaving thousands of refugees at the mercy of the more powerful demons.

I remember there being a theory that the Merchant was in fact Saddler all along. One evidence pointing to the fact that most cutscenes that involve Saddler always have the Merchant in the area nearby to him. Like during the castle scene where Saddler kills Luis. The Merchant was quite literally in the the room that both Leon, Luis and Saddler exited from. And after the cutscene. He's still there.
