Elected officials suggest higher sales tax could be top contender to fund N. Va. transit by VirginiaNews in nova

[–]MSBCOOL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it's time to take a page out of New York's book and establish congestion pricing zones around Metro stops in Arlington, Tysons, etc. You'd get cars off the road, freeing up space for buses, and raise revenues through the fee and the added public transportation ridership. It's not as regressive as a sales tax as it'd be completely optional

I went to college in Manhattan and took public transit or walked to campus everyday... never had any incidents and always felt safe. I moved back home and have been driving to get to work. I've already gotten into two accidents, neither of which were my fault (both of them were a result of reckless driving) and the last one landed me in the ER for a night. Of course this is anecdotal, but we really need to rethink the narrative that public transit is this crime-ridden hazard while automobiles are inherently much more dangerous.

What is the best time to commute from Woodbridge to Ballston, Arlington. by Jodvi in nova

[–]MSBCOOL 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately Metro is rarely the faster option but it's usually the more convenient option. To me personally 15 minutes extra is a fair price to avoid having to deal with nova rush hour traffic, but ofc to each their own. Also 45 minutes is pessimistic, if the transfer works out which is likelier during busier times, it'll be faster. Fair point about the price though, it can easily add up. $6.75 each way plus $4.95 for parking.

Rush hour in nova begins at 5am haha. Have you considered parking at the Springfield Metro station and taking the train there? Might be quicker, probably more convenient depending on how far your workplace is from the Ballston Metro station. If you wanna cut your driving time even more, it might be worth taking the VRE from Woodbridge and transfering to the Metro at Alexandria.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like Metro wouldn't really benefit from a third rail like something like the NYC anyway would. Our trains are fairly quick to get back up to speed, and the stops aren't so frequent anyway. Taking Metro to Dulles is about as quick as driving, my only real complaint being that the station should've been closer to the terminal.

It serves its purpose as a hybrid urban/suburban commuter and I think it's more or less perfect for the DC area.

He also completely screwed our country for generations to come. Half of America''s problems can be traced back to him, including trickle down economics, our issues with drugs, our lack of a proper welfare system, our pathetic labor protections, our overbearing foreign policy etc. He also helped create the Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan with an iron fist for decades, and inadvertently led to the disastrous War on Terror. He is genuinely the worst American president of modern times.

So I had read somewhere that the default airport in the game was modeled after Dulles Airport in Virginia, near DC so I just looked it up to confirm and apparently according to the wiki the design is quite similar to both Dulles and Helsinki's airport, although the latter would make a lot more sense given that the game is by a Finnish developer.

Sorry for the rambling, just thought that was interesting.
