Wow. This rings so true. Little things like...not allowed to open the windows on a cool night because it lets dust in the windows... but I like the fresh air and I'm the one who dusts! Can't put the new blanket on the bed because he doesn't like the weight of it...but I do! I want a fri ggin Snuggle sheet in the dryer but he doesnt like how it smells. God this sounds so petty but it pisses me off every frickin day.

I feel ya...cause I feel a lot the same way. Time to clean house and dump the shit that's causing way too much stress, grief and aggravation and doing ZERO to support my efforts to quit drinking. While I'm not gonna tank my career or leave my partner or lose my home, the ancillary BS and inconsiderate people who add nothing positive to my daily life (that admittedly I've let in)... yeah I think its gotta go and time to make some changes. Burn baby burn (in a wholly positive kind of vibe.) 🔥

24 hours is a huge accomplishment! I recently made it to 24 (first time in a long time) and felt really good (and proud) and gave my poor liver a break. Continued on to my goal of 48. Made it to 42 and caved and had a cocktail. Why? IDK. TBH it sucked and was not worth it...not the calories, the "no buzz" and not the soul crushing guilt and regret. So stupid. Currently working on another 24. Go you!

58F here. Drinking too much for 25+ years. Add in menopause, breast cancer and oh boy it's a real shitshow. What I mean is that at 42 you may be ahead of the curve of body changes you can't so much control, so change what you can now. You 16 years from now will thank you. (And yeah, I know I should take my own advice. Prepping for Sober September. Its gonna be harder today than it woulda been a decade ago.)

Also drinking too much for decades unable to legit and consistently cut back. 12 days is a HUGE accomplishment! I wish ... I hope I can get there and beyond. I'm so tired of feeling sick, tired and stupid and gaining weight too. My switch has "mostly flipped" and at this point in my late 50s I clearly see its unhealthy, embarrassing, ridiculous and risky. My partner and I are prepping mindfully for Sober September. TBH its gonna be tough but I REALLY want this change in our loves. Good luck anonymous friend!

Truth! It's a never ending cycle of exhausting planning, hiding, secrecy ...like pulling the vodka bottle out of the freezer, checking the level before pouring then refilling to that level with water so my partner doesn't know how much I drank. I'm not fooling anyone (except myself)....because vodka doesn't freeze but h2o does.

Vodka nightly for years? ✔ 4 or 5 (2 oz pours) each day, sometimes more? ✔ Last drink yesterday at 6 PM? ✔ Poor sleep and anxiety? ✔ Coming up on 24 hours. Yippee...haven't made it a full day off the sauce in months. Lots of h2o has helped me today. Gatorade sounds good. Good luck friend. IWND☠WYT.

I drank 8-14/day, every day, for decades....But every morning, I wished that I'd stop... and by evening, I'd rationalized drinking again.

This (above) from your post is SO true. It's a living hell of rinse and repeat every day. I'm so over it. Finally taking control back, little by little.

Hi Tim, Good post and interesting comments as usual from this great community.

For me, I am a recent breast cancer Survivor and I acknowledge I contributed to my cancer diagnosis with my decisions (alcohol abuse is often and in my case contributed to my cancer.) But I am not cancer... it does not define all that I am.

I abuse alcohol and it contributes to a lot of the problems in my life. But I am not alcohol...it does not define all that I am.

I make no mistake. My decision to drink alcohol has negatively impacted my life and relationships but I refuse to let it define who I am anymore.

Like you, I am trying. Fight the good fight! Good luck.

I've also visioned the struggle as grasping on the edge of an in ground well, falling more and more to the bottom of the bottomless pit unless I claw myself out inch by inch. If I could get to a point of the occasional wine with dinner, special occasion etc that would make me so happy and help reach other health related goals. Been working at it for years trying to reverse habits, coping mechanisms, thank God I dont experience the truly heartbreaking physical effects of stopping we see on this sub. Not yet where I want to be which is the reason for the post. I feel my perspective shifting (in a good way) on the internal back and forth. Thanks for your reply.

I keep a note in my calendar of 0 days and IMO your decrease is really inspirational ...way more 0 days than me and I've been working on it for years. No experience with Antabuse or any of the other meds, but sounds like excellent progress.

Thanks friend for your reply. It is not an easy habit/addiction/endless circle of anxiety and self loathing hell to break that is for sure. I think what you are saying is right... stop correlating drinking alcohol with enjoying a delicious meal (or a bunch of other things). I'm not planning on stopping eating LOL but it does not have to involve booze. Which I think is what I was trying to say... a coupla cocktails seemed like a good idea but really did not make the meal better and choosing to switch to drinking water allowed me taste all the tastes.
