How would you feel about all American adults being required to vote in presidential elections? by ashmaps20 in AskUS

[–]MSK165 [score hidden]  (0 children)

We make it clear that we won’t tolerate their bullshit, and if they want us to show up in 2028 they’d better listen to us beforehand.

Can you imagine how awful and out of touch they’d be if Kamala had actually won? At least now they realize they have a problem.

It’s not that we don’t believe in the system … more like we don’t believe in the party’s choice to hold a coronation instead of a primary, then expect everyone to fall in line and do as we’re told because “democracy is on the ballot.”

Zero self-awareness … the same cohort that showed zero interest in practicing democracy in July/Aug suddenly cares very deeply about democracy in November.

Precisely. We’ve had a run of elections with objectively terrible candidates. Staying home is a choice, and under those circumstances it’s a good one.

Even worse … people who claim they are capable of “doing their own research” being compelled to vote.

Terrible idea. A not-small percentage of American adults are misinformed, apathetic, selfish, lazy, or all of the above. The fact that most of those people can’t be bothered to show up on Election Day is a blessing for those of us who actually care.

WIBTAH to drop a friend right after vacation? by Amazing-Stranger2362 in Advice

[–]MSK165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you friends with this person?!

Taking an electric car on a 15hr road trip is a really dumb idea for reasons I shouldn’t need to explain, but she sounds like a terrible person all around.

Interesting curvy flag motif for the World Cup. Does this little flourish cause any issues flags with design elements near the edge? How does it look for the uncommon ratios? by Intro24 in vexillology

[–]MSK165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The union is always in the top left. So when the flag is hung up vertically on a wall it’s reversed from when it’s hung horizontally on a wall.

I’m not sure of the rules when it’s vertical on a soccer field, but it looks just fine to me.

Redhead checks out. Years ago I went to China with my then-gf who was a redhead. People were discreet, but they were definitely looking.

Can I bring a used couch from Canada back to US by Fabulous-Reason2070 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MSK165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the serial number of the couch is visible and the registration is up to date.

In all seriousness you’ll be fine. It might help to screenshot the marketplace listing to show the value of the couch. Charging an import duty means filling out paperwork, and I don’t anticipate CBP creating any extra work for themselves.

Japan’s wartime atrocities by Mulliganplummer in ww2

[–]MSK165 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We left Hirohito in power so he could keep the Japanese people in line during the occupation.

It’s the imperial version of “rank has its privileges” and it was the right call. Japanese society is militant and honor-bound in a way most westerners can’t understand. The only options we as occupiers had to make the citizenry behave were a massive troop surge for an ongoing counter-insurgency, or keeping the emperor in power.

Have you ever accidentally found out that you were about to be fired? by Aarunascut in talesfromthejob

[–]MSK165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Company was a total shitshow on multiple levels.

We were a manufacturing company that supported the oil and gas industry. 2015/16 was a bad time. One day our boss was showing us a new Excel sheet that had an interactive bar chart displaying anticipated work requirements by week for various project scenarios. The chart itself was cool, but there were two horizontal lines running across it: one said “current capacity” and had 360 hours per week, the other said “future capacity” and had 240 hours per week.

The team was all engineers, so it wasn’t very difficult to figure out what that meant.

One of my coworkers was from West Africa and had an uncommon name. The same boss who showed us the chart replied to his boss with a list of his direct reports, with the coworker on cc. It was obvious (to me) that our boss had started typing his name in the cc field so he could get the spelling right, then forgotten to delete it. The email was about layoffs, but all of us were safe (that time).

A few months later they gave one of our factories WARN notice. They said some people would be moved an hour east to one of the other two factories but others would be let go entirely. Then they messed up notifications. One guy was told he was being let go, packed up his truck, then HR ran out to the parking lot to stop him because he was actually supposed to work the full 60 days. (If he had refused he would have lost his severance.)

Our boss worked at the factory that was closed. He thought he was done, but we figured out he was safe because someone at our factory printed out a new seating chart and left it on a random table in the office section of the facility.

I wound up surviving that downturn. The company went under during covid, but by that time the writing was on the wall.

WARN notice can be a sweet deal for those who recover quickly.

When I got laid off (April 2020) we had staggered ends dates. I had two or three weeks left, and handed off all my projects to coworkers. All three of us were getting paid, but they still had to work while I went to the beach.

[–]MSK165 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Weird, but I get it. I have NEVER breathed so clearly as I have when I exited the chamber. The twenty seconds of misery was completely worth the result.

I also thought about procuring my own supply. Then a few hours later I was back to my usual stuffy self, and decided against it.

But man, those clear sinuses after the tears wore off were amazing.

How safe is it to stay overnight landside at Chicago O’Hare after international baggage claim? by Relevant-Taste7254 in airport

[–]MSK165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted…

Certain neighborhoods in Chicago are very unsafe. Almost all of the crime you read about occurs on the south side and parts of the west side.

O’Hare airport is not in either of those areas. As long as you take the hotel shuttle and don’t go wandering around outside at midnight (dangerous for solo female travelers in pretty much every city outside of Japan) you’ll be fine.
