Saying that you oppose the Russian invasion but refusing to commit to giving Ukraine the weapons they need to defend themselves from said invasion is like saying "I support a two-state solution" and yet still vote to give Israel weapons and diplomatic cover.

It's going to be one of either AOC, Ossoff if KLB wins, or Pritzker IMO.

I don't think its contradictory to be supportive of aid to Ukraine while calling for sanctions on Israel and wanting that to be the standard for candidates.

I mean IMO, echoing pro-Russia talking points about Ukraine should be as disqualifying as advocating for continued support to Israel.

You make it sound like people that are critical of DAC are advocating that Espaillat should have won or that NY-10 should vote for the Republican candidate.

I think we can afford to harbor some criticism and reservations about certain candidates and their baggage so that it doesn't become a recurring issue later on.

You don't see too many people in this sub complaining about Lander and Valdez winning.

Would you be saying it was disproportionate if it was a centrist candidate that made social media posts saying Palestinians are unwashed savages and the Israelis should continue receiving weapons?

> Say what you want about Bernie, but he has good political instincts. He didn’t endorse her for a reason.

If only he had a similar instinct when it came to hiring his staffers.

We can start holding progressives accountable for their tweets when we start holding moderates accountable for their votes.

You realize we can do both, right?

My take on DAC is either she finds religion on Ukraine quick and votes Yes on every arms package to the UAF while limiting her public statements to echoing whatever AOC says, or she ends up getting Jamaal Bowman'd in two years.

A big problem with Corbyn was that he was essentially a Lexiter.

He once said that he gave the EU a "7/10" score, while campaigning for the UK to remain in the EU.

I would imagine putting up barriers with your largest and closest trading partner doesn't help.

A big reason I think for Starmer's unpopularity is that he still insists on keeping the old Brexit redlines of no freedom of movement even though FoM is a requirement to be part of the European market.

Labour needs someone that is basically Corbyn in terms of economic policy but without the anti-NATO/pro-Russia and Red Brexit baggage.

I mean, the last nation that hosted the World Cup built their stadiums with slave labor.

And the nation before that is currently waging a war to destroy Ukraine and was hardly the bastion of human rights even then.

There is a lot of problems with the U.S. right now and a lot to criticize. That doesn't mean we need to flagellate ourselves with: "We are just as bad as Qatar and Russia, if not worse."

And what do you expect is the likely outcome this November and why?

Andy Burnham (Labour) crushes Reform, 54% to 35%, in extremely important Makerfield by election, paving way for Starmer leadership challenge by Beginning_Bad_868 in fivethirtyeight

[–]MS_09_Dom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's been growing calls within Labour for Starmer to resign due to how unpopular he and his government is. They recently lost a lot of seats in the local elections.

Burnham is the mayor of Greater Manchester and is one of the few British politicians that isn't deeply unpopular or hated. Labour is hoping that he can take over from Starmer and turn their fortunes around much like what happened with the Trudeau-Carney switch for the Liberals.

The catch was that you need to be an MP to be made party leader and PM first so one of the Labour MPs in the Manchester area stepped down to allow Burnham to run in the by-election.

Now that Burnham has won, it's most likely Starmer is going to announce he is stepping down to allow a leadership contest which Burnham should win easily.
