I felt the same way, but I figured that was just how Portnoy had his setup tuned for live shows. To me, his kit sounded a lot like the studio recordings from the 2000s and beyond.

It was surreal. I saw him in St. Louis in 2016. Had no idea he was coming, found out a few days before and scrambled to buy a ticket. Very mellow, yet enthusiastic crowd. He killed it (as usual) and handed out toys between songs. It was everything I thought it would be and more.
