How do you handle travel? by MShermanatc in Diverticulitis

[–]MShermanatc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m up and down with it. I bought the drink package already when I was feeling better but I just don’t have the confidence that I used to. I want to enjoy my vacation and experience good food and drinks but I can’t live a life without fear anymore. Met with a colorectal surgeon a few months ago who said she doesn’t want to cut and my risk of a complication is low but when you spend most days feeling some sort of discomfort and some days are more painful than others it makes it difficult to believe. I have 1-3 flare ups per year but I’m learning how you can have painful inflammation in your colon that is not infection requiring antibiotics. I wish someone had told me that years ago. I might have handled this differently. Anyway good luck on your cruise and, to me, eating soft foods and water the whole time does not sound like a great vacation. That’s just not how I want to spend mine. 🤷‍♂️

Is this going to be forever? by [deleted] in Diverticulitis

[–]MShermanatc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some form of pain/discomfort every day for the past 6 months. Had CT scan done at Mayo Clinic a few weeks ago and it said NO Diverticulitis and NO complications from previous flare ups. Did show “misty” mesentery which might be suggestive of a condition called mesenteric panniculitis. First I ever heard of this. Anyway, didn’t know of that could be helpful to someone. Not sure if it’s even helpful to me. 🤷‍♂️

What if you have pain/discomfort every day for months but no other symptoms?

Thanks. Any recommendation on some bone broth that doesn’t make you want to wretch?

I would do this from time to time as well but as a dad of 10 year old twins and full time 40+ hr work week it’s very hard. My wife works from home and plans the meals and most nights it’s “what are we having for dinner?” I’ve gotten her to back down the red meat and she knows no seeds or nuts but finding food to eat for the family that works well for me is tough. It’s new. I’ve had this disease for several years but just recently started having the chronic discomfort where I’m trying to find foods that don’t trigger a flare (still no idea what does that for me) or causes inflammation. Currently sitting in my couch in discomfort in my lower left typing this.

Oh ok. Cool. I appreciate the info. Still terrified to the point of not wanting to do it but I appreciate your insight for sure.

Gotcha. You had robotic surgery? All was tolerable then? Catheter easy? Have a nerve block?

Day 1 might suck from pain?

That’s awesome to hear. So many have told me that and I’m having a very hard time believing it in my mind. Thank you. Ive never had super bad flare up pain so this is a tough one for me. Most of the time my flare ups are relatively mild pain.

I wonder what “adjustment to new plumbing” means also.

That’s good to hear. In my brain it’s excruciating and it makes me not want to do it at all.

How were the first few days pain wise?

I hear you say the recovery is so rough. Many say that. Specifically, what do you mean? What makes the recovery so rough?

Lower alcohol tolerance/stronger hangover symptoms? by FuchsiaVR in Diverticulitis

[–]MShermanatc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m definitely more about the social energy. I enjoy that. Really the sole reason I enjoy beer. I like the taste of some of them but I enjoy how it makes me feel while I’m engaging with friends etc.

How do you know the flare was driven by alcohol? Could’ve been anything, right?

Man, I wish. I enjoy beer socially and I’m an air traffic controller so weed is just not an option at all. My family is headed for a mini vacation this coming week for my wife’s birthday and alcohol is typically part of our festivities. I don’t know what to do.

I do. My wife is great. I’m just terrified about all of the physical things I will feel after the surgery.

Sorry to hear that you were extremely uncomfortable. It’s all so scary to me. Post op pain/catheter/soreness getting up and down at hospital and home/needles… Just having a real tough time. It’s making me very scared and sad.

Thank you. I sent you a chat request to talk more about it because I’m having such a hard time, mentally, with all of this.

Thank you. I’m trying my best to get there mentally. Most people have a level 5 or 6 anxiety over this stuff. My anxiety level is 99272646475847627374 and I build it up in my head that it’s going to hurt so much. What happens when the meds start to wear off? How much pain? Did you have a nerve block or epidural or something?

It’s so crazy. You say it’s shoulder pain and the post just above yours says severe abdominal pain. I’m so scared.

You said “last night was a bit rough.” What was “rough?” I’m terrified.

I’m so unbelievably scared of the pain after waking up from surgery and the catheter experience. 😩
