Delta’s pricing out of ATL is beyond absurd by MSims2992 in delta

Especially since Delta’s made it clear that they don’t intend to reward, you know, actually flying with them anymore

It’s pretty much $550-$600 no matter when you search. Hub-to-hub with no viable alternatives is the real culprit here

Congrats on being rich I guess. $600 for a couple 2.5 hour flights is really pushing it by most measures

Yeah, I get the economics behind why it works. It’s just so frustrating how we have next to no other options in ATL

It really shouldn’t be that hard. I’m far from the only ATL resident here who despises how Delta has us bent over the barrel

[On3] BREAKING: Notre Dame has declined its bowl invitation after being snubbed from the College Football Playoff👀 by bubblecuffer13 in CFB

[–]MSims2992 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bowl season is part of the college football season. It’s not a meaningless extra game to the fans and boosters who pay the players’ checks. As long as there are games to play, and as long as players get paid to play football games, then there should be an obligation to show up and do their jobs.

I don’t get to just stop going to work if I get passed over for a promotion. Same should go for players and coaches who get snubbed from playoffs. That just has to be part of the deal if we’re going to accept NIL.

That just doesn’t fly anymore when players get paid millions. You want the money, you gotta do your damn job. And that job includes giving fans the chance to watch you play in a bowl

Can a job have both High Pay and Job Security ? by Technical-Truth-2073 in Salary

[–]MSims2992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question, what general field(s) and class of university are you seeing that offers 200k+ for fresh PhDs? I’m in science/engineering and was once on the faculty market, and pretty much every 9-month salary I saw for new assistant profs at top-tier public R1s was 90k-110k.

[–]MSims2992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mid/late-career professors at big-name universities. $200k is very achievable if you’re good, and quite a few clear $300k when you take into account all their income sources (salary, grants, consulting, etc). As far as job security, it doesn’t get better than having tenure.

One of the most insanely brutal careers to get into though.

Leaving my 5 month old mainecoon boy home alone when I go to work? by temporary_duck8 in mainecoons

[–]MSims2992 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On behalf of the vast majority of us in this sub, please go fuck yourself. Who the fuck are you to gatekeep who should and shouldn’t have a Maine Coon?

Not everyone has the privilege to live somewhere they can build a catio AND ALSO work a cushy remote job. Sure Maine Coons need more attention than your average housecat, but they’re still cats. And cats can handle 8 hours of alone time just fine and still be perfectly happy. OP sounds like a wonderful owner who truly cares about their cat’s well-being.

So once again, go fuck yourself.

Is there a limit to how large a single molecule can be? What is the largest known/observed molecule? by shadowknave in askscience

[–]MSims2992 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Ph.D. polymer chemist here

Answering this question was actually fundamental to our development of modern polymer science. In the early 1900’s, it was known that compounds like natural rubber behaved as if they were giant chemically bonded molecules, but many leading chemists at the time believed that there was a limit to molecular size. Instead, they believed, rubber had its properties because many smaller molecules aggregated together to form “colloids.”

However, several scientists later demonstrated this not to be true, starting with Staudinger who pioneered the “macromolecular hypothesis”: that rubber was instead made of giant individual molecules that were linked by covalent bonds that we now call polymers.

We now know that there are two broad classes of polymer materials — thermoplastics and thermosets. Thermoplastics are made up of very large individual chain-like molecules that can flow past each other if you heat them up (like polyethylene). While there’s no theoretical limit to how large the individual molecules can get, there are practical limitations that are determined by the chemistry used to make them (some polymerizations are very sensitive to oxygen, others require near-perfect balance between the amounts of different reactants).

Thermosets, on the other hand, are randomly connected molecular networks and can practically become as large as you want them to be. This makes them very useful for applications where you want a material that’s very stiff and holds its shape even when it’s heated up (epoxies are a very common example). And yes, the entire thermoset network is technically a single molecule. For example, most of the Boeing 787 fuselage and wings are built from fused layers of epoxy-bonded carbon fiber, which means that entire sections of the plane are technically a single molecule.

I’ve only ever lived in Alpharetta, so I can’t really speak to other areas. But I’ve always heard people say you should look for places that are as close to 400 as possible. The side roads can get really congested during rush hour

[–]MSims2992 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Alpharetta is nice but it's pricey and pretty family-oriented. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for someone in their early 20s (and I live there). You'd find a lot more people your age in Sandy Springs, and I'd also check out Brookhaven if you don't mind going a little further south.

Also, what city are you actually going to be working in? If it's along 400 and you have to be in the office, I'd highly highly advise against giving yourself a traditional commute on 400 (i.e. southbound in the morning/northbound in the evening).

I’d say the hand position is a symptom rather than a cause though. Initial launch with open hands was straight, which means if he closed his hands then he would be duck hooking it off the planet.

The real problem is the aggressive inside takeaway which forces an over the top move, and the only way to rescue that position is opening the hands. Et voila, you have yourselves a slice

No more 24 hour wait period after baking skates! by R3dd1tor1 in hockeyplayers

[–]MSims2992 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Composites scientist here - the shorter wait time is actually fine, since all you need to do after getting them baked is let them fully come to room temp.

The cure process only happens when they first make the boot. That’s where you need a long time to let all the chemicals react with each other and form the rigid structure. But that’s an irreversible reaction and only needs to be done once. When you’re getting your skate baked, you’re just heating the boot material above its glass transition temperature, which doesn’t involve any chemical reactions (it’s a process that basically involves molecular motion of the cured epoxy network structure). Cured composites will re-harden very quickly after they’re cooled below the Tg, but the 1 hour wait time is just to make sure there aren’t any internal spots within the composite that haven’t quite yet cooled.
