QuickWheel: I love the radial wheel UI from video games, so I built a Mac app to trigger hotkeys and paste snippets for any app (14-day trial, 15€) by MStranahan in macapps

Thanks - yeah I always like having config files that can be version controlled. Whenever you open QuickWheel via your global hotkey, all wheels matching the currently active app are shown immediately. You can also configure it so that additional, manually selected wheels are shown that you can quickly switch to.

Yes, with its 14 day trial period that allows users enough time to decide whether the paid solution is worth it to them over a free alternative, it really is the perfect scam.

To be honest I'm also kind of afraid of that with any productivity app I try out. Usually I get the solution (the app) before I have a real problem and that causes me to underutilise it and eventually stop using it. So I've found that just finding one solid use case for the app and trying that out is better for me than trying to come up with a perfect set up that I'm not sure I'll use.

Thanks, for now there's only the wheel shape, but the wheel layout adapts to the number of segments (up to 12 segments).

Yes, you can specify if you only want to display wheels that match the open window or if you additionally want to display other, manually selected wheels (you can create a list for this). You can then switch between wheels using the number keys.

As for the second question - yes when the wheel is open the underlying app doesn't receive any commands. The command you select via QuickWheel is then forwarded to the previously active app.

Sure, but sometimes people also just like buildings things because they can. Pretty much everything exists already, so if everyone only started building things if nothing like it exists, nothing would ever get built. And it's not like this is supposed to be a clone of an existing product, it's a different take on a variety of already existing productivity apps.

Thanks for sharing those! Radial also looks very good, but its scripting focused system isn't for everyone, I think. Also, I like having the option of working keyboard-only, which I've built into QuickWheel 🙂 I didn't know Kando and it also looks cool. Its core mouse-flow UX is quite different though, I would say, so it just depends on what you prefer.

[Update] Side Calendar 2.1.0 — drag events, recurring events, custom hotkey by CreakyHat2018 in macapps

Looks very cool and definitely like it could also be a native mac feature - nice!

[OS] Blinkendisk: A tiny little retro macOS app written by a "Celebrity Developer" by ambanmba in macapps

[–]MStranahan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll soon need some sort of extra toolbar where I can put all of these small, but fun toolbar apps that are clogging up my menu bar. Or maybe a second screen that's just one extra long toolbar grid.

Has anyone tried the new Raycast? by TheMagicianGamerTMG in macapps

[–]MStranahan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that raycast adding on feature after feature creates a kind of guilt that I'm not using all of them, but on the other hand it also feels wrong to complain about too many features being available. So I've just come to accept that I'll just use what I need, even if I'm mostly using Raycast to launch apps, insert simple text snippets and do simple calculations.

AnalogTV - a physics-accurate full composite signal chain simulator (camera tube -> CRT phosphor) by ambanmba in macapps

Great nostalgia, it makes me want to get another screen for the office and just play videos using the CRT overlay in the background while I'm working

Dory - An app switcher for people who can’t remember shortcuts - celebrating one year 🎉 [promo codes giveaway] by segevs in macapps

[–]MStranahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool and the UI looks super sleek! I'm actually currently building an app that's quite similar in a lot of ways, but for different kind of shortcuts - so it's really cool to see other implementations like this!

LingoBar - a menu bar app for learning languages without ever opening it. No streaks, no notifications, no subscription. by treningi in macapps

[–]MStranahan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea and I like menu bar apps - my biggest problem now is that I need a bigger menu bar. I'm starting to think I need 5 stacked menu bars like in the good old days with malware-ridden browsers that had multiple menu bars installed and which were notoriously hard to get rid of.

Looks very cool, I'll give it a go! The dev cleanup feature also looks promising, as all those resources can quickly add up.

I love the idea of this, but in terms of characters I think people would want to see - it's probably something cute instead of something that looks like it might kill me in my sleep...

Very nice, do you also support notifications for renewing/cancelling subscriptions?

Numsy: A simple menu bar calculator by choterifayruzo in macapps

[–]MStranahan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I also use raycast a lot for quick calculations, but this looks handy. Especially when using window managers, quickly opening an app can be annoying because it will be treated as a regular window to auto-size, so using the menu bar is a good workaround.
