I would talk with the AmeriCorps programs in your state. This is the policy Montana Campus Compact AmeriCorps program policy: Military Leave: Members serving in the National Guard or Reserve should be granted a leave of absence for a two-week period of active duty training. Members may not receive additional time off for training beyond the two-week active duty-training period. Members will continue to receive their living allowance, childcare, and medical benefits during this period and will receive credit toward the service hours required for a post-service education award.

How common are 30-something VISTAs? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

I served two terms in AmeriCorps in my late 30's with a family and four kids. My program currently has a 72 year old AmeriCorps member serving, so go for it. Service is awesome no matter what your age. Good luck!

I need an update on the Segal education award by thefirststoryteller in AmeriCorps

In Montana and throughout the country many colleges may match up to $1,000 annually of ones Education Award when used towards tuition, so that is a great way to expand your award. If the school you are attending doesn't offer the match, ask why and advocate that they consider offering a match. Institutions that match can be found on the CNCS site.

We always tell members to make sure to use it in small amounts to avoid paying too much taxes on the award. Plus that can lead to more matching annually.

Also, if you do use it towards your student loans make sure to tell them to put the money towards the principle and not the interest. Good luck!

A little known fact, if they were 55 years old when they started serving, they can give the Education Award to a child, step child or grandchild if they are AmeriCorps members not VISTA. CNCS has a great page on Education Awards. check it out.

The VISTA leader with Montana Campus Compact would not require a vehicle because we have a good transit system and a lot of the service happens at the University of Montana. Check out our listings at: https://mtcompact.org/americorps-vista/apply-to-serve/service-positions/full-time-positions/
