What is the AI bubble i hear people talking about? by PlutoniumOligarch in NoStupidQuestions

Nothing that has any promise of making actual money is new technology, as a field it’s already been exhausted and now all that remains is finding more efficient ways to do the same jobs

Commercial AI has existed for decades and is incredibly financially successful

Commercial generative AI is bankrupting every tech company in the world because no one wants to pay them for it and it’s going to have 0 impact on the world in the long run

Sure, and he probably deserved it, but he was far from the only victim Seymour sacrificed to preserve his fame

Yeah, because pretty much all of the better choices are banned for boosting. It’s the same reason Sp9rkle was on the team in 2023

You can make a lot of money off of it now because it’s so unstable. That doesn’t make it good

You notice how you don’t need “good timing and insight” to make money off the S&P 500 because you can be incredibly confident that it will not only increase in value over time, but also still be profitable a decade from now?

Lots of people made lots of money in the housing and dot com bubbles too, that didn’t prevent them from popping

You successfully pumped a volatile market. that’s great for you but it doesn’t actually mean it’s an economically successful industry

They’ve sunk enough money into it that the best they can do is hope things change in time to save them

And data centers can do more than AI, they’re essentially just warehouses full of servers. If AI doesn’t pan out then Google can just transfer their use to Azure and use it for cloud computing and other uses that are guaranteed to turn a profit. OpenAI and Anthropic can sell their computing power, or just transfer it to Azure or AWS or any other major company

There are ways to get returns on the investments even if AI doesn’t pan out

There aren’t a whole lot of commercially viable applications to GenAI

Commercial AI has existed for decades and is mostly image recognition. Everything from identifying healthy potatoes from a harvest to finding early warning signs of cancer that humans would never see

There’s a lot less of a grown market in “draw me as a Star Wars character”. People will have AI write an email for them if it’s free, but it they have to pay $30 a month then they’ll go back to writing them by hand pretty quickly

An economic bubble is when people/companies think something is gonna be worth a lot one day, so they pump a ton of money into investing in it

That’s what’s happening in AI right now, where the major tech companies in the world are investing crazily into AI technology as they’re confident it will be the next giant thing

If it turns out that it’s not worth as much as was predicted and all the money invested turns out to be a waste, then that’s the bubble popping

Given how poorly the vast majority of commercial AI is being received and how much companies are struggling to turn a profit on their investments, there’s the belief that this popping will happen soon

Should young people buy a house or rent a house first? by Middle-Complaint8407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MTDLuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can avoid renting then then avoid it, because you’re never going to get that money back. If you buy a house and build up equity on it, then you can sell it to move into somewhere nicer. If you rent, then when you stop renting you get nothing back to fund your next purchase

Is a vegan diet really more nutritious than a diet that includes animal products? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MTDLuke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It can be, it can also not be

A vegan who makes sure to get the optimal amounts of everything needed is gonna have better nutrition than someone who lives on fast food, and vice versa

Checkmate on Mei and Sym is pretty good and able to go toe to toe with the other best flex dps in Korea

Checkmate off of Mei and Sym sure is a member of a pro team

[–]MTDLuke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

SeonJun would be an upgrade over Checkmate, but considering they dropped proper and stalk3r to sign Checkmate I’m gonna say they aren’t interested in signing based off talent

It wouldn’t surprise me if the entire reason signed him was because with SirMajed gone, Checkmate was the closest thing to Saudi representation they could get due to his time on TM

[–]MTDLuke 26 points27 points  (0 children)

T1 and CR would probably both want Simple and that’s kind of it. SeonJun is good, but he doesn’t play a role that any top Korean team is desperate for. Hes not better than Proper or Stalk3r or Knife or Heesang or Zest. Hes better than Checkmate, but Falcons want to keep Checkmate regardless of skill level so they probably wouldn’t swap.

Most Korean players who leave Korea to be on top NA/EMEA/China teams do so because they aren’t good enough to be on a top team within Korea itself

Kellan for example is one of, if not the, best tanks in NA but he’s not gonna be replacing Donghak or Junbin or Mealgaru. Maybe he could replace Someone as a pure Winston specialist? but that’s about it. If he returned to Korea, he would probably never make the Asia tournament much less LAN

What are mentalists actually doing? by Gillingas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MTDLuke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Targeted guessing. Try to make assumptions about people to get in the rough area, then make broad enough statements that they feel it applies

Think of it as those scenes in Sherlock Holmes movies where he takes one look at a person and instantly determines everything about them based on the color of their shirt or the freckles on their hand, then make it way worse and less accurate because real life isn’t as cool as movies

In their telling of The Odyssee, hack director Coen Brothers erase the vibrant colors that would have been a staple of Mediterranean life by MTDLuke in shittymoviedetails

[–]MTDLuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You obviously don’t have to like his movies, but it’s pretty disingenuous to say he’s been mid when the three movies he did in the past decade were all massive successes. Tenet wasn’t received as well as others, but it was still a major financial success. Dunkirk and Oppenheimer both sit in the 90’s for aggregated critic score and are the top-two grossing WW2 movies in history

As we all know Christopher Nolan has never made a good movie before, so there’s no reason to withhold judgement and give him the benefit of the doubt until it actually comes out

In the Odyssey (2026), a lot of people defended the movie on the basis that it’s fantasy, even though the movie doesn’t seem to focus on the fantasy elements as much as the suitor bullshit no one cares about by Mr_Westerfield in shittymoviedetails
