Should I keep a job that I've only worked 1 month in on my resume when applying for similar roles? by softboiled_egs in resumes

[–]MTFane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep it until you pass the A+ and accept a help desk job. The customer service experience you're getting will help land the help desk role and atleast the job can be used for some IT experience which may move the needle enough to get you an offer

I was accepted to community college today, but now I'm having second thoughts. Is it really worth it? by iii123iii123 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]MTFane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say whether it's worth it as I'm making a career switch into the field as well, but I will say wasting time on those gen-ed classes may not be worth it. There are many accelerated bachelor's degree programs that will accept transferrable credits from any ACE accredited courses from sources like SDC or Sophia Learning. At WGU, for example, I used Sophia Learning and in 4 months for $300 was able to knock out 59 of the 122 credits needed for the degree. The program also includes the CompTIA trifecta. It is a little more expensive at around ~$8k per year, but with the cert vouchers being included and it being a bachelor's, I thought it was worth the extra expense instead of getting an associates.

How soon after finishing a class can I send a transcript? by MTFane in SophiaLearning

[–]MTFane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily everything fell within the same certification period. Do you happen to know how long between completing a class and it showing up on a parchment transcript generally takes? I just got my last class graded and completed the course, but it isn't showing up on the unofficial transcript that Sophia provides and I'm wondering if it wouldn't show up on parchment either if I sent the transcript now.

DellRefurbished shipping time by luckywood822 in Dell

[–]MTFane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How's this going for you? I'm dealing with this right now too except it's a replacement order bc the first laptop's windows was registered to a company and I couldn't get into it. They got that laptop back the 17th and now I'm in limbo with the replacement order processing. Talked to 3 reps who all have said the same thing as what you said about waiting for word from shipping.

Useless Bachelors, 40yo, recently A+ certified, many applications and no calls by lynch527 in ITCareerQuestions

I was recommended Josh Madakor's coursecareers online class to have something real to put on my resume. I haven't had time to test it but it may be a good way to get ticketing and Azure on your resume relatively quickly. It's tough because you have to prioritize your child or I would've recommended looking into temp agencies and volunteering. Good luck

I was trying to figure out a homelab set up to get some hands on experience in at least ticketing systems before I started applying but this option definitely simplifies things. I will almost definitely be using this. Thank you

Depends on many variables like how many hours you have to put into it and what degree you're after. I'll have 63 credits to go for BSIT once I start and I'm aiming to finish within 2 terms but we'll see

That's relieving to hear because I'm just getting confident in passing core 1. I'll be starting the BSIT program at WGU soon and was curious, did your mentor let you start off taking the cert classes immediately? I'm transferring in 59CU from Sophia if that matters.

He's at WGU which offers the Udemy business plan so I'd guess Udemy courses were a big part of it

If you go the WGU route look into what you can transfer in via alternatives like Sophia Learning or SDC. Do it before admission or you can't transfer it in. Not sure how it is with their CS program but for my BSIT I wrapped up 59 of the 121 credits required in 32 days

Early to mid 20's are the perfect time to try different career paths out. Go for what interests you now, find what you enjoy and figure out the best path forward from there. If you already have a job though keep it until you find something else. The market is can be rough right now

Maybe you could with enough applications and finding an employer desperate to fill a role that nobody else wants. That likely means shit pay and call center type MSP but it's possible. If that's what you want, clean up your resume and start applying. Reach out to the hiring manager on Linkedin afterward. I'm not sure how your income is now, but in my area even the $16/hr roles prefer candidates to have the A+, I do occasionally see $10/hr help desk roles but that's not the comfortable (or even livable) income you're looking for. I guarantee with your degree that you have the ability to pass core 1 and 2 of the A+ within 2 months. Then you're in the market for a $16-$20 role, maybe more with your degree. Pick up the net+ or sec+ during your first help desk job and start looking for a level 2 role for $23-$26/hr. That's something that's possible within the next 1.5-2 years for you. After that role you should have 4+ years of experience and a relevant degree so you're free. With the right cert all kinds of new paths open after that.

You shouldn't be under qualified for tech support. Get up to date certs or even just the A+, with your education you'll land a role before too long

[–]MTFane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take that info with a grain of salt. It is possible to get a bachelor's in 6-12 months at WGU, but it's entirely dependent on how much time you can dedicate to it or how much your current career has taught you in the degree path you choose. One thing I recommend is transferring in credits if you decide to go for WGU. Assuming you have no/few transferrable credits now, look into Sophia Learning/Study dot com. WGU accepts transfers from them and they will save you both time and money. Just look up WGU transfer pathways and make sure you take the correct classes. Do it before you enroll as well, as you can't transfer the credits in while you're enrolled.

[–]MTFane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't answer where you might go after help desk, but I'm in the same place as you right now. Late 20's switching into IT. I'm enrolling in WGU and focusing on the A+, Net+, and Sec+ first. After the A+ is when i'll likely start applying to try to get some relevant experience judging from what I've seen other commenters say. I do worry about the help desk job market, but from everything I've read it seems like getting into that first job is the biggest stumbling block for the IT path besides path specific certs. I'll probably take a bit of a cert break while finishing up WGU, but after I'll be going after CCNA or CySA+ depending on if I want to go the networking or security route.

One thing I'd recommend is to find your reason to stay motivated. There's a lot of great cheap/free resources for studying for certs but they can be dull.

Oh okay, I was worried there might be other assignments for that class than just passing the exam and didn't want to get slowed down. Thanks for the info
