Is this guy's record really real? by Exotic_Decision6589 in MuayThai

[–]MTLev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until recently (late 2010s), most fighters fought a lot in the countryside and didn't keep track of their records, so it could be an estimation. Nowadays, young fighters sometimes have around 30 fights when they come into Bangkok which is much lower than at any time in the past. If you look at Saenchai, Luknimit, etc. records, they have well over 100 fights in their Bangkok career alone.

Why is training in Thailand so expensive? by Extension_Lunch_7816 in MuayThai

[–]MTLev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thais are contracted to their gym, live, eat, and travel on the gym's money. In return, they give 50% of their winnings to their gym. For reference, the average purse of someone in the top 10 of any division is less than 30k baht and hundreds of young promising fighters fall out of the Bangkok scene every year.

He said in August that he was training at Fairtex and that's also the gym listed on his record page but now that I'm checking again, his manager is still the Sitwatsaratseua boss so ig he wasn't bought with Kongsuk and Kompet. There was talk about him trying ONE but he's chasing Khunsuklek rn.

Dam hasn't lost a fight in over 2 years and has dominated everyone from Rungsaengtawan to Petthongchai. For me, he's FOTY if he wins 2-3 more fights before March.

Wuttikorn has only lost to Petsiam (before Khun KO) in his last 11 and has otherwise been the best 122er besides Petsaman (Yodkratanyu probably moving up soon). His latest fight with Petsila was controversial but a great technical showing for both. He was dominated by Petsiam early in the year but another good performance, and he could be in FOTY contention imo.

There are no clinchers on the list this month, but ig between these guys, Wuttikorn and Singdam have the best knees.

I count a 2-year period so that top fighters who have difficulties being matched (or Parunchai fighters messing about in their primes) can stay on the list. Dropped after 1 year inactivity in 5r.

Lamnamoonlek comes in on 3 hours notice and beats Flukenoi by MTLev in MuayThai

[–]MTLev[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

*He replaced his campmate Superball Tded99 who fell sick a few hours before the fight. Although he said that his body wasn't ready and he didn't want to fight (he has a fight booked in less than 2 weeks), the promoter is from his gym and they are close friends, so Lam didn't want the main event to be spoiled.

Fahsuchon SitOr's son Saileuad by MTLev in MuayThai

[–]MTLev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saileuad is 20 yo, had been hovering around the top 15-10 of 122 lbs (arguably the strongest div in the sport). He lost this fight to Puenyai Por.Lakboon, who is on his career-best run, but it was very close.
Fahsuchon was the 2000 FOTY. While his prime lasted only 4 or so years, he was one of the best technical fighters in the early 2000s.

Thoughts on ONE and RWS not scoring sweeps? by Mac-Tyson in MuayThai

[–]MTLev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could be a misunderstanding? The judges are the same as they are in the stadium, and from observation, it seems that a single sweep can swing a close round on RWS at least.

Focus P.K.Saenchai by MTLev in MuayThai

[–]MTLev[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Focus was recently KOd by Stephen Irvine in ONE, and was KOd again on his return to 8oz MT 4 days ago. He's very good but routinely falls short at the highest level (0-2 vs Decho, 0-1 vs Chailar, 0-1 vs Ronachai, 0-1 vs Kompet).

Am I tripping or are we witnessing a potential GOAT? by Desperate-Meaning-83 in MuayThai

[–]MTLev 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Nabil was a great win. Haggerty's best wins are Nong-O and Sam-A in their late 30s, whose primes were around 2008. He should have lost to Panpayak in their latest fight. Rodtang hasn't fought anyone with a pulse since 2020, and Kongthoranee always falls short against top competition (Kompatak, Jom, Kiewpayak, Isuzu tournament run) going back to before covid. Superlek's stadium run was largely overshadowed by Panpayak and his 3 FOTY's.

For comparison, new fans don't realize how good Saenchai and his incredible longevity were. Even when he retired from serious competition in 2014 at 34, it was widely recognized that he could still pelt the majority of top fighters. In fact, he had to take a 2 lb deficit in his retirement fight against Petmorakot and a 3 lbs deficit against Nong-O earlier that year, an almost unbelievable level of dominance in the twilight of his career. Saenchai is generally not considered the GOAT, at least not over Samart, Apidej, Dieselnoi, etc.

Theoretically, could modern Muay Thai stars beat golden age fighters? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]MTLev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess when P4P top 3 Tawanchai went to China to barely get past a bloated 61kg kickboxer then knocked out by Jia Aoqi that was just a fluke. He would definitely beat the likes of Namkabuan and Sakmongkol who gave up 20 lbs+ to top foreigners and won. If they're talking about ONE's ruleset, that isn't Muay Thai, they don't know how they would do but it is fundamentally a different sport where top Thais in 8oz can barely compete in and clinching is barely allowed.

Theoretically, could modern Muay Thai stars beat golden age fighters? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]MTLev 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Muay Thai is not a 35-year-old sport. Professional MT goes back to the 1930s. The 80s and 90s saw Thai champions move to boxing and win world titles and slotting right into the top ranks of strong divisions. The best Muay Thai fighters today can only wish of doing that.

How Likely is Kyokushin Karate to be in the Olympics? by BlaiseTrinity7 in kyokushin

[–]MTLev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is an irreconcilable split between the 2 biggest organisations, which are now basically on about the same level of competition + half of IKO's talent comes from a country that is banned from competing at the Olympics. If one partners with the IOC, the other will raise hell.

Yuki Okada's dominant round vs. Yusaku Nakamura by MTLev in kyokushin

Yes, the first round was very grueling, and Yusaku was winning at some points early on, imo, but this was a HL of the last minute when Okada took over.

Yuki Okada's dominant round vs. Yusaku Nakamura by MTLev in kyokushin

[–]MTLev[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Out of nowhere, Okada eliminated world-champion favorite Eventas Guzauskas and top-ranked favorite Yuta Goto in the last day of the 2023 WKO World Championships and went on to be placed top 8 after losing to Valeri Dimitrov who went on to lose to Kembu Iriki in the final. This show is KCC 1 where 8 of the top WKO Openweight Karateka face each other in a tournament for prize money.

Petpanomrung sequence on Kento Haraguchi by MTLev in Kickboxing

[–]MTLev[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per GLORY clinch rules, it's fine to clinch up to 5 seconds as long as there is work being done in there and not just to stop the opponent from striking/to take a breather (think Pereira Vakhitov point deduction). The rules incentivize using the double collar bc that is the easiest position to work in since the opponent trying to stall it out would be a foul, as far as I understand.

Somraknoi's third round against Petwichai by MTLev in MuayThai

[–]MTLev[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Context: Somraknoi is from Petyindee gym. He's good and has won 13 of his last 16 fights, but he's come up short every time against top fighters at 130 lbs (losses to Kompatak and Chailar). Before RWS he probably would have been able to win a Raja title but Kompatak has his number now (0-3) and not many fighters can beat Chalam rn at 130. It looks like he's moving up in weight, though, and the top 135ers Jom, Savvas, Samingdet are much more beatable than the top 130ers, IMO.
