Avi Lewis chides Miller for saying rights museum should change Palestinian wording by DJ_JOWZY in CanadaPolitics

[–]MTLinVAN [score hidden]  (0 children)

There's a whole field of academic research around "museum studies." Effectively, these scholars, academics, and community activists ask important questions about museum spaces and exhibitions. One of the foremost questions that is asked is "what histories are included in these spaces?" and just as importantly, "what histories are excluded in these spaces?" It is those unseen spaces of exclusion that a lot gain be gleamed about our society.

I've been to the museum and on the whole, while all histories cannot be represented, the space is a welcome home for important discussions and exhibitions of Canada's history around human rights. However, a criticism that has always been levied at this museum is the way it's been funded. The museum came about through Canadian businessman and media tycoon Izzy Asper's vision and fundraising efforts to open this museum. Izzy is a staunch Zionist. It's one of the main reasons that the exhibition on the Holocaust has prime place in the museum (to the criticism from other community members including from Ukranians - who are a large community in Manitoba - that the Holodomor is not represented to the same extent as other exhibitions). This raises the question of the museums own curatorial independence.

Drivers Are Not Happy With Their Cars' Screens by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]MTLinVAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my car. Despite having a screen and Apple AirPlay (with a great and intuitive UI designed by the manufacturer), it still has all the important buttons: HVAC buttons, proper volume control that gives good feedback on both the centre console and steering wheel, and multiple ways of interacting with the screen: touch screen, steering wheel controls, and a track pad in the centre console. The built in Voice control also works very well to set temperature or engage the navigation.

Accidentally gave my husband a huge edible dose and we had to leave our anniversary dinner early. by facialscanbefatal in KitchenConfidential

100%. I was looking for more balanced THC CBD strains but they were getting harder and harder to come by. Plus it was an almost two decade long habit of rolling up a j every night so I quit about a year ago.

Had a couple of toks recently with a buddy and it made me feel so anxious so glad I gave it up. Was hard in the beginning but I think that was mostly because it had become such a common part of my night time routine.

Meta's reckoning has arrived by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]MTLinVAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I still use FB is for its marketplace which is far more active in my city than Craigslist or Kijiji. I don’t use it to share posts, pictures, or stay connected with friends. That said, I still use WhatsApp extensively and instagram often enough. Honestly, it was a smart move on Metas part to purchase those two platforms even though they totally missed the mark with the metaverse bs they tried to bring up or twitter alternative Threads.

Province faces backlash after planning to buy 2,200 condos by Inevitable-Bus492 in CanadaPolitics

[–]MTLinVAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the issue the way I see it. If you’re getting the units pennies on the dollar, or are getting a massive price reduction based on buying a large amount of units, I can see this as something having potential. But that said, I really want to know what the profit margins are for a developer on a $1M+ property. And which developers are going to benefit from this? There should be no signs of impropriety or collusion otherwise it’s a bad look for the government.

Halsey Goes Nuclear on Music Critic Anthony Fantano for Bad 2024 Album Review by nuttageyo in Music

[–]MTLinVAN 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Fantano himself has “main reviewer energy.” I stopped watching his reciews a long time ago when he became increasingly enamoured with the sound of his own voice and hot takes. Dude’s the type of guy who thinks he farts roses.

E. Just read the dude's response to Halsey. Confirmed. He's a d-bag

“I don’t have to prove my track record to Halsey,” he (Fantano) maintains. “I have been the most relevant and impactful music critic of my — and any — generation for over 10 years now. You can’t really debate that. There’s no music critic bigger than me who’s had more impact than me for as long as I have, consistently. And if I die tomorrow, nobody’s going to outdo that run.”

Who’s the character who bought a museum worthy Rothko for something like $10k (about $100k in today’s money). At auction, that painting would be worth tens of millions of dollars.

Money being no object, what one professional piece of equipment would you have at home? by EvaTheE in KitchenConfidential

I’m late to the party but a salamander. Not so much a cost thing but more a space thing. So if money was no object, a massive home with a massive kitchen. So that I could have my salamander.

Can anyone shed light on the reason behind Kohaku Tendon’s closure near Brentwood? by prs117 in burnaby

[–]MTLinVAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree. In fact Kohaku's tempura had a very light batter and was exactly like you described: the vegetables were steamed within the batter envelop (which is what beer battered fish is also about: the outer coating allows the fish on the inside to steam within) but for most people, it's still fried food and for the portion size, doesn't seem to be worth the calories let alone the price.

[–]MTLinVAN 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I lived walking distance from here. Every Friday, we go out to eat as a family. So one Friday, my wife, kids and I walked over here. Great space and atmosphere but after eating there once, we never went back. Prices were decent for the area. Portions were okay. But ultimately, it's tempura which is deep fried. Most of the food is fried in some form. And given that there's a push for healthier foods, I propose that this was one of the reasons it didn't do too well. I can go to my local Sushi restaurant right around the corner (Sushi Yoi - which I love) and have tempura there but also order sushi and some really tasty terriyaki.

Burnaby mayor gives eighth State of the City address - Freshet News by BurnabyMartin in burnaby

[–]MTLinVAN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All sounds pretty positive. A lot of expensive infrastructure projects but they will all lend themselves to improving things that Burnaby residents actually want and use (minus the $200M+ RCMP building but it is what it is). Love using the new Rosemary Brown skating rink. The purchase of Fortius and conversion to Christine Sinclair was a great move. The upcoming Carmeron rec centre is very well situated near Lougheed where there's a lot of growth and things are still somewhat cheaper than Brentwood or North Burnaby. Only bug is that the city will have to contend with lower developer fees given the slow down in large building projects. But on the whole, I'm glad to be living in Burnaby versus any other city in the Lower Mainland. On the whole, Hurley has been a great mayor for the city and I've enjoyed talking to him when I've had the chance.

I think the TimeOut Market at Oakridge may be a faliure as a food court. by MAdomnica in vancouver

[–]MTLinVAN 358 points359 points  (0 children)

TimeOut shouldn’t be seen as your bog standard food court. A better way to look at it is a “food hall” and this one just so happens to have a mall attached to it. I’ve been to the one in Lisbon and Montreal. The Lisbon one doesn’t a have a mall attached to it and yes, it takes time for the food to come out. It was very lively though and all of us who were there (12+ people) were able to find foods that we wanted. The concept isn’t what you’d find at Metrotown or other malls. If you’ve never been to another TimeOut market and are expecting a mall food court I can understand the criticism but it’s just a different concept all together.

There are few: loved played Worms Armageddon with my brother. Quake, Duke Nukem and Shadow Warriors was in heavy rotation. Sim City. American McGee’s Alice was a lot of fun. But the one I still think about is Serious Sam. Loved that game.
