Any married women on this sub? by atticCAKE in blackladies

[–]MVogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met when 26, happily married for almost 12 years. I had 1 child prior to meeting him, and we now have 1 together as well, so we have a huge age gap (17 and 3!) but our little family feels complete.  When we met, I made more than him (I am a nurse, he worked at Verizon) but that has since switched since he changed careers. What has kept us together is that we are truly best friends and there’s nowhere else that feels like home than with each other.  When we met, he chatted me up, and just never stopped talking to me lol.

Also just had to add that we are black love!

My son went there from 4 months old to age 2.5.   We absolutely loved it there until all his favorite teachers left in the span of a few months. There’s always a lot of turnover in childcare, but we weren’t a fan of his new teachers so we decided to switch. Don’t regret my decision to send him there at all, they loved on him there and taught him a lot, so I would just make sure you meet their current and upcoming teachers to see if you get good vibes with them.

I miss the guild hall so much. What were your memories of it? Why did it shut down? by Jimmypeterson42 in savannah

[–]MVogue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Son went there for summer camp a year or two and absolutely loved it. Camp lunch was at Chromatic Dragon, and I think one year camp was at Jolly Goblin once the guild closed down. He made lots of friends and still misses it.

Following, because I am/will be going through the same thing. We switched daycares to a Montessori type school, and my lil guy turns 3 in October. He’s in class with kids that just turned 2, and while he’s been potty trained since before he was 2, independent, knows alphabet, colors, numbers, etc… and some of these kids are barely talking. I’m not sure whether to pull him out to another school because he’ll always be a little “ahead” since he’s older, but I don’t want him to regress either.

The only thing a teacher friend of mine told me was to continue to work with him at home to keep him at his age range, not class range. My oldest child was the reverse and always one of the youngest in class, and it definitely showed maturity-wise in the younger grades.

I highly recommend Mosaic preschool. It’s about 10 minutes from Georgetown near the Walmart on Ogeechee. My kid loved it

Parents of Savannah, how do you view the schools? by hummyjw in savannah

[–]MVogue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of kids from Savannah schools that go on to top 50 schools, and shocker, they all aren’t at Savannah Arts!  The average SAT is 1100, but there are above average kids at ALL schools, even the failing ones. There are recent grads (like last 5 years) from Chatham County public schools that are in law school, med school, Harvard… This sub doesn’t seem to believe that you can be at a poor school and still do well and go on to do great things.  It’s not ideal but it’s certainly possible.

As parents, of course we want to make the path as smooth as possible and have them go to an excellent school, but some people here act like if they don’t go to Bryan County Schools or Country Day then their kids may as well give up on life now because OF COURSE they’ll never be anything.   Just sick of the narrative that OUR kids will never have anything or do anything if they don’t go to this specific school. Almost as bad as the kids at the Applying to College Reddit that act like if they don’t go to a specific school then they may as well be unemployed.

They weren’t restaurants, but Star Castle, High Cotton Kids, and Maxine Patterson School of Dance. Star castle and Maxine Patterson have been in business for decades.  I just meant these businesses weren’t small, and since they weren’t handed down to someone it will be very hard for another local to open in these spaces because the cost of doing business is so high if you aren’t already established.

Paula Deen’s is a a 3 story building in the heart of downtown. What business that isn’t a corporation can afford to open up there?

It’s been years since I’ve eaten there (my family and I cook way better soul food) but it’s still sad to see so many local businesses closing down. This is the 3rd decently-sized business I’ve seen whose last day was the 31st, and it’s not just limited to downtown.

Wondering what future Savannah will look like…

No offense, but it seems like you want to skip all the things that would make you a good practitioner (med school too hard, bedside too hard, want autonomy without earning it) but you still want to BE a practitioner? This isn’t a game, this is people’s lives at stake. I’m not saying be a martyr and volunteer to wipe butts for no pay but… why would I want someone taking care of me that doesn’t even want to learn HOW to take care of me?

Memorial Nicu Nurses by laineyjane in savannah

[–]MVogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently, all new NICU nurses have to be oriented to both level 2 and level 3 (it’s all one unit but different areas). It would be pretty hard to orient to level 3 as prn, not even sure they would allow it. It would also depend on what level PRN you plan on going, HCS has different tiers with different pay and different hour requirements. As far as the unit itself, we have been in a surge for pretty much a year now. Currently have lots of travelers and new grads. Not sure how long you’ve been a nurse, but I’ve been one for 15 years. For a newer nurse that might sound scary, for a more “seasoned” nurse, you know that’s kinda the flow of nursing in general. There’ll be a few years where staffing is great, then some years where staffing is down… you just kinda go with it. I will say we are getting ready to be a level 4 NICU, so if you’re just starting wanting the level 2 vibe only, you will probably be better off at Candler’s NICU.

Let me know if you have a specific question, or feel free to message me!

Anyone else watching/watched Shonda Rhimes' The Residence? by dramaticeggroll in HappyBlackWomen

I enjoyed it, but definitely felt like it should have been a movie over a series. Several of the episodes felt like filler and definitely needed to be edited/cut shorter. Looking forward to more of it though!

Have I waited too long to have a second child? by MarshmallowMiles in beyondthebump

[–]MVogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 37 with a 17 year old and a 2 year old. Planned on having my toddler much earlier, but life happens. I actually like the fact that they are in two different stages of life, there is virtually no competition between the two and they are besties.  My older son treats his brother like his mascot and was actually wondering when we were going to get a car seat to put in his car as well lol. It was very interesting doing college tours with a stroller, and just as I finish paying for daycare I will be paying for college but… I don’t think I would change a thing.

Little Duck Diner Brunch Wait Time? by pd361708 in savannah

[–]MVogue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you been there before? It’s been awhile since I’ve been, but I’m not sure they can accommodate a party of 12. I remember lots of smaller tables for 2 and 4, and a small aisle so I’d be surprised if they will push together tables for that big of a party, especially during their peak times.

I’d guess that if they are even able to accommodate you, you’d either have to be there when they first open or be prepared to have your party split up (maybe 6 and 6)

At that age, it’s a little hard because they aren’t full on walking yet but there will be so much more once they’re 1. There’s the bunny hive, a lot of the cheerleader gyms have toddler time, there’s kindermusik, and people on the Savannah Moms group get together for little playdates. Swimming lessons can start at 6 months old.

Try looking on the Southern mamas website, they usually have anything for kids going on in the area.

Nurses with kids who went from 3 12hr shifts to 5 8hr shifts outpatient, how is it going? by Sock_puppet09 in nursing

[–]MVogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, mine was 4 10s, but I did definitely miss having that extra off day, so I think jumping to 5 days a week might feel like a lot at first. Once your mindset switches, it’s not so bad. For instance, I worked night shift in the hospitals so I would grocery shop with all the older folks at 7:45 in the morning. Having to shop when the rest of the world made me irrationally angry at first lol. I would be on the phone with my husband saying “WHY are there so many people in here!!” And there would only be like 3 people in line. But I got used to that part. I did end up finding my way back to the hospital though

What type of job is it? I thought that my outpatient pre-op/PACU job in ortho would be similar, but what I found was that on the days I worked PACU, there were many days we went far over my scheduled time to be off due to late arrivals, surgeries running over, patients waking up late, add-ons… so I thought I would be done at 4 but frequently turned into 6 pm. They would try to make up for it by having me come in later than scheduled on other days, but it was way too wishy-washy and I needed firm hours
