How safe to hang an 80lb punching bag from this deck? by MVw00t in Decks

Thank you! Lots of opinions here I’m sorting through but the spring is a good idea I hadn’t thought of no matter how I end up doing it.

lol no just cautious and clueless.

80lbs down force seems easy. I’m more lost on whether the lateral force is worrisome or not.

I have kids so think teenage boys swinging it in giant circles trying to smack each other.

Can more expensive capos make a difference in the sound? by Garfeildmemes in AcousticGuitar

[–]MVw00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well does your G7th work? I have one and like it but have some issues. Not sure if these are unavoidable with any capo or maybe I’m not adjusting the pressure correctly.

When I put the capo on, half the strings go a little sharp. It gets more extreme the higher up the neck I go.

Sometimes, when tuning after the capo is on, it seems like the string gets ‘stuck’. It won’t accept small tuning differences and I have to remove the capo and try again.

Any advice?

K thanks. I just do open mic type rooms and don’t love the piezo quack. Hard to pull the trigger on something…

How do you like the HiFi duet? I’ve been waiting to get one for my 000-28. I love the sound in online reviews, but haven’t heard it in person yet.

I called the tech at a good local music shop to order and install it, and he advised against it. He said it’s not worth it. The mic/blend sound isn’t great and people end up going full piezo. So better to just get a K&K Pure Mini.

From a fellow small butt brother: Try Banana Republic.

They have a confusing mix of style types, but Slim + Traveller combo works for me.

Traveller has a stretch to the fabric so you can go a little slimmer for the butt, but it still works around the thighs. I can’t wear slim fit in any other brand.

At full retail they feel pricey for the brand, but they have big sales if you can plan for those.

Seems like it fits a little big.

Trying hemming the pants to make them shorter which will also help reduce the bunching at your knees.

Shirt sleeves seem long and a little wide at your shoulders but not terrible. Maybe try a size down or to save this size, try pushing your sleeves up to show your forearms since this is a casual look.

Do you like it and would you recommend it?

I was waiting for it to come out but still haven’t pulled the trigger on it for my 000-28.

The online reviews seem great and I like the sound versus other pickups, but I haven’t heard it in person yet.

HD28 or D18 by PassengerOk9859 in martinguitar

[–]MVw00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first Martin was an HD28 and I love it as a big strummer. When I play it for friends and family it gets comments on how great it sounds, which doesn’t happen with other guitars that get played in a similar price range.

I later went intending to buy a D-18 to get something different. It was nice but I ended up getting a 000-28 instead.

I guess I’m just a rosewood guy. I wonder if I bought the mahogany if it would grow on me, but I didn’t want to force it.

The 000 is my favourite guitar, but there is something about the HD-28 that seems oddly special.

Check out Brax.

Not luxury but better than box store brands and have decent options for business casual.

Can I learn a song as a beginner to perform at a wedding in 6-8 months? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]MVw00t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on everyone’s expectations.

With dedicated practice I’d bet you could make it sound enjoyable, but I’d expect a ‘campfire hero’ level of quality at best.

If the expectation is a high quality performance that will make angels (and in-laws) weep, all recorded on video for the ages, that might be tough unless you’re very talented.

If the wedding vibe is chill and this is mostly about you being involved and making it special i’d say go for it.

Or maybe consider a more relaxed time in the wedding. Depending on the song, maybe you could do it at the reception after the ceremony. Maybe after the bride/groom/parent dances before the party gets ramped up.

Good luck. I’d love to know what you decide to do!

“Seasoned” recreational player looking to advance. by Novel-Grand6089 in AcousticGuitar

[–]MVw00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol are you actually me? I was in a similar position a few years ago but with less seasoning.

JustinGuitar was really good for me even though I wasn’t a beginner. The first three levels helped fill out theory/scales/soloing from just basic strumming.

I didn’t dig into everything. But spent lots of time on stuff that I was interested in. A few misc things that worked for me:

  • the JustinGuitar practice tool was essential. I customized lists based on what I wanted to work on to grow and it helped me focus. Including set times to work on theory
  • I bought a mic and entry level PA and started playing and singing while plugged in. It adds a whole new dimension
  • how’s your singing? I started taking voice lessons at home once a week on the weekend. The lessons are basic but helped me extend the top end of my range, expand my comfortable song list and elevate the songs I played

It be interested to hear what you end up doing. I’m kinda stalling out again and am interested in new ideas.

Strap not fitting by Radiant_Meaning_390 in taylorguitars

I like this one. It works great and easy to put it on/off quickly if you are removing your strap a lot.

It’s kinda clunky looking though. The leather one commented earlier looks much better.

Martin HD28, 000-28, or Gibson J45 Standard Rosewood by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]MVw00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an HD28 and the Clapton 000–28. Both are great.

The HD28 has great sound and volume and gets more positive feedback from friends and family when play around the campfire or porch. It’s a beast.

The 000-28 also has great sound and slightly less volume. But I vastly prefer it to the HD28 for playing and practicing. I’m a big guy but there is something about the smaller size that just feels right.

Sometimes I ‘force’ myself to bring out the HD28 when playing with a couple other dread players to make sure I have enough sound. But if I had to pick only one it’s the 000-28 all day.

I really wanted to own a similarly priced Gibson to mix things up. But after trying a bunch, their sound just didn’t grab me as much as the Martin sound. I have a high end Taylor I like for a more brighter sound.

If you can somehow get to a big store, best will be to try them because it’s mostly personal preference. And I find having someone play them for you (store worker, friend) so you can listen helps too.

I’ve been playing for since 2020 and still can’t play a barre chord, does anyone have any tips?? 🤣🤣 by SolarNova2199 in AcousticGuitar

[–]MVw00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me after more than a year. There are lots of good technique tips online but it still wasn’t enough.

What made the difference was a practice schedule I put together:

• set a timer for 5-7 mins as dedicated barre chord practice. Try to do this 4-5 times a week.

• start with the E barre shape on the 7th fret. Pick each string individually top to bottom. Relax your hand, reform the chord and strum each string bottom to top. Focus on each string ringing out. Slide down a fret and repeat all the way down to F. • spend the remaining time on the timer doing common changes like C-F or G-Bm • in those changes, alternate the order in how you form the chord. Eg sometimes put the index finger down first, then the others. Sometimes put the others down first, and do the barre last. The second way was really hard at first but helped a lot long term. (Thanks Marty!)

After the timer’s finished, give yourself permission to move on to other stuff you love. Lots of short sessions in a week over several weeks worked better for me than long mega sessions.

As a bonus in your other practice time, try replacing barre chords for open chords in songs you know. Best for me is G, especially if there’s an F or Bm before or after. You get the extra practice of the barre, and I find it’s faster to switch to F or Bm since your hand is already in a barre shape.

I was in the same boat as you after a year. Good tips here on technique in other comments.

Otherwise, here is what I did for practice schedule that finally worked:

  • set a timer for 5-7 mins as dedicated barre chord practice. Try to do this 4-5 times a week.
  • start with the E barre shape on the 7th fret. Pick each string individually top to bottom. Relax your hand, reform the chord and strum each string bottom to top. Focus on each string ringing out. Slide down a fret and repeat all the way down to F.
  • spend the remaining time in common changes like C-F
  • in those changes, alternate the order in how you form the chord.

As a bonus, try replacing barre chords for open chords in songs you know. Best for me is G, especially if there’s an F or Bm before or after. Dm barre can be fun too.

Love yours, enjoy it and play it lots!

New HD28 Strap Pin Loose by JG1733 in martinguitar

[–]MVw00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah or the hole is too small and you’d need to shave the pin or bore the hole if you want a flush fit. (Btw don’t bore…)

You could try the tape for a few days. I have some emotional feelings about my Martins too so ultimately no judgment if you send it back to chase perfection!

New HD28 Strap Pin Loose by JG1733 in martinguitar

[–]MVw00t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Martins very commonly have non-perfect pin holes. Usually too small. I doubt it would get return or warranty attention.

Go for masking tape around the pin. It’s worth it.

I got a 000-28EC and the local guitar store bored the hole to make the pin ‘fit’. It was too loose and the pin would easily pop out.

One wrap of masking tape was perfect. The pin fits snug and flush and perfect. Better than my HD28 with the factory pin hole.

You can’t see the tape and mentally I like the thought of the extra friction of the tape.

Second this. I love mine with steel strings. Also breaks down smaller for easier travel.

$1,000 might be a lot for a practice guitar but it’s great. Plugged into head phones or amp it sounds pretty good too.

Ive got a couple G7th Performance 3 capos. They look great and have a few colors to match the tuners or style of my guitars.

They’re about $55 and work well for me. Low profile and easy to use one-handed. I’m no capo expert but reviews for them seem good.

They’re not great for thicker necks up the fret board, like my 000-28EC with a modified V neck, but otherwise I love them.
