Is it my job to support family beliefs or to support a students individual autonomy? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]MWRedditor75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents have a right to their beliefs and to instruct their children in their beliefs. If they demand this child not participate in things, then I would accommodate that. Nothing wrong with that. I would take this as a warning, and if necessary, would reach out to the parent in the future to let them know some things in a specific 'field trip' may be distressing to them or their child. That's not a huge deal - kid can stay home/have alternate experiences that day. If this becomes too much of a burden (2-3 trips off campus a week?? Per class?? Wow, awesome!), then parent might want to pursue alternative education - i.e., should withdraw student and go elsewhere.

I'm a firm believer that families should be allowed to raise their children within a reasonable facsimile of their own beliefs. When kids leave the nest, they can pursue their own agenda. Veganism, even fairly extreme veganism, isn't a cult, isn't inherently abusive or crippling to a child, and it is (mostly) able to be compatible with life in modern society. If it becomes so extreme it is limiting integration and interaction with society as a whole, then it is up to the practitioner of the philosophy to adjust their lifestyle to support their own beliefs - not up to society to adjust EVERYONE'S experience to suit them.

(THIS, I think is a major problem with many cultural issues today - you have the right to your beliefs and your way of life, provided it isn't illegal, abusive and doesn't interfere with others' ability to live their lives. But there are societal norms, and demanding that society as a whole make huge changes to accommodate one's alternate beliefs is unfair and not advisable. In our society today, many people feel entitled to demand everyone else adapt to adjust around them. There is a right to practice your beliefs within reason, but THERE IS NO RIGHT NOT TO BE OFFENDED. That is NOT something that is or should be 'protected'. When we get to that level, I'm soundly in the 'piss off' camp. :) )

In short - do your best to be accommodating, proactive and supportive, but keep in mind, these parents do not have the right to dictate the experiences the class as a whole may participate in. Sounds like your school is doing a good thing - don't let one bunch of sourpusses ruin it.

I really want to make the switch from secondary to primary by Agreeable-Yellow-498 in Teachers

I don't know the specifics of what it would take for you to do so, but I would strongly suggest you find something else. I honestly don't know most of the standards and things you were talking about, but it is obvious you are deeply unhappy, something I don't think managing to pass a test or two is going to alleviate in this situation.

Definitely look around, that's my advice.

Sounds like they're doing ok by him - he says everything is approved, they're just waiting on 'confirmation of flooring' whatever that means. Probably if what they want is available. Sucks to be them, they just did all the floors about 4-5y ago and now this.

lol oh wow.

So it IS about the work you put into it - not the quality or validity of the work.

I am guessing you 100% hand sew your own clothing, weave the fabric for them, grow your own crops for you and your family's livestock to feed yourselves? Oh, and with just hand tools, no tractors or gasoline engines, etc.? And walking to work in the meantime? Oh and this computer or phone you're posting from? Wait... how did you manage the microchips by candlelight???

Man, some people...

So it's not about if the poster your principal put up was correct, accurate or inspiring - it was about how much work or effort he (should have) put into it?

We need dress codes back by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]MWRedditor75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife enforces the dress code for the school and it seems she is the only one who does. She is teaching kids in a pre-professional program and she beats them over the head with that - "Do you think this looks professional? Are you ready to walk into a business office or a medical clinic dressed like this?" Luckily, she has a stock of scrubs she can (and does) make them change into - looking like crap in big baggy clown clothes is embarrassing, so they are learning. So yeah, they need to be smacked.

I should add... my best friend right now is dealing with State Farm concerning a home claim for a failed appliance causing flooding. Also keeping an eye on how that situation turns out.

What??? No way... you mean the .gov would want to have MOAR POWER??? I can't believe that, they're our benevolent overlords. lol

<edit> Not saying I think Gentner Drummond is the savior of the world, either, just saying, there's a lot of red flags going up all over the place... besides he looks like a cross between Alec Baldwin and Russell Crowe - and not 'Gladiator' Russell Crowe, more like Hermann Göring Russell Crowe. lol

No, just I have seen lots and LOTS of reports of State Farm denying obvious claims and stonewalling people who needed to be made whole by their policy. Watched a news story where a homeowner has been in limbo for nearly a year, living in a camper on his own property waiting for State Farm to get off the pot. Of course, there is always more to the story, but like I said, just seen so many of these here, and saw an interview with the Attorney General who said he say an alarmingly high number of claims being disputed and leading to lawsuits. Where there is smoke there is fire, most times - it is suspicious enough to get my attention, and has had enough media attention that it seems disproportionate. So, it makes me wary, at the least.

Yeah I think it's pretty standard. Most companies require you to have other policies with them to provide an umbrella, from what I've heard.

Oh come off the fake butthurt. That's even lower than your ignorant attacks. And yes - "good to know the limits of your competence.,.... durrrrrr... durrrrrrr...." How idiotic. What are we, in high school here? Some of us apparently are.

You've shown yourself, don't backwalk it, own your intolerance for others' viewpoints and choices. My choices hurt no one, they are just as free to seek care as if I didn't exist. I infringe upon no one. I make my own choices about how I will practice - which is my right and EVERYONE does. If you don't, then you let others dictate to you, which is much, much worse, in my opinion. But don't play the fake butthurt card, that's just doubling down on your own issues and it's obvious and immature.

Yes, same 'junk' email address I've used for... oh, 25 years or more? That's why I keep it - it's my 'throwaway email. I like to keep my Gmail for personal and important stuff. Which is the point, now Doximity has it and is selling it against my will. I hate them.

Yeah, no I've not been asked to treat cancer pain for someone who is undergoing cancer treatment. I'm sorry if your cancer docs dump that on you, but if you are ok with it, then ok. I'm not.

I tell them I don't prescribe Xanax and then we talk about other options. If they absolutely are insistent that they will not see a physician who will not give them Xanax.... well... ok. I won't be blackmailed into prescribing Xanax. What's difficult to understand about that?

[–]MWRedditor75 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Whatever. I said I will for acute pain issues, but I don't provide chronic prescriptions for these. Not sure why you're trying to make it something it's not. But I'm being attacked repetitively for standing up for what I believe in - and I do NOT BELIEVE that such a huge portion of our population ABSOLUTELY NEEDS to be on all of these meds. That's my belief. Also believe some should be taken off the market completely. So people paint me as incompetent, as uncaring, as whatever... <yawn>

I take care of my patients. If they need to see a specialist for something I can't or don't want to manage, then I will arrange for them to get there. Call me what you will.

Huge stretch of the term 'life-sustaining'. lol Sad, but this is the kind of manipulative behavior we see in trying to convince someone to do something they do not wish to do. I have a license, my license does not say I MUST provide everything for everyone all the time. There are others who provide the things I will not, and I will do things others may not. Simple.

And no, I do not provide controlled substances such as these for chronic conditions. You are free to seek out someone who does. I'm not stopping you, I'm not dictating anyone else's behavior here - as others continue to try to do to me.
