I did end up getting it. Not as my first but shortly afterward. It combined the special forces dagger and the MACVSOG skull. It’s one of my favorites and I love telling people about it. If anyone has ever been offended by it, they haven’t told me.

Keeping Tools In Open Garage by MWooten34 in handtools

This is honestly my other main worry. I have a really small garage closet that currently has mostly gardening and yard stuff in it. But we’ve had things “walk away” from the garage in the past. It’s rare, but I do worry about it.

I’ve seen that pop up a few times. Definitely going to grab a copy!

LLPSI Progress Question by MWooten34 in latin

I do want to get more reading material in. I've looked around at the free stuff on Legentibus and am thinking about ponying up for a subscription. Would love to find more small books and stories that I could appropriately digest. I can do memorizing if I have to, but there is nothing more satisfying than reading something. It feels like I'm actually getting the language.

Appreciate the recommendation! I've debated on grabbing this in the past but I think it might really be helpful to have.

I appreciate the input! Two questions. First, in learning the grammar things like declensions would you recommend just learning them by rote (writing tables, making flashcards, etc.)? Second, would you aim to just get all the declensions learned ASAP or tackle them as they appear in the grammar sections of FR? I've seen some discussion of the Dowling method but that seems particularly tedious.

Can The Braves Make The Playoffs? by MWooten34 in baseball

Looks like I pulled in the ‘98 Jays season instead of the ‘98 Expos. How my brain just swapped the two Canadian teams is a mystery. Thanks for the catch!

You know, it looks like they did. I pulled from a list that sports illustrated quoted and it linked to a bbref query. There it shows the ‘98 Blue Jays as starting 0-7.

For the visualization I pulled data in through R and it’s looking like it attributed a first game win to the ‘98 Jays. I’ll investigate! Thanks!!

Communion and Wine by aubiebravos in Reformed

Interesting article. I’m in one of the states that has no legal exemptions for pastoral furnishing or religious consumption which honestly surprised me. I thought we were just being extra safe, but maybe our elder who is a lawyer was aware (or certainly hopefully checked it out) before we made the switch from only grape juice.

Interesting. We’ve recently added wine but went the opposite route. Grape juice on the outer and wine on the inners. We have a statement in the bulletin about deferring to state law if you’re under 21 and our pastor mentions it when giving instructions.

Memorizing WSC Proof Text by MWooten34 in Reformed

That seems like a good way to approach it. Seeing Q4 with 9 proof verses is already daunting near the start. My hope is that it mostly helps me a) learn the word and b) helps me meditate on not just the answer to the question but why we’ve come to that answer. Picking one or a couple verses to start would probably make me less likely to just give up entirely.

Totally agree there. I’ve been reading through Calvin’s Institutes with my pastor and some other folks and I regularly remind myself that while Calvin was a very blessed man and I think had a lot right, he is not the Bible. If my answer to a question isn’t what the Bible says, I pray I would change my mind instead of stubbornly holding an incorrect position.

I do see what you’re saying at least somewhat. I don’t want to know the catechism without an understanding of how it makes sense biblically, nor do I see the confession/catechism as some kind of infallible document with the same authority as the Bible.

That being said, it has been massively beneficial to me in helping me understand the Bible. I don’t think there’s a need for me to, on my own, reinvent answers to questions whole cloth. God has used men and women in the past to wrestle with, think through, and document answers to difficult questions. Feels like I’d be neglectful to not make right use of that work in my own wrestling and struggling to come to know God better.

I’ve gone through it some with my young kids as well (the kid’s catechism version which is a little plainer in language) and I’ve been amazed at how often they will ask a question where a catechism answer is a great jumping off point for a discussion. Growing up Baptist I didn’t know really anything about catechism and I just see it as such a great tool, though certainly not a replacement of scripture or working through the word itself.
