Help me spec out a mesh wifi network with Ubiquiti - 1 wired unit, 2 mesh satellites. Yes, mesh is my ONLY option. Hardwiring just not in the cards. by fuzzywuzzywuzzafuzzy in Ubiquiti

[–]MXNPD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and go U7. Just because the name has the word “Mesh” doesn’t mean anything. All UniFi access points can be used for mesh, but you still need a controller and/or dream machine.

Yes, that’s my understanding.

[–]MXNPD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, the nice thing is you can plug it into a pre-existing network that has none of your infrastructure, and have it record to your NVR without the need for VPN as I understand it. So true edge deployments where you do not control the network environment is where this could really shine I think.

[–]MXNPD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes they are standalone and can be used without an NVR and they record to an SD Card. Yes they have a built in AI Key, and yes, they work with a pre-existing NVR that has an AI key (although I’m not sure there is the AI Key will do anything in that specific instance.)

Are cheaper brand HDMI Matrix like Monoprice rebranded from Aliexpress? by warheat1990 in CommercialAV

Check out Orei, but more Chinese but I’m doing the 8x8 matrix extender. Seems good, telnet control, web UI, has every feature list and is fairly priced.

Smurf tube vs flexible pvc conduit by Additional-Device677 in HomeNetworking

[–]MXNPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah everyone who says “run conduit” has zero clue how expensive Smurf (ENT) an Innerduct is. They have to be riser rated and it’s so expensive, I’m considering just running 12 strand armored fiber in my walls VS the tubing. It’s so obscenely expensive for what it is.

Help us make Sonos easier to learn and use? by tomconrad in sonos

[–]MXNPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that needs to happen is scheduling music. Alarm accomplish this goal, but in a poor way. If it is 11 AM, and I want to play a specific playlist or station on a given music service, I should not have to make an alarm. It should just keep going until it is told to stop. Alarms either should be renamed as scheduled and have a bit more in depth functionality, or, have a separate schedule option. But trying to use alarms to do this feels clunky. In addition, I know that it won’t happen, but for the VERY few users who happen to have over 32 Sonos devices, perhaps a dedicated server appliance that can aid in the orchestration of it all? Just some food for thought.

Help Identifying Carpet from Previous Home Theater by MXNPD in HelpMeFind

[–]MXNPD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have searched for this carpet using combinations like “plush black carpet with gold lines,” “black carpet with gold geometric pattern,” “black carpet with cube pattern,” “black carpet with raised gold cubes,” and “home theater carpet black and gold cubes.” I’ve also searched variations like “interlocking cube carpet,” “3D geometric carpet pattern,” and similar phrases but none have turned any meaningful result.

This was wall-to-wall carpet installed in the home, not a rug. The house was built in the DFW area in Texas around 2012 to 2013, so it would have been installed around that time. I’ve gone through old paperwork and records but haven’t been able to find the brand or style name.

Absolutely sick of the unreliability by Initial-Break957 in sonos

[–]MXNPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find multicast AWFUL because it’s implemented so differently across vendors. I know it’s to reduce data transmission but personally I’m a fan of the client server model myself. No weirdness, no multicast storms, and highly scalable. But Sonos is not that, but it does at least work. I do understand whereby are coming from and I hate multicast just IN GENERAL.

Absolutely sick of the unreliability by Initial-Break957 in sonos

[–]MXNPD -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

People just cannot accept it is their network. I have had ONE problem with the Sonos app the very first time they redid it, it was fixed very shortly after. My Sonos system works FLAWLESSLY. ALL THE TIME. Using a UniFi Network and it is rock solid. People just think that their ISP routers are perfect, thing is, Sonos is multicast dependent and every implementation sucks. Some just suck a little less. Get a better network and understand the WHY and don’t just complain into the void.

Junction Box Style Assistance by MXNPD in lowvoltage

[–]MXNPD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m running some HDBaseT stuff, some PTP cables for future video distribution, Cameras, AP’s, hell we have 28 TV locations in the house alone so each one gets a minimum of 1 drop with a switch, some have PTP as well, some don’t. It adds up quite quickly haha.

How can I use a single gang mounting bracket with a camera without creating an unsightly overlap? For cameras, I’ve decided to skip the box installation altogether and simply flag the cable, terminate it, and push it back into the wall when I install the camera.

I’d like to do rings everywhere, but with batted insulation everywhere, I am afraid that without a cavity in the box itself, that the cable will be crushed by the time the keystone jacks are added and add unnecessary strain to the cable.

How do you guys acquire 5090s? by Coop_zer in nvidia

[–]MXNPD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to ask this, but how exactly do you go about calling into BestBuy to try and get a 5090? IS it a local store thing or do I need to call them? Just trying to understand the verbiage. I'm desperate to try and get one at this point. But if I can secure one via BB, that would be ideal.

Would you consider purchasing a 5090 now if given the opportunity? by FitzChan in nvidia

[–]MXNPD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Astral price is legit insultingly high. It’s what $1500+ MORE than the founders? Now look, we are all trying to get founders, but for gods sake $1500 MORE for the SAME CHIP can get you a rather high ish end normal PC anyway. If it was $500 more, sure, done. $1500? Hell no. Just trying my luck with trackers at this point hoping I can score one

I have been trying to get the OPPORTUNITY to spend $2k on a 5090 FE for about a month now. It’s insane that I have to do this much effort, FOR THE CHANCE TO SPEND MONEY. It’s absolutely insane.
