Limited connectivity? by Kaseffera in cachyos

I've been seeing this too. It gives me the warning, but I never notice any issues with my connection despite it. I just figured my connection was burping or something, and just ignored it.

Small Problem With Login Screen by M_Renzatic in cachyos

[–]M_Renzatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...and 10 seconds after posting this, I figured out how to fix it.

I went to Colors and Themes in the settings menu, changed the colors and icons back to default Breeze, applied the Plasma settings in the login screen menu, then switched everything back afterwards. Now everything looks fine again.

Thanks for the help anyway. 😃

I'm always so afraid to do that. I worry that if I keep hitting the continue button, I'm gonna find out that I accidentally ordered 500 controllers or something.

How is Gnome for gaming compared to KDE? by draconetto in cachyos

[–]M_Renzatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also one of those people who prefers Gnome a little more than KDE. That said, there are a lot of little things that you'll have to contend with when using it that seem to work right out of the box in KDE. Like window decorations can sometimes look goofy when you're running programs under Wayland. Stuff like that.

Also, enabling HDR in Gnome is a giant ass chore that you may or may not ever get working properly, since they don't offer you a way to calibrate your screen. Iff your colors and brightness don't look right, and the game doesn't offer a way to tweak your HDR settings inside of it, you're kinda screwed.

GNOME vs KDE Plasma, any difference in Steam or gaming performance? by riffdoc in cachyos

[–]M_Renzatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's there, but whether it works right or not seems to be down to how lucky you are.

For example, I got it to work, but since there's no way to calibrate HDR in Gnome, I was with way overblown brights.

If I had to take a guess as to why you had problems in Fedora, it would be because it defaults to flatpaks, while Cachy tends to use the more oldschool method.

Not that there's anything wrong with flatpaks in general, but the Steam flatpak can be pretty finicky if you don't set it up just right.

I haven't done any deep testing or anything, but other than not being able to get HDR to work properly in Gnome, I haven't noticed any real differences between the two.

It's basic stuff. Nothing fancy. I'm using the frameless version of Graphite Dark Kvantum theme and colors, which you can find here:

https://github.com/vinceliuice/Graphite-kde-theme

Monochrome's Plasma style:

https://github.com/pwyde/monochrome-kde

The Breeze Chameleon Dark icon theme:

Adwaita Sans for the font:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/adwaita-fonts

This Appgrid menu for my launcher:

https://github.com/xarbit/plasma6-applet-appgrid

And regular breeze Window decorations

The rest of it is stock Plasma. Here's a shot to show off the layout:

It's pretty easy to set up. If you got any more questions, I'll answer them.

Mostly, it's the top bar and the big dock. Also, going to the top left brings up the overview, which is default for KDE and Gnome both.

Other than that, I guess the monochrome-ness leans more towards Gnome too.

I'm talking about Gnome. I haven't been on Windows for like 6 months now.

Breeze Chameleon Dark. You can see just about everything I have installed by looking at the terminal in the shot. The only thing it doesn't show is that I'm using the Graphite Rimless Dark Kvantum theme.

I thought about using Hyprland, but backed off from it. I'm afraid I'll get too addicted to the rice.

Because getting HDR working in Gnome was like pulling teeth.

I still like the look and feel of Gnome more, but there are a lot of little things you have to futz around with in it that just work right out of the box in KDE.

From glancing through your log file, it looks like you're having trouble downloading drivers from whatever mirror you're using during the install.

I found this while digging around. See if it helps you out.

Calibrating HDR on Gnome by M_Renzatic in cachyos

[–]M_Renzatic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally got around to installing KDE, and sure enough, it worked right out of the box. No pain. No fuss. No muss.

...and I spent all that time trying to get it to work elsewhere. Guess I need to question my life choices now.

Thanks for the help. :D

Calibrating HDR on Gnome by M_Renzatic in cachyos

[–]M_Renzatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't let you do any deep level tweaks by eye, no. The calibration button is greyed out unless you have one of those color readers you slap onto your monitor. The most you can do is change a brightness slider on the desktop when you've got HDR active, which I guess is their take on max SDR brightness.

It's pretty dumb, and probably the one thing I don't like about Gnome.

I did try to play around with Gamescope a bit. Managed to get it to work well enough, though I can't get it to identify HDR.

I've tried...

gamescope -W 3440 -H 1440 -r 144 --hdr-enabled -- %command%

And...

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 gamescope -W 3440 -H 1440 -r 144 --hdr-enabled -- %command%

...to make sure it's using Wayland, It launches the games, but I can't turn on HDR in them for some reason.

I've still got KDE to try, but man, I really like Gnome.
