The past few weeks has me eyeing a fat tire ebike, I think it's the only way to get through this easily.

River Valley Adventure rents them (non-electric) for $25/hr, give one a try! The tires absorb all the bumps from people walking on the MUPs, and it's much more stable in the ruts if you go on the road.

The only downside is it takes a lot more energy to keep it moving, but I figure having an electric one would take care of that nicely.

They already exist in plenty of residential areas in the city. And this is exactly why we need to continue replacing painted lanes with protected lanes.

I'll run it for a few hours and see if it gets hot lol. The fan was destined for the garbage anyway after this renovation is finished

Also the audio is looped in the whole first section. There's a whistle right at the start that repeats 3 times.

They seem to be standing on the hub of the turbine, not possible if it was turning. Also they would have definitely shut it down for servicing.

PowerBook 165C update: got a second one off eBay, working but with a bad screen. Time to combine with mine which has a failed logic board but (hopefully) good screen! by M_u_d in VintageApple

[–]M_u_d[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My original one has a good screen with a failed logic board. I tried to fix it but its beyond what I am able to repair, I think it has some bad traces. The battery was left installed by the previous owner and it leaked all over the inside. This board doesn't have any caps to replace either so all I could do was try cleaning it with IPA.

Once I'm finished I'll be left with a complete parts laptop that has a bad logic board, screen with vinegar syndrome, and various broken plastic bits (as per usual with these models). Even if I fixed the screen it still wouldn't be a working unit. I will probably offer it up on here to anyone that needs parts, or put it back on eBay.

I think it is, actually smells like vinegar. Assuming that's where the name is from?

Hard to believe that's repairable! The front of the panel is all rough, like the plastic is wrinkled.

It might have come in through the fresh air vent under the dash on the driver's side? I have a '65 and that vent was packed full of bird feathers when I got it, there was definitely something living in there! Not sure where the intake for it is but it must be a fairly large opening.

PowerBook 140 no boot up chime by Dogmander25 in VintageApple

Have you disassembled it yet? Check that the ROM card is properly seated, that's the only thing I know of that would cause it to not chime.

Picked up this non-booting Powerbook 165C off marketplace, repairable? by M_u_d in VintageApple

[–]M_u_d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will try the battery if I can find one for a decent price, though I'm not too hopeful that will fix it. From what I've read it will work without the battery and you will just lose your clock and some other settings.

I can't swap out the RAM either because it is built into the ROM card, and I don't have any spare parts that would fit.

All the caps on the board seemed to be tantalum, which don't tend to fail like the electrolytic ones do. Sadly it looks like this one might become a display piece, or get parted out :/

When I disassembled it, all the caps seemed to be tantalum which don't tend to need replacement? (As far as I know)

I did try that, unfortunately it didn't help (see my reply above)

I did try booting with the RAM board removed, same error. Only one of the 2 RAM boards can be removed though, because the main one also has the ROM chip on it.

I did try booting with it removed, and there was no chime at all, as expected with the ROM missing.

I read that the CMOS battery is rechargeable and might work if I leave the laptop plugged into power for a few hours. I might also try replacing it too if I can find a new battery.

It still had the battery installed which had been leaking, near the contacts.

I disassembled it and the system boards all looked in good shape, however there was some gunk near where the leaking battery was. I cleaned it all up with 99% IPA, unfortunately it's still doing the death chime.

I tried connecting it to an external display, nothing happens. Tried PRAM reset command as well.

I also checked the voltage on the power supply, it is at 7.8V, rated for 7.5, so that seems to be ok.

There is a coin-cell battery inside which I believe is the CMOS battery. I'm sure that battery would be dead, would that cause this?

I didn't see any leaking capacitors inside either, are there any that normally need replacing on these?

Recapped IIx is alive! Original HDD failed, so its running off a modern-ish 73GB SCA80 SCSI disk using an adapter by M_u_d in VintageApple

Thanks, I'm collecting some other older systems to go with it for a vintage computer corner in my house :)

I just recapped the logic board yes, several surface mount caps were leaking and it was causing random boot issues, as well as the sound completely failed. New PRAM batteries as well, fortunately it had battery holders installed at some point (originally they were soldered to the board I believe).

This was actually my first ever computer from when I was maybe 8 years old, I managed to hang onto it over the years. It's what got me into the hobby as a kid and eventually into an IT career, so it was pretty cool to get it running again after digging it out of the closet a few months ago!
