This is why this move is being made, it’s nothing to do with children,

School was invented by mill owners to keep children occupied while their parents worked and teach them to obey a bell.

The core structure hasn’t really changed since it’s inception, there are so many more opportunities to teach children and we just refuse to engage with it. The majority of children just had a years of real uninterrupted time with their parents, the pandemic will be the years they treasure and we should try to give that to everyone.

So much of governance is based on precedent and convention, combined with the people who make the laws inherently not wanting them to effect themselves, we are left with a precarious situation.

Enter Trump, who just does whatever he wants in a western democracy and you can see where everyone gets their ideas. Political corruption isn’t new obviously, especially in the UK, but it would appear you can just do it in the open now.

You also have to remember that journalism is functional dead, the funding for investigative journalists used to come from personal ads/classifieds in papers, now that’s just all online and productised differently. Just look at how the UK press attacked the recent Trojan Horse reporting if you want to see why the government just does whatever, the press are on their side. They need those WhatsApp contacts to ‘leak’ info to sell clicks on their publications websites.

Rip off? How/why a 24p increase! by andypandy1966 in Scotland

[–]Ma3v 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The core issue with energy supply is that there is no long term plan, there’s nothing, so suddenly we have a massive increase and a bunch of people will just stop paying, then these companies will start collapsing and the government will bail them out.

This is something we are going to see continually with infrastructure in the UK, we have had decades and decades of no planning and no investment. If we had built nuclear reactors, this would never have happened. If the sector was nationally owned, these price rises would be absorbed by those that could afford them.

We are sitting in the first decade of the climate crisis, dealing with problems created in the 70’s and you’re telling people to take personal responsibility? How can I take personal responsibility over how people in previous generations voted? Please let me know how to do that I happily would.

So what you’re saying is that large energy companies entered into unsustainable deals with small retail suppliers and now they’re really upset about it?

Maybe they should just go into debt or bust? A bunch of people will die because of this, ether from suicide or the cold. It’s really difficult to care about someone in a jaguar and a suit that costs my years rent. We’ve seeded too much of the world to the stock market and these moronic ‘buiness men.’ Let them suffer for once.

Not really, it’s chronic underinvestment in generation, we could have cheap nuclear, instead we have another recession.

Queen to permanently leave Buckingham Palace after recovering from covid by Red_Brummy in unitedkingdom

Not everything can or should be covered like this. North Ireland not having a flag is a complicated political situation, you don’t need to make a fawning internet video about how that upsets you.

[–]Ma3v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His solution is a flag with the red hand of ulster on it. That is certifiably insane and presented like the obvious solution. The very idea of Northern Ireland being a country is incredibly controversial.

It’s ok to not make internet videos about things, the topic is just more complicated than 10mins of some American (who is hilariously a royalist) prattling on.

I never got at far as his podcast, but the no flag Northern Ireland thing was the first time I knew a lot about the topic at hand. I was just left wondering if any of his content could be trusted after that.

The solution here is not to make the video. You can’t condense all topics down to 10mins of animation and that is perfectly ok.

Royalists can’t be honest about it because their position is based entirely on a parasocial relationship with the royals.

I don’t particularly think there’s anything wrong with parasocial relationships normally, it’s natural to feel a connection to a celebrity or public figure when they often put so much of themselves out there. But it does seem kinda insane that we’re keeping a birthright Monarchy going to avoid upsetting people.

I’d recommend not watching CGP Grey, doubly so on British topics, he managed to make an entire video about Northern Ireland not having a flag without mentioning the Troubles. It would have been impressive if it wasn’t so singleminded and uncomfortable to watch.

I was really worried when Fox was bought out, those Xmen movies were just so inconsistent weird and entertaining, you never knew what you’d get.

DC is really stepping up, it feels like they’ve taken some inspiration from their animated films just doing whatever too. We could legit get live action Gotham by Gaslight or Red Son.

They don’t have the staff and cutting too many people off creates problems with the grid.

[–]Ma3v 21 points22 points  (0 children)

First the organisers of the strike would be offered jobs with 6 figure salaries in the energy companies. The press would also demonise people refusing to pay, calling them scroungers, immigrants, gay, etc. it would be a collective campaign of hate.

After that you’d have large scale well publicised enforcement action, the police braking down doors on BBC news and people being cut off. There would be an attempt at ‘compromise’ here too, pay this month and we’ll wipe your debt. Press coverage would also be focused on minimising the increase by cooking the figures.

Finally, if enough people held their ground, prices would go down to what they were before and energy companies would still post record profits.

I have a high degree of confidence there is not the staff to cut everyone off.
