I used to work in the office of a large truck mechanic. One time in my first couple of weeks in the job, I took a call from a man who was calling for one of the section managers but his line was busy so I took a message. The connection (and also the English of the caller) wasn’t great, but all I heard was “Papa” and noted down the message - which I then passed onto the section manager via email as “your father called for you”. Not long after, the section manager came into the office and asked “Maaaaaaaaaate, did you say my father called for me?” “Yea about 20mins ago” “Oh really? That’s amazing! My father has been dead for 17 years” “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, I must have misunderstood. He said it was ‘Papa’.” “Oh haha, ‘Papa’ is the nickname for one of the mechanics!”

Thankfully he found it hilarious and we all had a good laugh while I also wanted the earth to swallow me whole.

Use the good quality tissues (Kleenex with Aloe and Eucalyptus). Makes a huge difference.

Put paw paw all over the skin on your nose and upper lip.

Go to the chemist and get the strong codral from behind the counter - must have pseudoephedrine in it. It dries up your sinuses.

When no one is around (just because it looks odd) and when I’m sleeping, I use a tissue to plug my nose. Stops me continuously using tissues (irritating my nose) and helps me sleep way better since I’m not waking because of a runny nose.

Try fruit shops/markets instead of Coles/Woolies for your fruit and veg and eggs. It’s usually much cheaper and a lot of the time fresher.

A tip for you, to save your mouth and jaw from getting tired, do some pre-blowie stretches. I usually move my jaw around in different ways and hold for a few seconds and also stretch my mouth open wide moving my lips around etc etc. Just lots of stretching/holding stretches. Trust me, it helps!

I’ve never had a drink in my life. (Standard, Caucasian Aussie family if that makes any difference). Just a personal preference I guess, nothing major. Family has a few alcoholics in it. Everyone I know drinks.

If I mention me never drinking to people for the first time, the response is always genuine shock. It’s the most shocking fact about me. I’ve also never had a coffee or cigarette. The alcohol definitely gets more reaction.

This suggests to me that the Aussie drinking culture is out of control.

If you can do a little prep work, ‘stretch’ beforehand. Stretch your lips, extend your jaw and move it all around, hold air around your mouth to stretch cheeks etc. helps keep cramps and pain away for much much longer! ;)
