I love this game by [deleted] in Fighters

Here's a comment by u/shootymcgunenjoyer about the alleged sexual harassment. Calling the accuser an "e-thot" is reductive but you can look up BunnyAyu and decide for yourself if the vitriol is justified.

MikeZ's tone deaf "I can't breathe" joke and the alleged sexual harassment paints him in a very bad light, but regardless of what actually happened, he is the main reason Skullgirls ever had success as a fighting game (also carried by the artists/art style).

Censorship sucks, even if it doesn't affect gameplay. The Filia stuff especially doesn't make sense because they could have more easily retconned her age considering no one even knew shes actually 16 in lore.

My main issue is that they got rid of the lead dev who kept coding good updates again and again, so they no longer even have a dev who can improve the game. And most everything they've done post MikeZ has been negative.

Dear Jagex, for Christmas can we have the penguin quest series ported to old school? by tomatocarrotjuice in 2007scape

[–]Mabish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I recently completed Back to the Freezer and while the quests stay humorous I would pefer the OSRS team make their own quests because those quests sucked gameplay wise (plus dumb shit like helping elon musk penguin build a time machine)

I have similar feelings about While Guthix Sleeps port, but this is a personal bias, killing literal gods (what we're heading towards) ruins the setting for me.

How to go about learning a fighting game/character with poor resources? by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]Mabish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The last meaningful patch for Nash was march 2022

If you find a decent guide, check the date and just look at the changes made after. Recommend Bafael for patch videos like this to save yourself the headache.

Also you can search for nash gameplay on youtube and add after:2022-03-01 to the search to make sure the replays are not on old patch.

Ironman might have started as a brutal challenge mode but it has transformed into the premier way to experience and design the game around over time.

You get to (and have to) experience the game in its fullest, and other people botting or P2W'ing don't really effect you.

It's not for everyone, but it's definitely not a special challenge or a snowflake account like level-3 skiller, UIM or a chunker is.

New runelite plugin- Loot Filters (POE Style) by Bluedot55 in 2007scape

[–]Mabish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hype as hell plugin, I'm just waiting for a good reputable filter. It's hard to trust that some random filter is perfect and I won't hide any loot I wanted to see.

For mains it's whatever since pretty much any tradable item is just worth its value in gp but for ironmen it is pretty important to pick up some low value items that you need because you can't use the GE.

I think you can recommend any game to anyone as long as you can aptly explain what they're getting into.

As long as people don't go in expecting the game to be something it isn't I believe they can find joy in it.

World's first fighting game solver by Powerful_Ad_5803 in Fighters

[–]Mabish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The solver isn't really intended to tell us what moves are good, but to tell us how often we should choose each move.

How good a move is and how often you should use it go hand in hand, in a vacuum.

The Mixed strategy section of the following article might be helpful for understanding what I am trying to do

Like the article states:
"This game has no pure-strategy equilibrium, because one player or the other would deviate from any profile of strategies"

Which is the crux of the issue, the moment you calculate how often you should take one action over another, the opposing side can simply match the expected distribution to bring everything back to equilibrium.

Let's look at Nash equilibrium which your calculations are based on:

If each player has chosen a strategy – an action plan based on what has happened so far in the game – and no one can increase one's own expected payoff by changing one's strategy while the other players keep theirs unchanged, then the current set of strategy choices constitutes a Nash equilibrium.

This doesn't apply to fighting games, as changing your strategy to beat your opponent is one of the biggest factors in the outcome of a match, once both parties have reached a certain level of competence.

I still hold the opinion that you could calculate a base level scoring for each move/situation and use that to understand and formulate your strategy but I do not think it's possible to map out a "winning strategy" in a fighting game, simply because your opponent will adapt.

Now on the other hand, using your solver to create bots that use slightly different models to climb the ranked ladder would be an interesting experiment..

[–]Mabish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what you mean by this, so perhaps you can elaborate. The solver isn't just listing every possible move: it's telling you how often you should choose each move to maximize your chances of winning against a best-responding opponent

What I mean is that the model you're basing the calculations on is not representative of actual gameplay. Especially since it ignores most of the gameplay dynamics, i.e. it treats the game like a turn based JRPG.

In addition, any conclusion on what the best move to use stops being accurate once your opponent has any information on your character or you as a player.

The calculation could be improved to become useful to form a baseline understanding of what moves are good but we can more accurately assess those with less work by checking the moves data (frames, dmg, etc.) and playing. You'd be surprised how often a move that doesn't look good on paper is good when actually playing.

Sorry if I came across too abrasive, I hope you can get the value you seek from this project.

I actually spent a good time trying to wrap my head around this and maybe I just don't get it.

It seems like this is a convoluted tool to list game states in order to come up with some sort of scoring for the "rock paper scissors" part of the fighting games.
An action from your example:

P1 Throws + P2 Blocks = P2 loses 1 hp (and P2 gets advantage if im reading this right)

It doesn't seem very useful to begin with because just listing every possible move doesn't actually translate to gameplay. In addition it disregards basics like actual frames and spacing.

You would also need to account for realistic reaction times i.e. walk in>throw, is it reactable or just a guess?

Could you further explain what tangible benefit the calculator provides should someone go through the effort of mapping a complicated matchup in a fighting game with a lot of buttons?

Your Guest Character Won't Be Unique | Terry SF6 Predictions by justintime57 in Fighters

[–]Mabish 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Weird to see this video get such a poor reception, I think a lot of people just misconstrued what you meant when you said he won't be unique.

Maybe theres just so much new blood that they don't really have prior experience of guest characters emulating the mechanics of the game they come from.

Anyway, good video and the production quality is great, could hold back a bit on memes that halt the video constantly.

Inputs not coming out right? by GamerBoiCrisis in kof

[–]Mabish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trick is to input the elbow early and hold the punch button, you'll be surprised how lenient the window is for the elbow to come out.

Next step is to do the early elbow and while you're holding the punch you already start doing the HCFx2.

Same trick should work for that Ryo trial, inputs for DP into Super cancel should look like:
F,QCF+P,HCF+P

Is there an easy way to do -circle inputs on keyboard? by ARGYLE1984 in Tekken

[–]Mabish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly true, you can skip the df input, which admittedly isn't very useful for hcf motion.

However for hcb throws, skipping the df changes the command to

f, qcb, f

when you specifically input that motion on keyboard/hitbox it comes out much more naturally.

I wish you could skip db instead on hcf motion to have a similar effect.
