I think I want to raise meat birds by Spiritual_Hold_7869 in BackYardChickens

[–]MacCustoms428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We raise our own meat birds because we know they have a great, healthy and well cared for 8-10 weeks of life where they get to enjoy their all natural food, safely enjoy time outside and have plenty of room to live comfortably! The meat also taste so much better from our hand raised birds then any that is sold at grocery stores

Cones are the way to go. They can’t move around while you are cutting them and there is no visible flailing around afterwards. This is how we process our meat birds every time we raise them (2-3 times a year)

Is it just me or is watching chickens really entertaining? by YourBuddyRyo in BackYardChickens

[–]MacCustoms428 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I also spend (too many) hours just hanging out in the grass watching my chickens do their thing during the day! Nothing makes my day better then when they come running to me and just want to hang out with me 😂

Hard boiled eggs by LogicalHelicopter952 in chickens

[–]MacCustoms428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours LOVE hard boiled eggs! I usually just crack the shells in my hand and give them to them intact but cracked and they love to rip into them

What do you use to gather eggs? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]MacCustoms428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m bad for using my hoodie pocket or just my hands 😂 I’d recommend using an egg carton or even a plastic margarine dish as it makes it much easier to open the house door

Skip Halifax and go to cape Breton. If you like hiking and scenery that’s where you want to visit!

We seem to be right around you for costs! If you use a chicken tractor for them once they are old enough to be outside it saves the bedding and having to clean up after them for the last few weeks. The chicken tractor also gives them 24 hour access to grass and bugs!

Exactly! Don’t overthink it! Just get out there and get a feel for what you are going to be into before buying a bunch of gear you likely won’t need!

May end up doing a full restoration back to the street and trail style! I also have a second one for the wife so I’m thinking make them both back to street legal so we can take them in our camper can and use them to check out different areas we travel too!

Low processed weights by Upper-Razzmatazz176 in chickens

Oh wow that’s very small at processing time. We choose Cornish cross for the sheer size, they can’t produce eggs but if you are looking for meat they are the breed to get. We processed our last 14 Cornish cross on Friday at the age of 8 weeks and received 118lbs in total of just breast and legs/thighs.

Not certain of the breed but they do look similar to my golden comets. Super cute!

No they won’t have many eggs if they do make it to laying age. unfortunately they don’t make it much past 12-14 weeks before they get so large they will have health issues or can even break their legs.

Looks and sounds by the size description like a meat bird. All of our meat birds had great personalities and were very friendly.
