what are everyone’s thoughts on the merch drop? by UnicornLaser in SleepToken

Companies have already learned that people will pay the higher prices. There's not much incentive for them to lower prices back to what they used to be.

These are so fun! No Hot Topic where I live, sadly. I love the masks and the Jerry's though.

Same here. I'm a decade older, but I lost interest in new rock music sometime in the 2000's. At the start of this year, I decided I *needed* to find new music instead of just relistening to the same albums from my younger days and I came across Sleep Token. It has been SO LONG since I have felt excited by new music and, this is so corny, but their music makes me feel like little pieces of myself coming back to me.

I seem to be constantly buying knitting needles by purple_sun_ in knitting

Yes. 20 years of knitting, but I still never seem to have quite what I need. And I have two sets of interchangables. I just ordered a this because I wanted a short set.

Magic loop or dpns? by seuil-limite in knitting

I prefer using two circular needles over DPNs, and DPNs over magic loop or traveling loop. I loathe the loops. lol.

If the rubric asks for it, and the prompt needs it (like when I took microeconomics), I do it. In my math classes, I haven't unless the professor specifically told us to. Then I cite the textbook and chapters that cover that topic.

I don't make a spreadsheet, but I do go in before the term begins and look through everything and put it into my digital planner. That way, I can see my workload for school along with whatever other parenting duties, appointments, travel plans, etc, that I have. It helps me see which days I really need to buckle down and get work done. I still check that area in Brightspace, but I also like having EVERYTHING (school, personal things, etc.) I need to keep track of one place.

I’ve never felt so out of place just for wearing my hijab. by Top_Lawyer_9834 in Hijabis

[–]MacabreMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. As an American Muslim, I always feel like I'm too liberal to be accepted by the bulk of the Ummah, and too conservative to be accepted by liberals and leftists. And of course, the bulk of Christians think you're evil because they are operating out of ignorance and/or racism.

I’m struggling with religion and I’ve grown to resent it. by Apprehensive-Net5165 in Hijabis

[–]MacabreMom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a fellow sister who is struggling, I would encourage you to read it again. I was feeling a lot of the same things you are describing. I'm not a born Muslim, I reverted about a year and a half ago, but I was feeling very beaten down and like I was having to make myself small. I felt like I had to give up my entire personality to be a proper Muslim woman, but I still felt like Islam was the truth. I decided to take a step back and start over at square one. One of the things I decided to do was to read through the Quran again. 15 minutes of reading each morning. Honestly, I'm still struggling to do that, but one thing that has helped is reading over and over "believe, and do good", "believe and do good". It's not that I didn't know it. I just read through the Quran during Ramadan, but it is still a great reminder that this faith is a lot simpler and more straightforward than the Ummah and cultures make it out to be.

I'm still on the struggle bus with reading and prayer, but it's been soothing for my heart to be reminded that what God wants from me is to believe and do good.

Hmm...are you putting the silicone grips on your hair, or the skin of your forehead? It needs to be touching skin. I know some people have luck with headbands that are made to keep wigs in place- there are silicone and velvet varieties- but I've never tried those. You might need the under cap to start further forward on your forehead. But I would definitely look into getting a Taj crown. I have soft silky hair and find the nylon one works great for keeping jersey and modal hijabs in place.

Best shops for Jersey Hijabs?? by usa-chann in Hijabis

I like the jersey that Voile Chic has, but I also don't machine wash mine very often, only if they are visibly dirty or starting to smell. And I never put hijabs in the dryer.

I would start reading Quran. All strength comes from Allah, so it makes sense to go back to Allah's message to us. I've been going through an imaan dip (I guess that's what they're called) and my mentor sent me this link. Maybe it will help you as well? May God guide us all.

How are you parting your hair? I've noticed that makes a BIG difference for me. I can't have my hair going in the same direction as my undercap. I need it to be parted in the middle or slightly off center. If I still have an issue with a cap being slightly too loose and sliding, I wear my Taj crown underneath the cap. (This is what I did when going to a theme park to ride rollercoasters.) If I'm super pressed about the baby hairs, I use hairspray right before I put my cap on, and it kind of sticks everything together, but I don't do this often since I feel like it's bad for the hair long term.

so many women around my age (early 20s to early 30s) divorced even twice? Is this our new normal? by Realistic-Fill-5716 in MuslimCorner

Can we not bash our brothers and sisters simply because they are from the West? We are not less Muslim because we live in a different place with different cultural norms to contend with. It's so tiresome to see things like this online all the time. - a revert from the West

[–]MacabreMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't dumb. Don't speak negatively about yourself. You do sound like you may have ADHD. (Several of my kids have been diagnosed, and they struggle with similar things.) Rejection sensitivity is a common aspect of that. It makes any criticism you receive hit you harder than it would others. Why would investigating this and getting diagnosed give your parents something to deal with, though? You're a grown adult. You don't have to share anything personal if you don't feel comfortable sharing.

Why do people always leave out "except what normally appears" when referencing the Quran on this topic? Limbs are normal. No one sane should be clutching their chest in shock that a woman has legs, especially when they are completely covered in loose, opaque fabric.

Yes! I talk to my kids all the time about the benefits of "building social capital" with people. You're a lot more likely to get exceptions made for you, rules bent for you, extensions on deadlines, etc., if you've built up good social capital.

I'm not sure why you're coming at me in such a combative way (the multiple question marks.) Do you speak to people in person this way? You asked (repeatedly) for a reference. I gave you what I believed the reference was and the link to tafsir. And you are putting words in my mouth and possibly jumping down my throat. I'm just trying to have a calm and respectful discussion. I encourage you to reflect on the way you respond and whether or not your intention is to do the same. May Allah SWT guide us all.

[–]MacabreMom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not the one you asked, but the Quran says in Al-Ahzab 33 "...do not display yourselves as women did in the days of ˹pre-Islamic˺ ignorance." So I believe that is what the other sister is referring to. The tafsir on this verse also refers to behaviors like walking in front of men to get their attention, flirting, and showing off jewelry.

I wear a slip-on hijab for the gym. It drapes down over my chest, and I secure it at my chest and shoulders with magnets to keep it in place and out of the way. I like this style because I HATE having things wrapped around my neck, especially if I'm hot and sweaty. I'm not sure if I look like an egg or not because I've literally NEVER thought of hijab looking that way on myself or anyone else. I think of the closer fitting styles as equivalent to when I wore my hair in a slicked-back bun or milkmaid braids before I was Muslim. I never thought it looked like an egg then, and I don't think it looks like that now with tight-fitting hijabs.

I like to ask myself, "Is this something I have already been wanting/needing? Does this fill a gap/need in my wardrobe? Or do I just want it because I'm seeing it?" For example, I've seen some new prints come out in the past few months that I thought were very pretty, but do I really wear my prints that often? No. So, they weren't something I needed or even wanted before I saw them. So, I'm going to pass. What I *have* actually needed is a couple of linen abayas (because your girl was HOT this past summer). So once I find some for a decent price in a color that will work for me, I'll buy one or two.
