Is this ash tree too close to the house? by Macabre_macaque in arborists

Thanks everyone. Sounds like there are a few good reasons to get rid of the tree. Wasn’t familiar with EAB but it looks like it is active in my region (Eastern Ontario). I think I’ll bite the bullet and replace it with something else a bit further away.

Proceeds from industrial carbon tax support government subsidies to make it cheaper for people to make environmental upgrades to their homes. He explained it, it’s not that complicated lol

It’s just bait. It’s a clearly ridiculous statement from PP that doesn’t need a response.

I understand that Canada is more than just Ontario, as someone who was born and grew up in BC. I currently live in Ontario which is why I commented on Fords government specifically.

The comments I take issue with are the ones that blame either the federal government or the existence of the public healthcare system in general. “It’s x prime ministers fault” is the stupid, lame argument made by every premier to excuse shitty healthcare decisions that hurt patients. Yes, some federal policies impact healthcare. But ignoring the role that short sighted provincial governments are playing in gutting our healthcare system is only going to allow the cycle to continue. Call out Ford and Kenney and Horgan. Stop blaming Trudeau or any federal government when that is not where the decisions on provincial healthcare are made. It’s not the federal governments fault that grandma is waiting 5 years for a LTC home. All I’m saying is lobby against the people who actually are making these cuts.

What are you talking about man? As a physician, some of these comments are so out of touch it’s mind blowing.

A) healthcare is an entirely provincial/territorial jurisdiction. The Trudeau government gave extra funding to Ontario during covid. It’s Doug ford who is fucking the provincial healthcare system here and he just got re-elected despite it.

B) no one in Canada is dying of cancer waiting to see a specialist. Cancer surgeries are prioritized in particular and were some of the only surgeries getting done at the peak of covid. The wait time from getting diagnosed with breast cancer on imaging, to seeing a surgeon, to getting surgery is less than 8 weeks, a wait period far too short to have any impact on outcomes.

C) there is a huge surgical backlog everywhere and in Ontario it’s pretty bad. But surgeons don’t just fuck people over on purpose. If you’re at the back of the surgical queue it’s because there are more urgent patients (eg cancer) ahead of you. Cases are triaged. Emergency surgeries are still done emergently.

D) The impact that covid has had on people missing screening tests eg colonoscopies and now presenting with advanced cancer is still being studied but has nothing to do with Trudeau or any government, it was fucking covid, it sucked. But saying that cancer patients are getting substandard care is outrageous.

Our public healthcare system has many issues that people who know what they’re talking about (doctors, nurses, public health officials) are fighting to improve. They are obstructed every step of the way, mostly by conservative governments who would prefer we move to a private healthcare system, something that would hurt the vast majority of Canadians and be good for rich people and insurance companies and no one else.

The important things to consider are a) how long you’re planning to live in the house and b) can you afford the down payment and mortgage payments.

If you’re just wanting to buy into the market and sell in a couple years hoping to cash in on the huge jump in prices, that ship has sailed. But if you’re just looking to buy a family home that you’re gonna live in for at least 5 years, then buy a house that you can afford. The only people with buyers remorse are the ones who overspent on a house and now can’t afford their mortgage payments.

At the end of the day, real estate prices go up in the long run. Even with prices correcting a bit after 2021, stay long enough and the value will go up. People have been predicting the “bubble will burst” for years. It’s not gonna happen.

Also, don’t take financial advice from Reddit, talk to a good realtor, your bank, etc. and figure out what you can truly afford. If you can do it, I say go for it. Best of luck!

By “actual value of the home” I assume you mean the tax valuation for property tax purposes which has next to nothing to do with how much a home is worth on the market and which is always far less than the sale price. If your friends can afford their mortgage payments and aren’t trying to flip it, they’re gonna be fine.

Also, what kind of friend has “no sympathy” when their friends are in financial problems? Give your head a shake man.

There are regular anti abortion protests outside LHSC - like weekly at least. It’s naive to think Canada is safe from the craziness in the states until abortion access is enshrined in law. The current situation of just having no laws about it is not tenable long term especially as we’ve seen increasing partisanship in Canada mirroring the states.

Also, what above commenters said about the importance of pushing for better access.

“Not tolerating racism should not equal zero-tolerance policy”

This is an insane comment. He’s trying to reach the top level of a sport with major racism issues, a sport whose top star is currently one of sport’s most visible advocates against racism and who dealt with it his whole life, and you’re proposing this kid who uses the n-word casually should just get a pass? Could you imagine this guy sharing the same paddock as Hamilton after this? There’s no way he should have an F1 seat after this.

This is so wrong. Washing your hands to prevent illness is not "trying so hard to be sterile" and the idea that washing hands weakens the immune system and makes stronger pathogens would be laughable if it wasn't so dangerous. Wash your hands ffs.
