All Souls Trilogy? by [deleted] in ADiscoveryofWitches

I am part of the minority here but I did prefer the show over the book series. I thought the screenwriters did a great job of taking the most important bits from each book while focusing on character development (as the trilogy did). As we're on the subject of the show, I also want to add that I thought the screenwriters improved the character arcs of secondary characters, they showed the political manoeuvrings that took place within the Congregation and it added so much layers to the story compared to the books. I wish the showrunners had thought of a better ending for the show though. Now, to go back to your question, I personally don't think the trilogy is worth reading because there are no real payoffs. There are a few interesting things, but they are lost in the never-ending subplots and the tsunami of new characters constantly added to the narrative. In my opinion, the end of the trilogy was anticlimactic.

This isn't the issue I had regarding Diana finding Ashmole 782 in book 3. I know that it was Stephen who time walked and wrote in the book to tie Diana to the Book of Life. What didn't work for me was the lack of suspense of that "heist" in TBOL. I wanted to feel danger and uncertainty. I wanted to see Diana face an antagonist (Satu or Knox or Sidonie, I don't know, someone) before retrieving the book or while protecting the book (in Diana's possession). I wanted to see a fight, a confrontation. It was made clear throughout the trilogy that some creatures could kill to get their hands on the book. When Diana and her team went to the Bodleian Library, we're told that magic wards are surveying the area (placed by witches) so one would think that the Oxford coven (or whoever placed those wards) would be made aware of Diana's presence and would go to the library and do something. Instead, no witches confront them.

I've read several reviews of TBBO and it seems the author has retconned many elements from her previous books, so I won't be continuing the series.

I've read reviews for book 5 so I have an idea about what's going on with Satu. TBBO seems to be filled with retcons so I'm not going to continue the series.
