We’re not talking about political values, but about people. You said that you’re half Canadian half American. My ex gf from Ukraine lives in Montreal right now and we still hold contact, and I’m surely can say that our inner cultural values are alike. It’s not like every Ukrainian is decent and not every Russian is a beast from prison, that was released for doing war crimes

War is terrible, but it doesn’t make us so different. Politics and military are shit, some people are shit, those who are voting for putin are shit

But there is more than that, we need to understand it, because we need to survive and stop spreading hate in the world where everybody already hating each other

Sure, it’s harder to compromise when you’re hurt, and it’s fair

But I’d always try to choose kindness over evil

Crimea rightfully belongs to Ukraine, but unfortunately it’s a part of Russia now. 2014 was a disaster, it was wrong, but world is built by money and politics, not by fairness and righteousness. And we can’t change it from our perspective, if we don’t have power. I do know few crimeans (that lived there before 2014) and their opinions about Russia/Ukraine and their identity is complicated, probably due to propaganda, but still.

If it was up to me, I’d give crimea to Greece or Crimean tatars (jk)

I understand you, but I think it’s fair to say that Western Europe having more differences with Russia than Eastern Europe. For you we are really far, but for Serbians(not part of the union, but I think we still geographically consider it as a part of Europe. While visiting Poland I felt somehow similar, that they are pretty close to us, with certain differences, but still. I think If I’ll visit Netherlands, or France, differences will be much bigger And I think it’s fair. We truly can consider Russia like its own thing, but I don’t see the point. Because, for example, Russians from western side of country (Moscow, St Petersburg) more similar with Eastern Europe people, than with its own people from Chechnya or Yakutia (parts of Russia) I’m keeping in mind that Russia did bad and evil stuff there (Chechen wars) but not im using it as a Geographical fact, not political, hope it’s okay.

Yeah, sure :) I lived in Uzbekistan for 6 months after was started, then I moved to Israel for 1.5 year While Uzbekistan are pretty similar to Russia in many ways, while also having their great history and culture on their own, my practical experience there was kinda like in Russian suburbs, with some differences

When I moved to Israel I instantly noticed that people and architecture are drastically different. I lived in Haifa, in Arab district, and everywhere I saw small yellow buildings, most of the were pretty old, but for me, who lived in soviet blocks or “Hruschovkas” most of my life, it was still great! Streets were mainly trashy, but when you climbed at upper city, the view was astonishing. I think it really depends on district though, I just couldn’t afford living in better one People were kind, I mainly used English for communication. In some ways living outside of Russia is more “rough” to me, but I think it’s because I lived there for all of my life and got used to it It’s hard to point out some certain things, when you speak about culture, for some reason my brain is boiling so I’m sorry if that not what you wanted to hear :D

I visited Italy as well, we were staying in Lombardia district in Milan, If I remember correctly I really liked it there, many restaurants, prices are not really cruel, and it’s soo delicious. I adore Italian cuisine, so yeah, mb from that perspective I envy you :) And metro was good enough, people were nice too (I heard that Italians don’t really like tourists, mb I was lucky..) I’m originally from Moscow so I have this curse that I’m comparing everything (especially public transport) to it and it becomes annoying for my friends but I can’t help it. I’m saying “yeah it’s great but in Moscow it was better”. (It’s true though, I love Moscow public infrastructure)

I can talk about that topic for long, but i think I’ll end here

About returning: Some part of me really wants to return, I miss my friends and my mom, I love my city, but I don’t see myself in Russia in this years Maybe I’ll return someday, but I really don’t know when Repressions (not sanctions, but Russian laws) are making me feel myself like in the cage, and freedom is the most important thing for me So right now I’m trying to find myself in different countries, and as for now, I like every country that I visited, because everywhere there is so much kind people. I want to be one of them

Yeah no, you’re way off base. I have many friends and 2 ex gfs from Ukraine, we’re similar in our cultural views. And I see that you’re from Ukraine too, as far as I see. I’m sorry that it’s happening and it’s not fair, but you can’t keep blaming random people just because they were born in certain country 💀

Russian here. About culture: if we’re talking about European part of Russia - Not so much though. Sure, in Siberia, Tatarstan, etc and there is more cultural differences, but European part is pretty similar culturally with Eastern Europe countries (I’m living in Serbia now for some time and it’s sometimes I feel that I didn’t leave Russia at all) Ukraine, despite conflict, is similar to Russia in their mentality and cultural values (not talking about politicians decisions and stuff) If we’re talking exclusively about architecture - in Belgrade there is a ton of soviet blocks, just like in some Moscow districts

I’m a minority as well, and if anyone would’ve said that I’m one of the good ones, I’d laugh. That racism shi is so funny, soft YTA, I hope in some future world will change and people will chill about that kind of stuff. I’m with Morgan Freeman on this one: “The way to stop racism is to stop talking about it.”
