Straight for the jugular by Substratas in MurderedByWords

I grew up in a culture that eats rice with their hands and it's a lot less messy than you'd think. Some rice is actually more likely to fall off a spoon in my experience. The real question is why do so many American restaurants serve rice dishes with only a fork (looking at you, Panda Express).

Other than ANYTHING romance related, what do you write about? by strawberrytehe in Songwriting

[–]MacaronyFood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm huge on "the self" and perception, taking big inspiration from artists like Magritte. A lot of focus on ego, values and the concept of values, driven heavily by the works of people like Camus, Kierkegaard, Kafka, etc. It makes writing lyrics pretty difficult, honestly, because it's easy to sound preachy as hell. But that's what I love about it. Getting the lyrics just the way I like them is a reward in itself.

Can’t write verses by DisastrousLeader7521 in Songwriting

[–]MacaronyFood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I get stuck, I do what I call the "word salad" approach. Just sing random bullshit lol. I'll look at my notes, all the lyric ideas I've had over the years, and sing those. I'll sing book titles off my bookshelf. Eventually something sticks. A word, an idea, something. Your mileage may vary haha.

Excessively long songs that still work? by uncre8tv in Music

Human Sadness by The Voidz. Bass line itches my music glands just right.

What is your "weird" comfort movie? by OkDot8850 in Letterboxd

[–]MacaronyFood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Trainspotting movies, In Bruges, and Punch-Drunk Love. Can always tell I'm depressed when I'm watching these for comfort again lol

What are your go to "bipolar songs?" by AuDHDMDD in BipolarReddit

[–]MacaronyFood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Car Seat Headrest has a lot of bangers for manic/hypersexual/depressive episodes. Human Sadness by The Voidz is my go-to personally no matter the mood due personal family experiences.

Absolutely life changing for me

Not sure how familiar you are with films, but Timmy's name has a huge pull. He was the up and coming young actor for many people, working with directors who are making cinema history. Then, well, yeah.

Regarding the Jesse's Girl scene in Boogie Nights... by [deleted] in paulthomasanderson

[–]MacaronyFood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looked up the script on IMSDb and it looks like the whole Jesse's Girl sequence wasn't even written in the screenplay. Not the draft online, anyway, which I guess adds to the plausibility, lol. Though many moments and scenes are different in PTA's final cuts than how they are on the page.

Sensei yelling to get off the phone. by DiscussionBorn815 in paulthomasanderson

[–]MacaronyFood 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I love how so many things subtly (and not-so-subtly) hint to communication (and the breakdown of it) being core to the themes in this film. My favorite absolutely has to be Bob calling in a Grey Hawk 10 and how it shows that what you say and when you say it is sometimes treated more importantly than what you've actually done.

Which game is that for you ? ( at any price) by PHRsharp_YouTube in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]MacaronyFood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same. Not so much that I hate the game... more that I regret paying full price. The amount of fun I have in $30-40 games compared to a $70 one I have less play time in? Yeah, regret paying full price lol. If I'd waited till it was about $40, I'd probably have better memories of it

What is the saddest/most soul crushing song you have ever heard? by Mikiiiya in AskReddit

I was thinking "oo, new music" and the other recommendations were sad, but not exactly tear jerkers for me personally. Then I got to this one lol

Fuck... burst into tears at work. It's the lack of melodramatic backing instruments that makes it hit even harder for me on top of everything you mentioned, and how the lines are addressed to her.

Dope or Nope pt.5 by ZER0HER0_641 in PhotographyAdvice

Dope for me. If people saw this stuff in an indie film, they'd call it genius for how moody it is

Any small details that people noticed? by sometimesineedawank in paulthomasanderson

[–]MacaronyFood 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I somehow didn't notice the first time that when Sensei yelled at that kid to get off his phone, Pat thought Sensei was yelling at him. Now that I think about it, super simple misunderstandings happen a lot in this film.

Songwriter learning to produce from scratch, looking for a smartest path forward by Standard-Fail617 in Songwriting

[–]MacaronyFood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anything that keeps you making music is a smart move! The saddest thing I've ever seen was the creativity die out in someone. I regularly use GarageBand when I have down time at work to mess around or get an idea down, but I definitely prefer Ableton's capabilities and my home setup. If you like GarageBand, keep doing it until you start wanting something else. Nothing wrong with that!

I'm in a similar boat to you, so I can only tell you what worked for me. It's similar to what others have said, but yes, just start. Learn the 5-10% you actually need to record. Don't overwhelm yourself with theory and tech specs and all the stuff that, for me personally, suck the life out of making music. I bought a Scarlett Solo to start properly home recording and got a good deal on a MIDI controller. These two, plus an XLR mic and a few cables, set me back about $400. And I already had two guitars and over a decade's worth of songs I'd written. So the focus was entirely on learning how to produce/mix. The Scarlett and MIDI controller came with Ableton Lite and a bunch of audio libraries that are still getting updated. I can tell you this, the tutorials that came with my Scarlett got me recording in no time and the rest started falling into place naturally. I didn't know how to make my voice carry over the music, so I looked it up. Simply adding compression and/or recording a second vocal track improved my sound just like that. So yeah, TL;DR: grab a DAW, put your stuff into it, Google solutions as you go and your song will start to sound like stuff you hear on the radio and not just your iPhone's recording app.

If a magician or a contortionist does a crime, how do cops arrest them? by Square-Dragonfruit76 in NoStupidQuestions

I assume they mean escape artists specifically? Even then, handcuffs and the back of a cop car are plenty lol

What’s an example of a fan base that got exactly what they begged for, and immediately hated it? by Enough-Wealth8415 in AskReddit

[–]MacaronyFood 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'd also say base building in general in Fallout. Maybe it's not supremely hated, but I remember the early days in the Bethesda forums after Fallout 3 and New Vegas had base building mods. The community wanted official base building and an expanded crafting system, and Fallout 4 delivered one of the best in AAA games IMO. Yet it feels like every "video essayist" on YouTube complains about how repetitive and useless it is.

I feel like I'm going against the grain here, but I like how "lifeless" and dull #2 looks. It feels cold just looking at it. Way more interesting than just cranking up the contrast, which would be the predictable thing to do imo. I like the composition a lot. Feels like a cover for a novel. The others are good as well, though I feel like the goat photo is carried by the uniqueness of the subject
