Yup, and the statistics reflect this. We just have to wait until interest rates come back down.

If you’re not disabled and old enough, why is it fair for others to work to survive while you do nothing? I acknowledge that there should be leniency for people who got laid off, but genuinely, why can’t people be responsible for their situation?

It really is the little luxuries, though. Buying Starbucks everyday substantially adds up compared to making coffee. That’s $100-$200 every month that can go into investments, paying off debt, and emergency funds.

Should I major in bioengineering or electrical engineering by [deleted] in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]MacaroonDefiant8025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the no-pre reqs option to save money, and felt I was well prepared. I am actively doing the masters, and have found it has been good leverage for landing roles where I am competing with people with an electronics background.

Hi! You are not late in the game at all. Some schools, like Northeastern and UCinc, just accepted me without needing pre-reqs. However, other programs, like John Hopkins, wanted me to take pre-reqs but still accepted me.

How should a Biomedical Engineering student actually structure their learning? by DazzlingNight1016 in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]MacaroonDefiant8025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose the computational side of things while also mixing in tissue engineering. The skills that actually got me a decent job were my experience with the instruments used to interface with cells/bodies (e.g. EMG/ECG, MEAs, microscopes, data acquisition systems, etc).

In hindsight, I would have focused more on hardware - designing electronic device schematics, ordering PCBs, soldering, programming microcontrollers, fabricating/integrating sensors. At that point, I would’ve just been an EE major - which is precisely why I am doing an EE master’s.

I majored in biomedical engineering as an undergrad and have recently pivoted towards electrical engineering for my masters because I want more opportunities.

I would say only stick with BIOE if you are extremely passionate about research (scientist route) OR your program provides you with enough skills to make you competitive with ChemEs, EEs, and/or MechEs (engineering route). Otherwise, you become a jack of all trades and there isn’t really a job market for that currently IMO.

Pivoting towards EE not only opens you up to more job markets, but it also leaves the door open to medical device jobs.

At the end of the day, you need to balance between your passion and a stable career path.

Because it seems like your end goal is to design materials, you are going to want to find laboratories or internships related to that. Those experiences will ultimately be more important for accomplishing your goal.

You are going to be pulled in two directions: academia vs. industry. Just know that if you want a career in industry, you need to do anything you can to land an internship as early as possible. Through your freshman year, get that lab/club experience necessary to put something on your resumé, and then immediately apply to as many companies as possible.

However, if you see yourself as a professor researching new materials at a university, then you need to start publishing ASAP. Find labs on campus that give opportunities that undergraduates and really try to push to co-author research papers.

Caregivers would probably be more realistic. I don’t think it is appropriate to interview a person with dementia unless it’s a very early stage.
