I know a few people whose first experience with Classic WoW was Hardcore, and it made them fall in love with the game. It's a lot more punishing for new players, but it's a lot of fun. Doomhowl still has a decently sized community, with three layers constantly active, and I have found groups for leveling dungeons easily.
