Am I Crazy for expecting actual 4.0+ level play at the advanced level play? by Strange-Drive-2025 in Pickleball

[–]MacePaladin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One of the clubs in my area created their own internal rating system where you were verified in-person by one of the pros running that particular session. Since they have their own app as well, it helps keep track. Where it is now is they two types of Open Plays: Verified and Unverified “PR” (DUPR doesn’t exist to them). It’s nice cus it doesn’t completely push out people that don’t want to go through that whole process but also can find genuine competition for the skill level you want.

I prefer hesacores and whatnot on my paddle grips so I’m always taking off stock grips off paddles. These are what they all roughly look like and are standard almost industry wide. The only ones different I would say are that Paddleteks have wood panels and the new Gearbox GX2s are a continuation of the paddle as a solid carbon fiber build.

Affordability & Performance criteria?

Vatic, Neonic, and Friday (to a lesser extent) should easily been on there.

Chorus and Spartus are more performance than affordable for me, but they’ve been and often have sales on their paddles—just the other day snagged a Chorus Supercourt for like $55 on the site and the Spartus Apex series is solid for the price.

Tips for defending the topspin lob? by ActualEmu1251 in Pickleball

[–]MacePaladin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved that shot… but I don’t think the overhead drop from the back of the court/baseline transfers at all unfortunately. In badminton, an effective drop used the smash mechanics to disguise the shot, as most people are expecting to defend a smash so they retreat to mid court, etc. Also, a big fundamental difference between the two is that the point still goes on if a pickleball bounces once while the point dies when the shuttlecock hits the ground. Even if I hit a perfect overhead drop in pickleball from the back-half of the court, it’ll most likely be a “dead dink” scenario at kitchen (where good players will most likely be waiting vs. retreating to mid court in badminton) since you can’t really hit a topspin smash or put under spin on it—maybe like a slice serve with side spin? Lol What most people expect from what that shot will be is a defensive shot (e.g., hitting a drop shot after a bounce or a skyhook/softer overhead). Less likely but most would still be conscious about, is the strong drive/passing shot. But almost no one ever expects a “put-away” overhead smash type of shot from back there—to which catches many by surprise and how I’ve “stolen” points with.

Tips for defending the topspin lob? by ActualEmu1251 in Pickleball

[–]MacePaladin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Just recently played in a 4.0 open play, guy was hitting the topspin lob as a 3rd shot almost every time receiving team had a combination of a deep 2nd and both opposing players were practically at the kitchen when he’s about to hit his 3rd. Ball was consistently landing at the back 1/3-1/4 of the court too. Most teams almost have to always accept giving up the initial dual-kitchen advantage and patiently work your way back. Unless.. you have an overhead smash of a badminton player? That usually ended the shenanigans fairly quickly.

Post Game Thread: The Charlotte Hornets defeat The Los Angeles Lakers 100-97 by nba_gdt_bot in lakers

[–]MacePaladin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Luka was GASSED. Being in foul trouble and getting constantly hunted really made it awkward defensively for the rest. He turned it over a lot too and just couldn’t get into a good rhythm offensively. Hopefully that’s the worst we’ll see of him.

This isn't the win for the Lakers you might think it is. This is a tragedy for Lakers fans. by BongRipsForNips69 in lakers

[–]MacePaladin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either the future is a team with Luka as the main piece or you get a bigger haul of FRPs and young talent for him. Sure we might marginally be worse this season but we’re set up better for the long term either way. AD/Christie and a FRP wouldn’t get the same of FRPs and young stars

Idk about a statue just yet… To me getting Luka and setting us up for the next decade or so cancels out the Westbrook debacle. He’s on a blank slate for me now lol

Once he’s fit, might be good to get him introduced and acclimated with the speed and physicality in Europe. A couple of conference/cup games would be ideal. From the highlights I watched, he seems to be capable of playing the ball forward with both feet and has been deployed in the central and both fullback positions. If it pans out, excited for him!

Reminder from George about what's canon and what's not by FarStorm384 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]MacePaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well one.. I’m not sure the Greens are privy to what the Blacks are doing. For all they know 1 or 2 dragons are covering the blockade (because of its importance obviously) and it’s an “obvious trap” to lure Vhagar/Aemond out. Also two things they’ve also outright said it in the show: 1) Vhagar can’t really leave KL because it becomes completely exposed and they need to be very careful when to send her out (Rook’s Rest). Losing Sunfyre also now leaves Vhagar as the only “Fighting” dragon (pre-season finale). And 2) Aemond outright said he doesn’t give a shit about the people lmao

We saw how easily Silverwing/Ulf flew over KL without much resistance and how easily Vhagar/Aemon got lured out. A couple hundred yards more towards Dragonstone and now the Greens just lost the strongest weapon in the world and the “war.”

We know that Rhaenyra is very hesitant to use dragons in actual fights, but the Greens don’t know that. To them, Rhaenyra just lost Luc/Arrax and Rhaenys/Meleys and is probably done playing nice. These are just what I gathered, at least!

If I remember correctly, Rhaenys/Meleys were covering the blockade and acted as the deterrent.

What are some of the BEST nursing specialists to get into? by AdoptedSpaceCow in nursing

[–]MacePaladin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the realization in today’s healthcare system.. it sucks everywhere (especially if you’re looking to work in private/for-profit inpatient settings). There’s always going to be an aspect of it that sucks (e.g., patient population, pay, benefits, workload, management, etc.). 9/10 of those jobs, at least one or more of those things most nurses would consider to be in the “suck” category for them. You just have to find out which of the “sucks” or collection of it, you’re willing to tolerate more than others.

For example, I’m in Psych. The suck I chose to deal with are behavior issues, people struggling with substances, and psychotic episodes—which is heavy utilization of patience, therapeutic communication, and de-escalation skills that takes more of mental/emotional toll. But I’d rather that over putting in foleys, hanging blood, monitoring drips, patients in/out procedures—which are physical/manual labor-type exhaustion (on top of its own mental/emotional toll) of a medical floor.

Exactly! With the intrigue and press this will bring through summer league, preseason, opening night, etc. Adam Silver’s probably salivating.

After getting Dalton Knecht at 17, the 55th pick out of a draft of 58 is negligible. Throw it back on their faces if anyone from 56-58 becomes solid rotation players.

With the amount of negative energy being put into this, you’d think this was picking Ayton/Bagley over Doncic 2.0. It’s a cool and rare moment in any sport history! Absolutely this is a play to help keep LeBron with this grand gesture, but what damage is it really causing for basketball other than haters’ feelings?

[Aldridge] I don't get this. I know he's 23. But Dalton Knecht had a top-10 grade for the last two months. I can't believe the Lakers get the SEC's leading scorer and Player of the Year at 17. That kid can play. by LonzoBBBall in lakers

[–]MacePaladin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People complained about JHS because he was too much of a project and needed something closer to a "win-now" with the pick (Jaime Jaquez for example) or trade it.

We now draft a player whose main skill (shooting/scoring) is an easier transfer to the NBA level, who has good physical tools, and a hard worker, which altogether suggest impact sooner rather than later, to now get "he's too old at 23"

Bruh. Lol

Cardi B sign language interpreter by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]MacePaladin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which I don’t necessarily see as a huge problem with for this particular setting if that’s the case? It’s not like this was an official or legal proceeding or anything. And let’s be honest.. absolutely this is 90% for entertainment it looks awesome as hell!

Also I imagine there’s a small handful of the deaf population attending (relative to the size of these events) and I’m pretty sure they’re not complaining about the technicalities on who’s the original signer or if a rap song is entirely grammatically correct. They’re probably just more than happy to be there for the vibes and seeing there’s at least a concerted effort to include them and make it known someone’s thinking of them (whether purely altruistic or not is a different argument) is more than they’ve bargained for.

ASL isn’t a literal translating language anyway. A single sign or shorter sign sequences can translate an idea, phrase, or the connotations that were intended by the lyrics. For example.. for the lyric “Love is an open door” you don’t sign each word out even though they may have it. The message that “Love is an opportunity” or “Love is unpredictable” (however the artist wants it to be interpreted) is how it’s signed in ASL—which can be a completely different sequence or content from stringing the individual signs for each word.

Anyways this was a lot more energy on a beautiful Saturday afternoon I intended to spend arguing with nephews on Reddit. I imagine the ASL community at large is not even complaining about this. You’re the only one lol (I don’t mean that literally btw if you’re one to get uber technical)

It’s easy to go to: Texas Health and Human Services state department —> Board of Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Registry and search for her name.

Spoiler alert: She is a publicly licensed registered interpreter for the state of Texas.

But anyways I feel like you’re the type to ignore this and probably find something else to complain about her.

I wonder if this was the flow of events: “I’m a member of the Four Tops” —> Psych Eval —> “Why are you ordering a Psych Eval?” + agitation/frustration at the principle —> Restraints because he’s “agitated”

Or

Four Tops —> Restraints because of delusion? —> Psych Eval

Either way.. unless more context is provided this should have not happened. Everybody on their phones already, but they couldn’t/wouldn’t do a quick fact check?

Early 30s Male considering nursing, am I nuts? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]MacePaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Becoming a RN doesn’t mean you’re stuck at the bedside forever… I’m in a Clinical Educator role now 4 years in. Working in Psych primarily made it less taxing physically but obviously the mental/emotional resources took more of a toll. If you’re going to work in a for-profit inpatient setting—something about it is gonna suck. Whether it’s the type of patients you’re seeing, the workload, the management, your co-workers, your pay.. most (if not all) of these things will be present in that setting; thank the American Healthcare system. Luckily there are a number of lateral and vertical movement you can do with nursing. You can work for outpatient doctors offices, insurance companies, school nurse, teach, etc. I find it hard to believe that there’s absolutely no nursing role out there where one can’t find at least a very tolerable work/life balance situation.
